It was almost after 5-6 years, when armaan and samrat would meet at this very place, which was about one kilometer away from their college. During old days, both used to meet there to have a bike race. It had become their hobby during those days, as they bunked classes together to have bike race.
Armaan was already waiting for samrat at that place, and he smile to himself, recalling an incident, when, while having bike race, armaan drove towards college without informing samrat, just for fun!
"Armaan…"
He heard someone calling from behind. Expecting there to be samrat, he turned back and saw him, who stood there with his signature smile.
"Kaise ho tum? Aur tumhara trip kaisa raha?" samrat asked casually.
"Well, main toh theek hun, aur trip bhi achha tha!" armaan replied, being formal.
Both did not speak anything for a while. A kind of awkwardness was there between the two; neither did armaan know what to say, nor did samrat know. But he knew that armaan was guilt-ridden, as gunjan had told him last night, so he tried to reduce the awkwardness by talking about their college days.
"Tumhe abhi tak yaad hai ki hum bike race ke liye yahan milte the?" samrat smiled, "mujhe laga ki tum bhool chuke hoge!"
"Kuchh cheezein hum nahi bhoolte hain samrat!" armaan replied. "Aur khaas karke wo jo hamare dil ke bahut kareeb ho…"
"Toh tum thodi der pehle kya soch rahe the?"
"wo din yaad kar raha tha, jab bike race karte karte main tumhe bina inform kiye college ki taraf chala gaya tha!" armaan chuckled slowly. "Tujhe yaad hai wo din?"
"Haan!" replied samrat with a slight frown, "main tujhe do ghante tak yahan wahan dhoondte reh gaya…. Wo toh baad mein gunjan ka phone aaya tab mujhe pata chala ki tu bina bataye college chala gaya!"
"Aur tujhe wo wala incident yaad hai, jab Anusha ne hum dono ke saath two timing ki thi?" armaan asked.
"of course, main wo kaise bhool sakta hun!" samrat laughed, "usne sirf apni shopping list ko poora karne ke liye hamein apna boyfriend banaya tha… aur jis din uski list khatam ho gayi, tab usne hum dono se break-up kar liya!"
"wo toh mujhe baad mein pata chala tha ki wo hum dono ko bluff kar rahi thi!" armaan commented, "aur gunjan toh hamesha hamare beech left out feel karti thi…. Uske saamne jab bhi bike racing ki baat karo, toh kitni irritation hoti thi use!"
"Haan! Maine usse kaha bhi, ki ek baar tumhe aur ek baar mujhe support kare, magar wo bike par baithne se hi darr jaati thi!" samrat chuckled at this statement. He admitted that even now, gunjan was scared of bikes. She would rather prefer to walk than to sit on bikes. And this is the reason why she used to feel irritated whenever samrat and armaan discussed about bikes.
"Mujhe college ke dino ki bahut yaad aati hai armaan!" he said, "agar gunjan kabhi mujhse kisi baat ko lekar naraaz ho jaati thi, toh use manane ke liye mujhe uske saath poora lecture attend karna padta tha!"
"haan! Tera chehra uss din dekhna laayak hota tha!" armaan teased him, "aisa lagta tha jaise tujhe marathon mein participate karne ko bol dia gaya ho!"
"aur nahi toh kya! Lecture attend karna kisi sar dard se kam thodi hota hai!" samrat said.
Samrat went on speaking about other incidents of college, but armaan could hardly control his guilt now, which was over-taking his happy-go-lucky behaviour with samrat. He tried his level best to be normal with samrat, but everytime he looked at his face, he felt ashamed on himself.
"bas kar samrat!" he finally said, "aur kitna guilty feel karwaoge?"
"tum aisa kyun keh rahe ho armaan?"
"tum achhe se jaante ho ki main aisa kyun keh raha hun…." Armaan answered, "mujhe college kar har ek din yaad hai sam, aur wo din bhi achhe se yaad hai jab maine Tumpar bina wajah haath utha dia tha…"
"lekin armaan…"
"no sam! Please aaj mujhe kehne do!" armaan stopped him, "tumhe andaaza bhi nahi hai sam ki main kitna guilty feel kar raha hun…. Maine…. Apne….. apne bhai…. Jaise dost pe haath uthaya…. Ek baar bhi…. Tumhari baat sunne ki koshish nahi ki… tumne… kitni baar kaha ki tumhari koi galti nahi hai…. Fir bhi maine tum par bharosa nahi kiya… tumhara best friend hone ke baawajud bhi maine tum par trust nahi kar saka…"
"armaan please!" samrat interrupted, "tum kyun itna guilty feel kar rahe ho? Main toh kisi se bhi naraaz nahi hun…. Bhala apne doston se bhi koi naraaz reh sakta hai kya?"
