Part 7 - part comp.
Riddhima sat on the bathroom counter with her eyes closed. This was so akward. Armaan was crotched on the floor shaving her legs. She would have never agreed to let him, but she was in such a tight position, or so she thought. She couldn't bare let others she her with hairy legs. She didn't have time to go get it done at a spa either. She didn't know what made her let Armaan do it for her. She would have never let him, but lately she felt more at ease around him. She was more comfortable and open with him. She thought about how much has changed between them. She couldn't even remember the last time they had fought! She hadn't changed anything though, well aside from an addition of cravings and mood swings she could'nt control. He had been extra careful and kind to her. Why was that? How had their lives come to this turn? Maybe having a baby with someone did that to you.
Armaan gulped as he made the mistake of looking up while shaving Riddhima's legs. Why in the world was she not wearing underwear? She clearly wasn't aware that he could see up her skirt from this angle. He knew she had mentioned it was uncomfortable to wear certain things to the doctor, but he hadn't really paid mind to that. He tried to stop his mind from wandering back to the last time he had seen her without her panties. How her hot flesh felt underneath him during those long sweaty hours. He closed his eyes trying to shake away those thougts, they were. So not allowed.
"Armaan? When did you become so caring?" Armaan laughed as her question managed to slightly distract him. "I've always been nice Basket. It's just a different story that you never made a note of it. I guess we've always been to busy arguing so you would have never noticed. Par now that the situation is such you are getting to see the real me." Riddhima looked at him confused. "The real you? Kya matlab?" Armaan smiled slightly, "things and people aren't always what they seem. Anyways enough of this chit chat, let's boogey, doctors waiting."
Riddhima watched as Armaan left the bathroom. Why was he so cryptic? What did he mean? She sighed and followed her out.
---------------
Riddhima sat staring at the doctor open mouthed. How could Dr. Keerti say that in front of Armaan? She knew their situation, but still! Riddhima watched as a flustered Armaan excused himself from the room. "Dr. Keerti what do you mean I have to have sex? You know our situation right? I mean.." Dr. Keerti nodded. "Look Riddhima I'm sorry if you didn't want me to mention that in front of Armaan, but it's true. You are only in your 5th month so you have a few monthes to think, but labor is 90 times easier IF you stay sexually active. It helps greatly. Most women who don't experience MUCH more pain and some are forced to undergo a c side birth as a normal birth becomes impossible. It doesn't have to be love filled love making, it can be slow and easy help. Please consider it. Aside from tis everything is normal. Next month we can see the gender." Riddhima nodded. "Theek hai, I'll take your leave then." Riddhima left the room and met a flustered Armaan in the hallway. They silently made their way towards the car neither able to utter a single word.
The eerie silence was broken as Riddhima's phone shrilled as it rang. Riddhima saw the name flashing on the screen and tears began to pour out of her eyes. Armaan noticed her crying. "Kya hua? kaun hai?" Riddhima replied in a mere whisper, "Abhi."
It was the first time he had tried to contact her in months. Armaan looked at her. "Why do you think he's..." She shook her head. "Pata nahin...par I can't do this now...I'm not ready for this..." She let the call go to her messages then called voicemail to hear what he said.
"Hey Ridz, um..call me back when you can. Hope you're doing okay. I uh...I miss you."
The line beeped indicating the end of the message.
"Armaan why does it hurt so much having your heart broken?" Armaan sighed, "Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and just live trying to make the one you love a better person. Sometimes it's just enough to see that person and have them hate you. At least you can see them. It hurts less to see them with someone else or without you then it does to not see them at all."
Riddhima looked at him as he parked his car in front of her parents house. "No Armaan it isn't. Waise how would you know? You've never been in love na? You wouldn't understand." Riddhima got out of the car while Armaan blinked back tears. "You go ahead, I'll pick you up in a few hours. I have some stuff to take care of."
Armaan zoomed off letting his tears fall, her words ringing in his ears. how would you know? you've never been in love na? you wouldn't understand.
He slightly laughed at the irony. He would know better then anyone else, just because he tried to hide his emotions doesn't mean he had never had any.
He parked his car and sat down at the seaside, watching the water hit the rocks. He took out his secret photo of her and let his emotions out.
Kaise bataayein, kyun tujhko chahe, yaara bataa na paaye.

"Armaan?"
Armaan turned around quickly wiping his tears and smiled as he saw Shilpa standing there with a worried expression on her face.
------
Riddhima paced around the living room angry. It was past dinnertime and Armaan still hadn't returned. His number was coming as unreachable. Angrily she tried once again and was relieved as she heard it ringing.
