I have a feeling that Manu was equally in love with Niki but realised that she was too young ... he wanted to give her time to grow up ... be more focused towards her education and know her mind well ... he seems like a very grounded character ...
" He would look at me and shake his head, but still wouldn't stop pushing me to study harder. Initially, I had told him that it was distracting to study when he was sitting with me. And he had told me that there was a difference between infatuation and love. Infatuation was when you lost yourself in each other. Love was when you found yourself in each other. I had tried to absorb that thought. I often did feel lost in him. While I had pondered that, he had said that I made him want to strive harder and that he wanted to do the same for me. We had studied together until I no longer felt distracted, until I could sit with him for hours and focus on my studies, drawing comfort from the fact that he was not someone who couldn't handle not having my constant attention. I hadn't known you could be still in love. That you didn't need words or actions to keep it alive as I had always thought... It had just seemed to flourish on its own, something beyond anything I could actively do to keep it going."
And maybe he knew all along that the girl his family was showing him was Niki only ... but hadn't realised that by just going off and not keeping in touch with her had a worse impact on her ... she was not just going to accept him so easily ... as she felt that he had rejected her ...