"but still sam…. Us din jo hua, wo nahi hona chahiye tha…"
"I agree. Us din jo bhi hua, bahut bura tha… infact, mujhe bura zarur laga tha, lekin iska ye matlab toh nahi hai na ki main naraaz ho jaaun, aur wo bhi tab, jab main ye jaanta hun ki us din jo hua wo sirf ek mis-understanding ki wajah se hi hua tha…"
"mis-understanding ho ya na ho sam, tere saath galat hua. Tune apne doston ko kho dia, unka trust kho dia, college mein hi nahi, poore sheher mein teri reputation kharab ho gayi thi…. Aur ye hi nahi, gunjan se itna pyaar karne ke baad bhi tujhe usse door jaana pada… itna kuchh ho gaya aur tu ab bhi keh raha hai ki tu kisi se naraaz nahi hai?" armaan looked at samrat in disbelief.
"maine kaha na armaan, tum sabko sirf ek mis-understanding thi, warna main achhe se jaanta hun, ki tu mujh par kabhi haath nahi uthaata, aur gunjan bhi kabhi mujhse door nahi jaati… seriously, mujhe tumse koi naraazgi nahi hai… infact, mujhe kisi se bhi koi shikayat nahi hai… kyunki jo hona tha wo toh ho chuka hai… ab use baar baar yaad karke hum use badal toh nahi sakte na…" samrat said calmly.
"lekin iss baat ka guilt toh mujhe hamesha rahega sam, ki teri koi galti nahi thi… fir bhi maine tujh par… apne bhai jaise dost pe haath uthaaya…. Use ek cheater ke roop mein dekha…"
"come on armaan, kaun se dost aapas mein nahi ladte-jhagadte hain? Hum toh best buddies hain yaar! Aur thodi bahut ladai toh har jagah hoti hai…. Infact honi bhi chahiye, kyunki hum ladai bhi toh usse hi karte hain jise hum apna maante hain!" samrat smiled slightly.
"aur tujhe… mujh par gussa nahi aata hai…?" armaan asked in a serious tone.
"nahi, lekin ab bahut tez gussa aa raha hai!" samrat said, "main kab se bol raha hun ki tujhe mujhse maafi maangne ki koi zarurat nahi hai, tujhe guilty feel karne ki koi zarurat nahi hai, fir bhi tu meri baat hi nahi sun raha hai! Dekh agar tu mujhse sorry kehne ke liye hi yahan aaya hai toh main jaa raha hun!"
Armaan smiled with teary eyes. His eyes were filled on seeing that how forgiving samrat was, and what kind of a heart he had, that even after suffering this much, he open heartedly-welcomed armaan, and did not utter even a single word in complain.
"ab tujhe hug karne ke liye specially bolna padegi kya?" samrat looked at armaan.
And without wasting even a second, armaan hugged samrat, again saying sorry to him. But samrat did not listen to him and hugged him back, his eyes were also equally teary. They both were not only best friends- they were instead more like two brothers, who fight with each other, compete with each other, quarrel with each other, but no matter what, always remained each other in times of needs. They broke the hug after a while.
"aur ab agar tune ek baar aur bhi sorry kaha, toh aaj se teri-meri dosti khatam!" samrat said in a fake threatening tone and then laughed again with armaan, again hugging each other.
After a while, both remained there, discussing about Dr. Shashank and gunjan. Samrat gave his opinion to wipe away the differences between the two, but armaan did not seem to agree on his decision.
"mujhe nahi lagta sam ki wo teri baat sunenge… aur gunjan ko jitna main jaanta hun, wo bahut ziddi hai… wo bhi tumhari koi baat nahi maanegi."
"lekin main chup chaap kaise baith sakta hun armaan?" samrat spoke, "gunjan apne papa ke bahut kareeb hai…. Bhale hi wo mujhse na kehti ho, lekin main uski aankhon mein wo takleef dekh sakta hun… jis din se wo Dr. Shashank se milke aayi hai, uss din se hi wo pareshan hai!"
"lekin unhone ne kitna galat kiya tumhare saath! Bina kisi wajah tumhe cheating ke case mein involve kiya…. Itna kuchh hone ke baad bhi tum ye chahte ho ki gunjan Dr. Shashank se baat kare?" armaan said.
"I know ki unhone jo kiya wo galat tha, lekin unka iraada toh galat nahi tha na? Wo sirf yehi chahte the ki gunjan ka future secured rahe…. Isliye…"
"isliye unhone tumhe gunjan se door karke uski shaadi mujhse karwa deni chaahi… how ridiculous!" armaan interrupted.