Riddima was shocked out of her wits to hear a women answer.
"Hello?"
"Hello? Yeh toh Armaan ka phone hai! who are you?"
"Woh this is Shilpa. Armaan left his phone at my place by mistake. This is Basket right? Can you please ask him to come pick it up when he can? Also tell him I had a great time tonight and I'm looking forward to next time please."
Riddhima furiously hung up. He left for no reason to go meet and fool around with a GIRL? When he had a pregnant girl to take care of here? How could he? She heard the door ring and opened it with daggers in her eyes as Armaan came in.
"Hey Basket, sorry I think I left my phone with someone by mistake. You ready to go?"
Riddhima felt herself boiling as she saw a slight lipstick mark on his cheek. She wiped it off with her hand then marched out to the car not caring about her parents or him.
Armaan mentally smacked his head realizing Shilpa must have left a lipstick mark there when she kissed him goodbye.
--
Armaan drove home in silence wondering what to say. "Um toh aunty uncle kaise hai?" Riddhima glared at him. "Tumhe kya? You toh weren't there. You were with some larki na?" Armaan gulped. "you had dinner?" Riddhima looked away. "You wouldn't know would you? I bet you had dinner right? and maybe some special DESERT with that SHILPA?"
Armaan was shocked. "Kya? HOW do you know about Shilpa?" Riddhima mocking laughed. "I called your phone, she picked up. You left your phone in her house. Now tell me pleasee, this shilpa is so important that you BLEW OFF my parents? you left me there without a word? you were HOURS LATE, and didnt even bother giving me a message?"
Armaan sighed. "Look, I'm sorry Basket. I got caught up with some things okay. Or waise bhi how would I understand anything?" Riddhima looked at him strangely then realized he was upset about her early comment. So he did love someone, he did understand. He loved Shilpa, but couldn't be with her because of Riddhima.
"You love her a lot don't you?" Armaan sighed, letting a tear slide down his cheek. "How do you know?" Riddhima looked out the window, "I just put the pieces together. You love her so much don't you?" Armaan sighed. "Apne jaan se bhi zyada." Riddhima looked at him. How she wished Abhi had loved her that much too. Come to think of it, did she ever love him that much?
"Armaan I know our situation is strange and all, but I...I don't want you to sacrifice your love or life for me or the baby..." Armaan looked at her. "Don't worry basket. Ye baacha MERA hai. Aur I want to be here. I want to be a part of this." Riddhima nodded marveling at what an amazing guy he actually was.
---
Riddhima was standing in her room when suddenly the power went out. Before she could scream Armaan ran in holding a lighter. "Sh Basket I'm right here, darna mat." Armaan knew Riddhima was extremely scared of the dark and as soon as the lights went out. Riddhima quickly hugged Armaan as he held up a candle.
Armaan held Riddhima tightly with one arm and put the candle down with another. He quickle held her waist and ran his hands through her hair trying to calm her. "Shh Basket, relax. I'm right here." Riddhima shook her head. "Nahin, Armaan mujhe bohot dar lag raha hai." Armaan's grip around her tightened as she uknowingly nuzzled her nose and lips against his chest. Armaan led her over to the bed and made her sit down.
He held her face. "I will NEVER let anything happen to you okay?" She nodded believing him. He slowly leaned in and kissed her forehead. He then kissed either cheek. He leaned in closer and felt her breath on her lips. Her eyes were closed. He slowly closed the distance and probed her lips with his. He made her lie down and lied down next to her. He continued the kiss and slowly removed her dress. Without breaking the kiss he soon had his clothes removed too. He broke the kiss and slowly went lower leaving a trail of kisses along her body. He slowly parted her legs and entered her with a sudden thrust. He quickly claimed her lips again hushing her cry.
---
Armaan woke up in the morning feeling immense guilt. He looked at Riddhima as she woke up. Before she could utter a word he quickly spoke. "I...I'm so sorry Riddhima I didn't mean to...woh bus the darkness and candles, aur aur...what the doctor said has been roaming around in my head...aur i don't know...i'm sorry..."
Riddhima looked down and then spoke looking at him. "It's...it's okay...I know you were just trying to help. i know even i was worried about what she said. It's okay I trust you."
Armaan smiled then helped her up and get ready for school.
---
A few weeks passed with no mention of that uncertain night that had transpired between the duo. They took it as the medical necessity and nothing more. Armaan spent increasing amounts of time out without her. She never knew where he went, but knew a couple times he was with Shilpa as she would often answer his phone.
