Part 35
Surya Sharma sat in front of Doctor Mehta in the hospital. His hands were rubbing against each other in nervousness. Dr. Mehta had suddenly called him to discuss Kripa's case. " I hope you know why youre here Mr. Sharma." Surya nodded. " To discuss about Kripa I believe." The doctor smiled a little and then put his glasses on.
" Here are the CT scans of Kripa's brain." He handed it to Surya and then continued. " As you can see, the piece of glass I was talking about is right here." He pointed out to the section of her brain. Surya looked at it with a miserable expression. A piece of glass in his daughter's brain. That was just too disturbing. " How is it going to affect her doctor?"
" Well, for now all she has is partial amnesia. She only remembers upto her senior prom, which happened to be a year ago. She doesnt remember getting engaged to Mr. Khanna. She doesnt remember college. She doesnt remember anything that happened in the past year or so." Surya shifted his body in his seat and then glanced that the CT scans again.
" Doctor, is there a chance that she can slip into coma because of that piece of glass?" Dr. Mehta sighed. " Thats the only thing we are scared of. I know it must hurt to see your daughter not remember one whole year of her life. All those memories and...but another operation might mean something much bigger. Possible death." Surya took a deep breath again and closed his eyes for a moment and then looked at the doctor.
" Will she live if that piece of glass is.." He took a deep breath. It wasnt easy for him afterall. " if the glass is still in there?"
" As I said Mr. Sharma. She will live but in what condition, we cant say. The piece is right here." He pointed again. " This is the section of the brain that regulates emotions. If that is destroyed because of an operation, she might not be able to emote the way she used to. Her feelings about things can change, her view on people can change, her way of living can change and....her personality may be altogether altered. Mr. Sharma there is chance that she might not be the same person again...ever!"
Surya quietly entered the door to kripa's room, still thinking about what the doctor had said. It was in his hands now, to make the decision. To go with the operation and remove the glass. Or to let that piece of glass be in there and hope that it wouldnt affect her in life, the chances of which were slim.
He looked at Kripa, her eyes still closed. Perhaps she was sleeping. Surya smiled as he looked at his innocent daughter's face. She had woken up when her parents had gone to arrange for the huge hospital expense. He sat next to her on her bed.
Kripa felt a hand touch her face. Without opening her eyes, she grabbed the hand and smiled. "Angad..." When she felt the hand immediately leave her face, she opened her eyes, in shock. She saw a sad man sitting in front of her. All across his face, she saw the most miserable look. Like he had lost someone. She took his hands in hers. " aap?"
He looked at her in shock. Did she not remember him either? Before he could say anything, he heard her speak. " Papa..." He smiled when he heard those words. " Aap mere papa hain na?" He frowned at her question but still tried to smile. Atleast she remembered him. " Ha. Mein hi tumhara papa hu. Tumhara bohut bura papa..." She nodded her head with a No.
" No Dad. Aap bure nahi ho. aap bure nahi ho..." She cried as she held his hand to her face. He smiled once more. He heard a familiarity in her voice. She did remember him after all. But one part of him thought that it was better if she hadnt. Maybe it would have made her forget what a bad father he was and probably this would be his second chance in life. But he pushed away his selfish thoughts. " I love you beta."
He pulled her hand towards his chest and hugged it. She felt his tears on her hand and then moved it to his cheek and wiped them. " Papa mujhe yaha se lekar chaliye. I dont want to be here. please dad" He looked at her now. She was so miserable here. In the midst of strangers. He didnt want her to suffer. "I will Kripa. I will get you out of here." She smiled and then rested against his body and closed her eyes again. I'll have to do something Kripa. I cant see my child cry anymore. I have done enough to ruin your childhood. I wont ruin your life.
Surya sat in the doctors office again. He had rushed there to meet him right after he had seen Kripa. " Yes Mr. Sharma?"
" Dr. Mehta I have made the decision." The doctor smiled and nodded. " I have decided that we won't go through with the operation."
" and may I ask why not?" The doctor didnt seem like it mattered. Any choice would have proved to be the wrong one.
" Yes Doctor. If she goes through another operation, it will mean that she has to stay here, in the hospital, for god knows how long. I dont want her to suffer anymore. She doesnt want to be here for even a single minute. So, I wont let her." The doctor nodded. " But Mr. Sharma, you know she has to be here for atleast another 2 weeks and..."
" NO! doctor please. She doesnt want to stay here and I want her to be happy. we can keep a nurse with us at home that can take care of her. but i want you to prepare her discharge papers." The doctor laughed to himself. " Mr. Sharma please. try and understand! its for your daughter. If she leaves now, she might not survive. so lets compromise. Another week and I discharge her. ok?"
Surya thought about it for a minute and then looked at the doctor. " Done. I let her stay here for another week and then you discharge her. its a deal" He shook hands with the doctor and walked out. The doctor smiled to himself and then looked at the nurse. " This man is something. He thinks he can use his business skills for everything. But I cant let her leave before she's atleast starting to recover. If she goes now, she'll be dead in two days. I just hope nothing happens. " The nurse sighed sympathetically and then the doctor left.
Surya walked into Kripa's room again and saw Angad sitting next to her. He was looking at Kripa as she slept carelessly. Seeing Surya, Angad quickly got up. " Hi Uncle." Surya didnt return Angad's smile. "Angad what are you doing here?"
" I was just here to see Kripa." Surya grabbed Angad's arm and walked him outside her room. " Angad listen to me. I dont want you to be anywhere near Kripa. do you get it? NOWHERE. and thats final"
" But she's my fiance and..." Surya held a hand in front of his face. " I know that. and I think that it has caused a lot of problems already. Angad if you werent in her life today, she wouldnt be here. so please, i request you to just stay away from her life. please." Surya left Angad standing there all alone. His words had pierced his heart too deep. Angad if you werent in her life today, she wouldnt be here. He fell back on the same bench again.
