Part 7

Dev taking the envelop as he opened & read it…& His face lost colour… Pallavi noticed the same cold look in his eyes…The same look he had when she mentioned his wife a few days back. His hand that was holding the paper turned into a fist…crushing paper into a ball…

Pallavi—ermm Mr.Khanna is everything ok? (she tried to gain his attention…tried to get some response) Is something wrong? Mr. Khanna… (she touched him lightly to shake him)

Dev looked up at her…when she touched him…it was as if, he totally had forgotten about her presence, he seem to be disoriented, confused…😕 was now trying figuring out what they were doing here ?😕😕 …when she heard Pallavi calling him again…since by then waiter had also arrived with their order

Pallavi—ermmm Mr.Khanna..aap…

Dev (standing up)--- Pallavi I have to go…u have your dinner…I…(he just left from there)

Pallavi stood there shocked, surprised…she tried stopping him but he was already out of restaurant…far away from her sight…she saw Dev rush out of the restaurant and out of the hotel... She prayed & hoped everything would be fine..(to herself) hope its nothing serious.😕

But she could not stop wondering what happened, and why he left so suddenly. She decided to go back to her room... skipped the dinner she didn't had an appetite... She had to be prepared for the meeting in an hour ... She was sure Dev would be back before the meeting, because he never neglected his work.

Its been 3-4 hours Dev still isn't back…😕 Pallavi waited for him for long…she had to attend the last meeting all alone by herself she gave a lame excuse for Dev being missing…she ensured the clients that he will send the signed papers as soon as possible… thankfully the clients agreed… 😊

Pallavi doesn't know how many times she tried calling Dev's mobile…😕 but no use it was unreachable …she sat in the living room waiting for Dev…giving up calling Dev's number she started packing her bags for their departure the following morning... after finishing packing she sat near the window...she cud see rain falling hard outside…😊 she remembered how both she & khushi along with her mother used to njoy rains…😃...she liked the sound of rain drops ... Lost in childhood memories she didn't realized when she fell asleep🥱 🥱 …it was in morning when she woke up to some one knocking on the door…

She took a moment to realize that she had fallen asleep sitting at the window…as she opened the door it was hotel staff informing that car has been arranged to drop them at the airport…She checked her watch it was 6am in the morning & they have to catch 8am flight…Hurrying she went to get ready... & came to the living room of the suite expecting Dev to be there ...but to her surprise he was nowhere to be found...

Pallavi--Did he come back last night? I hope he is not sleeping, we'll miss our flight...

On an instinct she knocked on his door...to ensure he is ready...as they will have to leave in an hour... She knocked many times but no response finally she pushed open the door...On entering she was shocked…to see

Dev lying on his bed... face down... with his black suit still on...The suit and the covers of the bed were soaked with water... His hair was wet...

Pallavi rushed toward the bed and tried to wake him up... She started calling his name, but he did not respond.

She noticed Dev had a irregular breathing... She placed her hand on the cheek... it was burning. Dev had a terrible fever....

Immediately she called for a doctor…after checking Dev

Doctor—Madam, by any chance was he on any medication?

Pallavi (she had no clue abt it) —ermm…I am not sure …maine inhe koi dawai lete huye nahi dekha…still main inke samaan mein dekhti hoon shayad koi dawai ho? (as she turned to leave)

Doctor—Ok…also bring him a change…we will have to change his clothes…😊

Pallavi opened Dev's suitcase. ..The only things she could find were clothes and project files... she went to his bathroom. On the shelf above the sink she found a little packet with medicines. On the label she saw Dev's name...taking it She gave it to the doctor...after analysing & prescribing him medicines...& giave Dev an injection...

Doctor--Miss kapoor... Your boss has a severe throat infection...These antibiotics where given to him a week ago for his throat infection... aur shayad inhone apni medication skip ki hai ...as he had to finish all these by now... On top of his infection he got wet in the rain last night and he has been in his wet clothes too long... He has a very bad fever. I will prescribe different antibiotics, and you give him two painkillers every five to six hours to reduce the fever. He needs complete bed rest and make him drink a lot of water and juice.

Doctor went on & on with his preciptions & advices...but Pallavi cud help but wonder & feel bad to see Dev in this condition

How could she not notice Dev hadn't eaten well for the past few days... recollecting back she realised she doesn't remember him seeing eating anything...just a coffee or juice once in a while How could she miss that She looked after everybody, how could she not look after her guardian, her boss. ...with whom she had been here on this trip for last 3-4 days

Pallavi came out of her thots when she heard doctor calling her again

Doctor-- Are you still with me!! ...(pallavi just nodded in yes) ...good...Give me a hand, we have to get him out of these clothes... Get some warm ones will you! ...

Pallavi looked at the doctor in horror. 😲 She had to help the doctor undress her boss? 😲😳 As it is she had a hard time talking to MrKhanna , after this she would have a hard time facing him.

But the doctor's strict look left her no options. Slightly flushed she helped the doctor. 😳

After the doctor left Pallavi called up the reception to get her the medicines and to cancel their flight. Flying back was out of the question according to the doctor.

Pallavi cancelled their return ticket…she wanted to inform back home also …but she realized its no use…Massi & prachi will worry unnecessarily…infact it was Kabir who told her not to do so as she called Kabir informing him abt dev's health…Kabir had been out on a business conference out of India which he cudn't leave in middle & come…even if he does it will still take him 1-2 day to reach there...