Riddhima felt a sudden distance between them. At first she didn't realize from when, but then it clicked - it was since she had made that comment. She lay her head on his chest as she tried to sleep. She wasn't sure what was happening to them, but somehow she was worried. Was he regretting his decision of standing by them? The girl he loved, Shilpa - maybe things were working out for them? Would Armaan leave them if that was the case?
She closed her eyes letting a tear escape as her thoughts increased her fear.
--
The next day after school Riddhima was walking along side Armaan to his car when suddenly his phone rang. Seeing the name he smiled and answered immediately. "Hey Shilpa, what's up?" Riddhima frowned and instinctively held her stomach. "No ways? Okay Don't worry. You trust me na?...You love me na?...toh everything will be perfect. I promise. I'll be right there okay? Let me just get someone to drop off Riddhima."
Riddhima looked at him hurt, was she a burden on him? She didn't realize when Mr. Chatterjee spoke up to Armaan as he hung up his phone. "Hey Armaan, if you don't mind I can drop Riddhima off? In fact I was just coming to see if I could speak to her regarding something anyways." Armaan nodded. "Haan, that'd be great! Thanks so much! I gotta run! I'llsee you later Riddhima. Aur haan, please be careful!"
Riddhima nodded wishing he wouldn't leave her. She sighed as he sped off in his car. Everything had changed so much. She would do anything to get the old Armaan back, either the caring one who spent so much time with her the past few months or even the old old Armaan who would constantly bicker with her and challenge her. Why had their lives taken such a huge turn? So many changes, she didn't know if she could handle them all!
She looked up as she felt someone wiping her tear. Mr Chatterjee smiled at her, "Shh, no crying my dear. It's not good for the baby." He spoke in his soothing Bangla with his deep husky voice. It had such a calming affect. "Come on my dear, we both know this talk is necessary." Riddhima nodded agreeing with him and followed him to his car. She trusted Mr. Chatterjee more than anyone one of her friends. He silently drove to a secluded ice cream shop on the outskirts of town. After buying both of them ice cream, he sat down.
"Okay, what's going on? So first, all throughout college you both fight like cats and dogs, but somehow I could see the sparks secretly flying though neither of you did. Everyone could see how perfect you to were for each other though you both ignored it, claiming to hate each other. Then well we both know you guys got drunk, couldn't control and indulged in those hidden desires you still choose to ignore and admit - the result well we can see. Fast forward, you two are best of friends - no not friends, basically a couple with him taking care of your every need and you thoroughly enjoying it. And now, recently I've noticed a change, but I can't quite figure what it is. But take for example, your face dropped as he answered his phone. Your eyes practically pleaded him not to go, yet he did. What's going on? Why do I get the feeling there is another girl involved here somewhere?"
Riddhima looked at him fighting her tears back.
She sighed fighting tears. "Where do I start?" She spoke in English as opposed to their fun and ever sweet Bangla. He looked at her knowing something was definitely amiss. "What happened that's changed everything so much? How are you feeling? What are your feelings? Your worries?" He wiped a tear off her face.
"What's the difference between love and responsibility?" He looked at her not knowing the underlying depth to this question. "Everything was going so great. At first I was so worried kyun ki Armaan and I never got along. But he proved me wrong. He was always there for me. My every small need and desire was fulfilled even before I said anything! He always knew everything about me; as they say your enemy knows you better than anyone else. He spent every waking with me. It felt like we were a small family. My fears of how we would raise a child together were gone. I started to dream about raising our baby together, how we would argue over her first word, and it would probably end up being papa, not mama. How we would teach her how to walk, to play basketball, how we would cuddle with her, take her out, throw her parties, buy her presents. I would try and discipline her, but he would always spoil her. I don't know when I started to think like this, it just happened. Then at our last doctors appointment, Abhi called. It brought up some confused and hurt emotions in me and I wasn't sure what to do. That led to me saying some hurtful things to Armaan ' like how he wouldn't understand what I was feeling because he had never been in love. I didn't meant it. I just, I don't know. But he was so hurt. He just left me at my parents house and disappeared. That's when it all started to go down. He was gone for hours. I was so worried. I had no idea where he was for so long. Then finally someone answered his phone, but it wasn;t him. It was a girl ' Shilpa. Armaan had been with her the whole time. She said he left his phone there. Apparently they had a great time that night. He came to pick me up with a lipstick stain on his cheek. I don't know why but it hurt seeing that so much. Then well slowly he started distancing himself from me. He spends more time with Shilpa then with me. I feel like I'm losing him, WE"RE losing him. What if he decides he doesn't want to be apart of this anymore? What if he leaves me and our baby? What if he loves her?"
