Chapter Three: Blood Brothers
Arnav spread the mulch evenly on a flower bed, his hands dexterous while the sun broke the horizon, growing slowly in to a fearsome ball of fire which illuminated the world. Arnav's back was bent as he sat on his haunches willing his mind to concentrate at the task in hand rather than the sweet voice that kept hammering inside his head.
I love the smell of lilies Arnav. Won't you buy me some?
Arnavs jaw clenched as he tried to keep the oaths that sprang to his lips contained within. His hand shook with the trawl still held firmly, as he tried to come to grips with the situation, with the anger and bitter resentment, with the immeasurable pain.
"Bhai?"
Arnav turned slightly to see Shyam in black track pants and a white vest standing at the French windows a yoga mat in hand. Arnav nodded slightly as he went back to his flowers and Shyam laid down his mat with a contended smile, skipping in place for a few minutes, getting his heart rate up.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready for work?" Shyam asked his silent brother as he started doing sit ups. Arnav smiled down at the flowers he was weeding, grateful for the distraction his brother offered. "Shouldn't you be getting an education?" Arnav shot back.
"Ha ha very funny" Shyam wheezed between sets. "I don't have a class till noon."
"And I'm not expected till next Monday" Arnav replied as he stood up and wiped his dirty hands on a rag.
"They gave you a week off!" Shyam said astounded in mid sit up. Arnav grinned as he walked past his brother. "Who did you sleep with to achieve that?" Shyam asked and got pushed in the pool for his cheek.
oOo
Breakfast was a tense affair with Akash and Arnav sitting opposite each other, Nani sitting at the head of the family, Shyam slumped next to Arnav shoveling his food while Anjali stood above them all, making sure they had hot food to eat. Manorma bit in to her third puree and frowned when she saw Shyam pick up his fourth.
"You have lost so much weight Chhotay" Anjali fussed as she ladled more alou sabzi in to Arnav's thhal, "you didn't take care of yourself at all in Paris did you? I bet you often went without food because you couldn't be bothered with fixing yourself dinner."
Arnav didn't respond but kept his head down, covering his thhal with his hand when Anjali tried to ladle more kheer in. "Tsk! Chhotay you need to eat!" Anjali whined and was rewarded with Arnav pushing back his chair so hard that it went crashing to the floor.
"Stop calling me Chhotay!" he yelled in Anjali's face before he stalked off in the direction of his room stopping for a fraction of a second to look a startled Khushi in the eyes as she stood at the entrance of the dining room door, a witness to everything.
"That bas***d!" Akash ground out through gritted teeth as he propelled himself out of his chair as well. Anjali held his arm before he could follow his brother and thrash him within an inch of his life. "No Akash, he's right I shouldn't call him that it reminds him of'"
"I don't care" Akash yelled "he has no right to walk in here after all this time and talk to you like that!"
"Akash please" Anjali begged as she cupped his face. "I don't need this right now."
"Akash bitwa" Nani stood up "I think you should get going to work."
"But Nani"
"Akash!" Nani said in a no-nonsense tone which meant that she was not willing to listen to another word. Akash fumed in place for a second, staring his grandmother down but he gave up soon when Anjali stroked his cheek quietly. Clenching his fists by his sides for control he turned on his heels and walked out the door stopping suddenly when he came face to face with Khushi right outside.
Khushi looked up in to his face and he looked back down suddenly embarrassed that she had seen a glimpse of their not so happy family. "I'" he started, a blush creeping up his face "I just don't like it when people talk to Di like that."
"I can understand" Khushi said quietly looking down at her hand which was now ensconced in Akash's, his thumb stroking her palm lightly, starting a fire which made her breathing come in shallow spurts. "You were right about him not treating her right" she said in a low voice, her senses heightening when Akash stepped closer, her throat going dry "but Di is right. There is no point in escalating the situation." Akash looked at her sharply, his eyes blazing with hurt that she didn't understand how he felt. "You're better than that" Khushi said steadily, never breaking eye contact.
Akash nodded his head as he looked down at their intertwined fingers. "I have to go" he murmured giving her hand a gentle squeeze "I'll see you once I come back, ok?" Khushi nodded and watched him leave her insides boiling with rage at the way that dragon had treated his devi of a sister. Akash might not be able to tell him off, risking a showdown between the brothers and the entire family getting involved, but Khushi could tell him a thing or two.
Khushi followed the path to the Dragons Lair which Arnav had taken a few minutes ago.
oOo
Chhotay'. Please Chhotay!
Arnav slid the French window open to get some much needed air.
You've gotten thinner Arnav, let me fatten you up. French toast?
He paced up and down in a futile attempt to get the voices out of his head.
Forgive me son for I have sinned.
He sat down, defeated at the last voice from the past that always lay dormant in its agony. He buried his head in his hands completely giving in to the anguish.
"You jerk!"
His head shot up at the voice, a new voice, a real voice. She stood in front of him in the same faded blue jeans as yesterday, a red t-shirt with a maroon Che Guevara picture on it, the legend 'Freedom' emblazoned on top. Her hair was a mess of unruly curls that he could tell she hadn't bothered to brush. Her cheeks were a blazing red but not as fierce as her eyes which, if they could, would scorch his very existence in to ash.
Khushi bunched up her fists as she strode forward and looked down at the abominable man sitting on the wicker chair, his hands held in front of his face in a supplicating way as if he was praying, his eyes shocked. "You disrespectful moron! Is that anyway to talk to your older sister!" she cried.
"Is this any way to talk to a total stranger?" the exasperating man asked calmly as if they were talking about the weather taking Khushi aback. She was flustered for about a second before she got her bearings back.
"Don't change the subject! Di has been nothing but worried about you and you throw it in her face like an ungrateful brat!"
"That's none of your business" came the calm reply.
"Like hell it isn't! You do not just barge in and treat a woman like that" Khushi countered trying to make him see the error of his ways.
"I will treat my sister however I want" Arnav said as he stood up, completely tired of the conversation.
"Yes I can see how you chose to do that" Khushi sneered at his back, completely incensed with his lukewarm reaction "by keeping her clothed in a shroud for the rest of her life because her husband up and died on her!"
Arnav stood stock still his back stiffening; Khushi breathed a satisfied sigh finally getting the reaction she had expected all along. Arnav turned ice cold eyes on her before he had her pinned to the wall in a death grip. "Say that again and I'll kill you."
"You don't scare me" Khushi retorted "men who can only show their superiority by putting women down! Huh! You're pathetic." Khushi sneered.
Arnav's lips curled in to a scowl as he pulled her to him and then slammed her hard in to the wall again. "You don't know anything about me" he growled.
"I don't want to know anything about you" Khushi spat "Akash had told me that you're a heartless bas***d, but he didn't tell me you're a callous monster."
Arnav let go of her arms and backed away a step giving himself breathing space. "Well then what are you still doing here" he said in a dangerously low voice "get out." Khushi stood leaning against the wall, suddenly finding it hard to stay on her two feet without his hurtful but supporting hands. "I said GET OUT!" he screamed in her face taking a threatening step forward.
"Bhai?" Shyam stepped in to the poolside garden from the French windows, his book bag slung on his shoulder. "Khushi?" he looked between the two, his brows furrowing then suddenly clearing as he understood what must have happened. He turned cold eyes towards Khushi "I think we should be leaving or else we'll be late for class."
Khushi nodded and walked out of the garden giving one last scathing look to Arnav who didn't blink, didn't look away but stared at her with eyes devoid of any emotion, least of all regret.