"par unhe agar aisa lagta tha ki gunjan tumhare saath khush…"
"come on sam!" armaan exclaimed, "I seriously tell you, agar gunjan ki shaadi mujhse hui hoti, toh wo kabhi khush nahi reh paati….. kyunki bhale hi main use ek achhi life deta, lekin sachcha pyaar main use kabhi nahi de paata…. Wo sirf tumhi de sakte ho use…"
"aur ab yehi baat mujhe Dr. Shashank ko samjhana hai…" samrat spoke, "main unhe ye vishwaas dilaana chahta hun ki gunjan mere saath hamesha khush rahegi… main uski har zarurat poora karunga, aur kabhi use shikayat ka mauka nahi doonga."
"tu gunjan se bahut pyaar karta hai na?" armaan questioned, smiling slightly.
"haan!" samrat replied, "main use apni zindagi se bhi zyada chahta hun. Aur main ye bhi achhe se jaanta hun ki wo apne papa ke kitne kareeb hai, use kitna bura lag raha hoga iss samay! Isliye main nahi chahta ki un dono ke beech koi doori ho…"
"tujhe gunjan aur uski khushiyon ka kitna khayal hai sam!" armaan complimented again with a wide smile, "she's damn lucky to have you as a life partner…. Jo har kadam par uska saath dega! Tumse zyada pyaar use aur koi nahi de payega!"
"no armaan, lucky toh main hun, jo mujhe gunjan jaisi patni mili hai…." Samrat stated and recalled the days when Indira passed away and how maturely gunjan handled the situation and took care of his family as her own, "usne har kadam pe mera saath dia hai…. Maine use bahut hurt kiya, use takleef di, use mujhse nafrat karne par majboor kar dia, lekin usne kabhi kuchh nahi kaha…. Sirf meri maan ki wajah se. Unke jaane ke baad poore ghar ko usne hi sambhaalna…. Jab suhani depressed thi, tab uska saath dia, ek dost ki tarah, ek behen ki tarah…… ek maan ki tarah…"
"log sahi hi kehte hain sam…. Ki jo kismat mein likha hota hai, wo hokar hi rehta hai…. Tumhara aur gunjan ka saath toh kismat ka faisla hai… aur isliye tum dono ka saath hamesha ke liye hai!" armaan smiled.
"aur hamari dosti bhi!"
Saying this, samrat once again hugged armaan, celebrating their re-union again- their brother-hood again.
"very bad… tum dono apni teesri saathi ko bhool gaye??!"
Both the boys heard a soft voice complaining from behind. They broke the hug and looked back, only to see gunjan standing there with a bright smile on her face and her eyes twinkling with happiness. She walked upto them with her hands folded against her stomach.
"nahi baba, hamari aisi himmat, ki hum Dr. Gunjan Shergill ko bhool jaayein?" armaan sighed.
"aur main kabhi bhoolne dungi bhi nahi!" she smiled.
"lekin tumhe kaise pata chala ki hum dono yahan milne waale hain?" samrat looked at gunjan confusingly.
"samrat, tum shayad bhool rahe ho, ki main tumhari wife hone se pehle tumhari aur armaan ki best friend hun…. Tum dono ka har ek secret main bahut achhe se jaanti hun!" gunjan grinned, "toh main ye bhi jaanti thi ki tum dono isi jagah par bike racing ke liye aate the…. Aur ye bhi jaanti thi ki aaj bhi tum dono yahin miloge!"
"Hmm… toh ab Dr. Gunjan Shergill se seedhe Gunjan Shergill the great detective banne ka iraada hai kya?" armaan commented.
"waise idea bura nahi hai…. Isi bahaane tum dono nazar toh rakh sakungi!" gunjan laughed, "ki mere pati aur mera dost mere peeth peechhe kya kya gul khilayenge!"
"lekin filhaal abhi hamein ghar chalna chahiye…" samrat said, "mujhe bahut zor ki bhookh lagi hai…"
"haan toh chalo na! Infact maine ghar pe tum dono ke liye aaj achha sa lunch bana ke rakha hai!" gunjan smiled.
"really?" samrat looked at gunjan with a wide smile.
"haan… aaj itne dino baad hum teeno saath hain… toh maine socha ki isi khushi ko saath milkar celebrate karein!"
"not a bad idea!" armaan too agreed.
"toh chalein?"
With that, samrat, gunjan and armaan walked together, laughing and giggling amongst each other, cherishing their old friendship which had faded in these years, but still it was not broken. These three, extremely different from one another, yet share a strong bond of care, of love, of friendship- they were friends, they are friends, and they will be friends forever, no matter what situation comes.
And even samrat and gunjan too would be friends, no matter that they are married. They started their beautiful journey with the strong base of friendship and they crossed many hurdles, to reach the destination of what is called love. They were bound together for eternity… because destiny had made them for each other…!