Riddhima ended in a whisper. Arjun Chatterjee was quiet for a while. "What if he loves her, marries her, has children with her, but still acknowledges your child together, still takes care of the baby and fulfils his duties? He will still be doing his duty right?" He looked at her intently trying to gauze her reaction to his question. She could feel him analyzing her every move, but she didn't mind. He was a psychology professor after all, he would try to understand the full situation then give his input based on that. He wouldn't just give a useless oh well or get over it. That's what she liked so much about him.
She hadn't thought that far herself. She never thought about the fact that he might actually marry elsewhere and leave them. What would she do then? "Pata nahin, I'I never thought about that. I don't'I don't think I could survive'I'" Mr. Chatterjee put his hand over hers, "shhh, relax, calm down. I didn't raise the question so you would stress out more and potentially harm the baby. He isn't going anywhere yet okay? Riddhima I want to know something honestly, is it just the baby you are worried about or'" He trailed off letting her finish the sentence herself. She closed her eyes and shook her head. "Toh what is the deeper issue here?" A tear escaped her eyes as she thought of his face. "I've fallen in love with him'"
Mr. Chatterjee nodded as if he knew this all along. She supposed he did, after all that's what he did. He analyzed people and gauzed their emotions and feelings. "Aapko pata tha?" He looked unsure for a moment then spoke with confidence. She noticed this brief gap of confidence and knew she didn't' know the full picture as he did. This made her nervous. "haan, I could see you getting closer and closer to him over these few monthes. I could see how you began relying on him for things you could do on your own. You always sought his approval. His small opinions seemed to matter more to you. You tried to hold his hand whenever possible, trying to make it seem as if you are nervous or scared, but I could see you just wanted hold his hand. Being with him, holding on to him, it seems to give you a sort of confidence and assurance. You smile when he does unknowingly. I could see you fall in love."
She paused for a moment realizing that was all true. But what was he leaving out? "I can tell you aren't telling me all you've picked up." He slightly laughed. "Well yes, I guess that's why you and Armaan our my best students huh?" She looked at him waiting for him to get to the point. He sighed and continued. "Well he seems to be uncertain about something, confused almost. At first he was purely and utterly happy regarding the baby, but overtime something has changed. He is still happy about the baby ' and possessive may I add, but he is sensing your growing attachment to him, and he seems to want to break it for some reason. This attachment doesn't seem to agree with something in his mind. He seems to be at war with something in his mind. Now the brilliant student that he is, he's trying to mask his emotions and what's going on in there. He is using every counter method he can come up with making this more difficult. But I don't understand why."
Riddhima looked at him trying to make sense of what he had just said. "Toh it's possible ki this Shilpa ' he really does love her? He really wants to be with her not me?" She watched him sigh not sure of what to say the first time all afternoon. "I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet, but yes it is possible. But it doesn't make sense, I had always thought he liked you in that sense, but now' Armaan Mallik is one complicated guy." He looked at her serious face, "what no smile at that last line? Come one I said it in a creepy voice and everything! I deserve a slight smile at least okay!" She tried to laugh at his pleas for a smile, but couldn't find it in her.
"Can you help me with something? I..I need some time away from Armaan to clear my mind. Can you help me get some of my things from our place to my parents place?" He looked at her confused, then realized she wasn't looking at him, but at the window behind him. He followed her gaze and spotted Armaan laughing and smiling while twirling a girl around in his arms. She looked like she was around Riddhima's age, maybe a year or two younger.
He nodded then helped her out to his car. She watched as he smiled hugging that girl. She began to cry silently as he didn't even turn and notice her. She had felt his presence nearby, that's why she noticed him, but could he not tell when she was around? Did he really not feel anything for her? Not in the slightest?
---
Riddhima sat in her parents house as Mr. Chatterjee helped her dad take her suitcases to her room. "Riddhima beta? What's going on?" Riddhima tried to smile, but couldn't fake it in front of her mom. "Nothing, mama, I just'I really missed you and papa. I know ki yeh baacha is both armaan and mine so I should let him be near me during the pregnancy, but I just really wanted to come home. I'I miss you guys." Padma nodded and hugged her daughter. "Shh, we missed you too beta. Ab shant ho jao, it's okay. Ab batao, does Armaan know about you coming home?" Riddhima shook her head. "Nahin'Woh..he was out with someone toh I didn't tell him'." Padma nodded realizing something was indeed wrong.