Kabir—hope pallavi you will manage…I can't come just now…its not possible...mujhe pahunchne mein bhi do din lag jayenge ... but I will try to be there…infact main sid se baat karta hoon…he will join you…

Pallavi—its ok bhaiyaa…I will manage…ab Mr.Khanna thode better hai…doctor dobara check karke gaye hai... & Sid Sir se maine baat ki hai…he is still stuck in Goa…waha ka project has been a little mess…(apprehensive) waise ermm … I think Mrs.Khanna ko inform karna chaiye…its

Kabir—main dekhta hoon… You take care…& koi problem ho toh bata dena…

Pallavi spent whole day& night beside Dev to ensure he was OK…she was there incase he might need anything…She made sure he got his medicines one way or another...He was in & out of consciousness...to delirious & weak to remain awake ...

It was on third day morning...the fever subdued a little...Dev woke up to find himself in his hotel room in his night suit... 😕😕 .. He could not remember anything that happened the past two days. ..

Pallavi entered his room with a glass of juice and his medicines. Relieved to see him awake she took a deep breath and quickly said a prayer. 😊 & sighed in relief... She smiled at him and placed his medicine and the glass of water on the nightstand...as she saw him trying to get up

Pallavi (rushed to his side…happy to see him conscious again)—aap uth gaye…good…(she made him lie again)u ok? (dev just nodded in yes)main doctor ko inform kar deti hoon…he will check on you…😊

Dev was confused what they are still doing there in Hotel room…😕😕 he was little disoriented…

Dev—ermm hum abhi tak yaha hai…😕😕 (coughed a little)hume mumbai mein hona chaiye tha…humari flight miss hogayi kya?😕

Pallavi(smiled)—miss nahi…cancel hogayi hai…two days back…I guess you don't remember but you had a serious throat infection...& fever bhi...kya zarut thi aapko barish mein bheegne ki 😕😕 You still have a fever I think. (she placed her hand on Dev's forehead. ..She met his eyes with hers and suddenly retreated her hand..)

Checking his fever with the back of her hand was the most natural thing to do the last two days...but now she felt conscious and nervous doing so..😳

It was then Doctor interrupted…he checked upon Dev & was happy with improvement

Doctor—You are doing fine Mr.Khanna…😊 (giving him medicines) u just need more of rest…😊😊 & I hope is baar aap apni medications skip nahi karenge…only we know how we managed …ya aapki PA janti hai…(to pallavi)abhi fever itna nahi hai...but still there is weakness make sure yeh apni dawai time pe le & doesn't skip them… 😊😊

Pallavi—sure doctor…😊😊 is baar yeh skip nahi karenge…& Thank you so much…😊

Dev—ermm Doctor when can we go back…😕

Doctor—I wud advice aap ek-do din rest le lijiye…😊 but if its some urgency aap kal tak wapis ja sakte hai…but don't stress out urself much…take little easy atleast for next few days…😊

Dev just nodded…

few minutes later... pallavi came in with something for him to eat & his medications…Handing him the soup ...but being still little weak he was not able to hold the spoon without shaking vigorously and spilling the soup...seeing the mess he is creating...Pallavi fed him...

It might be just a small gesture from Pallavi but for Dev it was the most touching thing...He kept looking at her face... In spite being sick he could notice how much trouble she went trough for him. ... he cud make out she herself look exhausted & tired... looked a bit pale herself. ..

Which was true infact ..Pallavi was so worried abt him that she did not sleep well...She was so engrossed in taking care of Dev that she kind of neglected herself. ...She felt herself guilty for the state he was in... she shud have been careful abt him...she shud have noticed Dev have been skipping his meals ...

On other hand Dev felt guilty for putting Pallavi in this mess. 😕 ...He felt sorry...that because of him she is going through so much trouble... For Dev it was too overwhelming…he kept staring at her… he came out of his thots only when he saw her giving him medicines...Pallavi was abt to leave when

Dev(he wanted to say something)—ermm who…Pallavi …main…I mean…I

Pallavi—I know Mr.Khanna…aap kal hi wapis jana chahenge…😆 maine travel agent se baat kar li hai…he is trying as soon as possible…

Dev—Its Ok…(sighing) actually…I ...I mean... I am sorry…meri wajah its been a trouble for you…I…

Pallavi(interrupted)—aap sorry kyun keh rahe hai? I am sure aapne apni tabiyat janbhuj ke kharab nahi kari...infact koi bhi nahi karta...apne aap kharab ho jati hai...& it was not a trouble…really😊 …but yes aapko pata tha aapko infection tha toh u shud have been careful...barish mein bheegne se bachna chaiye tha... (smiled) but i guess...shayad aapko barish mein bheegna acha lagta hoga…😆😆 dats not a big problem ...but it has its own disadvantages…agli baar khayal rakheiga…😊 (she left from there) now u take rest 😊... (seeing Dev lost in thots...she thot she shud leave for him to rest) ermm aapko kuch aur chaiye... (Dev nodded in No)

As pallavi left...Dev cud hear her words "aapko shayad barish mein bheegna acha lagta hoga" ...He tried to recollect what had happened two days back ..

After reading the envelope...which was like always...he receives it once a year ...or more frequently... after doing the needful concerning the letter... He sat there silently...how he wished that all this ends soon...but he knows it best that it will not...He doesn't for how long he sat at that lonely place...remembering his past times...didn't even realised when it started raining... How he had wished that he was still a small boy...who cud run either to his MOM or his Badi maa to solve his problems... He felt lonely in whole world...any1 looking at him from afar must feel jealous of his success as a businessman, he has everything name,fame , money which can make any man jealous... but only he knows how lonely it feels when inspite of having everything you are still empty handed... you have nothing...How he wished his life wud have been different...

Gradually tired of sitting there he doesn't know when he dragged himself back to hotel...his room...

Few hours later…

Pallavi was in her room...after she had called kabir abt Dev's improvement...& they might be back by tomorrow evening... Kabir told her he is on his way back & he will reach mumbai before them...

She was just resting in her room when she got up with a start when she heard a glass crashing from Dev's room…she rushed inside…