The nurse came out yelling on top of her lungs. " Doctor!! doctor please hurry. She's getting those fits again." Surya's attention diverted to where the nurse was standing. Angad got up too and rushed to the door but seeing Surya look at him in anger, he stopped in his way and looked away. But he peeked inside the room and saw Kripa's body jerk up and down again.
" We need to carry on with the operation Mr. Sharma." Surya looked at the frantic doctor. " We cant let the glass stay in her brain. Its too dangerous." Surya nodded. " If its going to save her life then do whatever you can." His voice was calm now. More like he didnt have the energy to argue. He closed his eyes and sat down on the bench.
" Surya meri beti..." Gayatri hugged him as he told her what the doctors were planning to do. She had left to go home and bring Kripa some food and when she had got back, her world was turned upside down one more time. "Gayatri apne aap ko sambhalo. Kripa ko kuch nahi hoga..kuch bhi nahi. ok?" She didnt say anything but looked at Angad as she still held onto her husband. He felt her eyes accuse him again. Angad closed his eyes and rested it back on the wall.
The light of the operation theatre turned off once again and the Dr. Mehta walked out with a nurse. Angad quickly got up as Surya rushed to the doctor. "Dr...Kripa?" The doctor placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled. " Dont worry Mr. Khanna the operation was successful. We managed to take the piece of glass out." He saw Surya's eyes smile again. In an instant he hugged Gayatri. " Dekha gayatri. kripa ab bilkul theek hain!"
" Lekin..." Surya froze and looked at the doctor as he said that word. The word that always changed things. " Lekin kya doctor?"
" Mr. Sharma. I just hope that it didnt damage that part of her brain. because we cannot predict what changes it will cause." Surya nodded. He knew that this operation meant that some things had to change. He looked at gayatri with an assuring look. Angad just looked on, feeling like an outsider.
It had been 12 hours already and Kripa was still not awake. Surya and Gayatri waited right in front of the ICU, while Angad stood in front of God's idol. He stared at it for a few minutes. Why are you doing this to her God? She never harmed anyone. Then why her? Why my Kripa...kyon?
Surya stood up as the nurse walked out. " She's gained conciousness Sir. " Surya smiled and grabbed Gayatri's hand and walked inside. Kripa lay on her bed, still more peaceful than before. He looked at her and smiled. His daughter looked almost divine as she lay there in a white hospital gown. Gayatri sat on the chair right next to kripa and looked at her and then at Surya and smiled. " I wish we were better parents Surya." He nodded, gesturing her to stay quiet right now.
Hearing her voice, Kripa's eyes opened again. She looked at them, this time with no expression at all. "Mera bacha." Gayatri ran her hand over Kripa's head but Kripa moved back a little. " Aap...kaun hain aap?" She looked at Gayatri and Surya as they were perfect strangers standing in front of her. " Kripa yeh tum kya keh rahi ho? mein tumhari mom aur..." She moved back again as she saw this woman's hand approach her again.
" Mein aapko nahi jaanti. please aap dono yaha se chale jaye." She looked away frantically. Surya placed a hand on Gayatri's shoulder and asked her to say nothing. He looked at Kripa. " Kripa mein jaanta hu ke tum humse naraaz ho. hum dono bohut bure hain na? we were always really bad parents. we were never there for you..not when you needed us the most atleast. But we want to change that Kripa. we want you to be happy again. I just..." She pushed his hand off her face when he tried to touch her. " Please leave. mujhe akela chod do."
"Kripa yeh tum kais baatein kar rahi ho?" He tried to hug her again but she pushed him harder and then clutched her head in pain. " Aap jaaye yaha se. please...." She looked around and then yelled again. " Angad!!! angad kaha ho tum??? please mujhe bachao!!" Gayatri got up in shock. How come she remembered Angad when she didnt remember her own parents? The thought scared her. She just ran out of the room as Surya watched his wife run away. He looked at Kripa. She was scared to death by these strangers. She didnt remember them. All she remembered was that one special person in her life, Angad.
Angad heard Kripa call his name. He immediately got up from the little temple in the hospital. He started to run towards Kripa's room, even if it was killing his already injured leg. When he got to the ICU door, he suddenly saw Gayatri run out of there and then Surya closely following her.
Surya saw Angad there and pushed him gently to the side. There was a worry on his face. "Angad I need to talk to you." Angad looked at the man that had just asked him to leave his daughter alone. His voice sounded so much friendlier than before, Angad thought. He nodded his head and asked Surya to continue.
"Kripa has lost her memory Angad." He looked up at Kripa's father in shock. " But I just heard her calling my name. so how can..."
" All she remembers is you Angad. not even her own parents." Angad smiled a little at the thought that she remembered him but then tried to stop his excitement so that he wouldnt hurt Surya. " What did you want to talk about uncle?"
" Angad I need your help."
" With what?"
" I need you to make Kripa remember everything that has happened in her life. Her parents, her house, her childhood, her college." Angad looked down now. He obviously seemed upset. " Why me? I thought you wanted me to stay away from her."
" Angad youre the only person she remembers right now. only you can her us..and her!" Angad looked at Surya now. He wanted her to get her memory back. Not for her parents but for him, for their love. " I'll do it! I just want her to be happy" Surya nodded happily and hugged Angad suddenly. Angad tumhe kya pata ki mein yeh sirf apni beti ko paane ke liye kar raha hu. jis din usse sab kuch yaad aa jayega mujhe bohut afsos ke saath tumhe..good-bye kehna padega. sirf uss din tak angad. mujhe uska intezaar hain.