Mr. Chatterjee came down and hugged Padma and Shashank. 'Bye Mama, bye Mami. And Riddhima, don't worry. I promise everything will be okay. I gotta run now warna tumhara behen will kill me!" Riddhima nodded thanking her teacher, cum cousin in law bye. Yes, Arjun Chatterjee was her cousin's husband from her dad's side, but they chose not to share that in school. They maintained a strict teacher student relation throughout her college years, but at those few moments, the brotherly part of him came out.
Shashank sat down and hugged Riddhima welcoming her home. "Don't worry, we'll call Armaan and let him know okay?" Riddhima nodded.
Padma held Riddhima's hand. "Remember Sid? Woh larka jo tumse shaadi karma chaati thi? He's back from America. He heard about your situation with Armaan, and how you are pregnant. He came to see us yesterday. He still wants to marry you. Just as soon as your exams finish." Riddhima looked at her mother shocked. Why would any man want to marry her now, while she was pregnant with another man's child? "Mama, I need some time to think about it."
--
Riddhima watched as Armaan stormed into her parents house. "Riddhima ' YOU JUST LEFT? WITHOUT EVEN INFORMING ME?" Riddhima looked at Armaan not knowing what to say. "woh I was really missing mama, papa aur'I'm sorry'" Armaan ran his hand through his head. He spoke in a calmer voice, "Basket, dekho aisa nahin karte okay? You should have at least talked to me first na? Ab chalo, let's go home. I promise you can come visit uncle and aunty whenever you want." Riddhima shook her head. "Nahin, Armaan. I want to stay here." Armaan looked at her shocked. "Kya? Dehko, can we go talk in your room alone? Please?" Riddhima nodded and followed Armaan to her old bedroom.
"Waise congrats Armaan." He looked at her confused, "on what?" She tried her best to smile, "woh not that you told me, but you're in love with Shilpa na?" Armaan nearly fell off his bed. "KYA? Why would I be in love with my cousin?" Riddhima looked at him confused. "cousin? Then who were you hugging today?" Armaan looked at her confused, how had she seen him? "I was hugging shilpa, but only because Karan accepted her proposal. She asked him to marry her, actually she was scared to do it, par I told her to go for it as Karan is such a duffer he'd take too long! Par how did you see us?" Riddhima gulped. "uh I was at the ice cream shop with Mr. chatterjee talking about exam schedules and stuff ' woh I have to take them a month early na?" He nodded wondering if there was more to it or not.
"Riddhima please come home." She shook her head. "Nahin, I can't." He looked at her, "par KYUN?" She sighed. "Armaan if I say ki I've fallen in love with you what will you say?" Armaan looked at her shocked. Silence took over the room for a few minutes. "I'd say you're mistaking the need for your baby's father for love. It's common to mistake emotions in pregnancy." She looked at him trying to convince her. "Aur if I say you are wrong?" he sighed, "I'd say ki you aren't realized, but I'm right. It's not love Riddhima. Maybe you're right, maybe we should take a break from each other for a few days."
Riddhima nodded and watched as he left her room. Making up her mind she went down stairs to her mom. "Mama, I'm ready to marry Sid."
--------
Two more weeks passed by. Armaan had started to distance himself from Riddhima. She tried to be brave in school and in front of everyone, hoping for him to realize her love was real or for her love to die down. Either way, there was no hope left for them. She had said yes to marrying Sid. He was getting ready for the arrangements. They were to be married just after her final exam. She didn't know how the arrangement would work out with Armaan and the baby. In fact, Armaan had no idea that she was now engaged. She didn't wear the ring to school as she had no answers to the questions that would arise.
She walked through the hallway lost in her thoughts.

Riddhima sat in her car and drove him unable to control her tears as the thought of losing her first true love overwhelmed her. She would soon be married to Sid, a nice man who has long wanted to marry her, but she doesn't love him. That first drunken night with Armaan wasn't a mistake - no it was actually her long with held emotions that she had failed to recognize earlier,
----------
The next day:
Armaan sat in Dr. Chatterjee's classroom waiting for class to begin. He wondered where Riddhima was. He had texted her, but she hadn;t replied. He saw Dr. Chatterjee walk in and put his phone away. His shock knew no bounds as he saw Siddhant Modi - a man who had been long pursuing Ridhimma walk into their class. "Dr. Chatterjee, Can I pick up those notes Riddhima spoke to you about?" Dr. Chatterjee nodded. "Sure Sid, I've gotten everything from her other professors for the week as well. Give her my well wishes alright? Waise with you around I'm sure she'll be fine. Oh and class, for all you wondering who this young man is. Meet. Siddhant Modi - Riddhima's fiance."
Armaan nearly fell from his chair. Fiance? When and how did that happen. And why was she going to be gone all week? Was she okay?
