Welcome back Di.
As you said and i really hope you will not go for this long again... Many many congratulation for completing 2 yrs. I don't remember how i came to know about QSS and honestly i was a little hesitant to start reading it knowing AR not together and all but believe me today also i go back and read it again n again. You are amazing writer and Pro in expressing emotions and feelings through the characters.
the update was nice. It's lovely to see the binding between AR growing with time. finally Ridhima is getting all the happiness she deserve in every way.
The family teasing AR was lovely.
Are you planning to show about Arman's second son??
continue soon..
Part 37
When Riddhima turned around wiping her eyes with the tip of her pallu after bidding a teary farewell to her daughter and granddaughter, Armaan put his arm around her shoulder and took her inside. Seating her on the sofa next to him, he consoled her saying, "they've promised to come next Saturday. So it's only a question of 5 days." She nodded and said "I don't know why but I seem to have become very emotional these days. From the time Suja got married she's been coming over alternate weekends and I've never cried like this while seeing her off, even in those early days.
A: All these years you had arrested you emotions in a shell and shut it tight. Now you've opened those closed doors. Hence you feel vulnerable. Ageing also makes one more emotional. The relief of having come out of such a crisis, could also be another reason. So it's ok to feel sentimental. It happens to all of us sometime or the other. You didn't see my state when I first heard about your kidney failure. In front of you I had to put up a brave face. But that night I couldn't sleep a wink. I cried like a baby, kept cursing myself for having left you alone for so many years. I kept blaming myself for your illness. I was in such a state that I'd even taken my life, had it not been for the thought that I had to first get you back to health.
Riddhima looked unbelievingly at him and asked "In what way were you responsible for my diabetes? When Kamala akka called to enquire about my health at the hospital, she told me all our uncles and aunts on the paternal side, had it. As a doctor you should know that it's hereditary."
A: I agree it is hereditary, but stress aggravates it. I put you through so much stress all these years. Physical, finanacial, emotional, all sorts of stress.
R: You yourself say "forget the past, let bygones be bygones" and now who's raking the past?
Pulling her closer, Armaan nodded saying "From today the past is closed chapter and neither of us will dwell on it. We begin our life afresh from today. Just the two of us. Ok?" She looked up at him, smiled and nodded her head. He leaned forward resting his forehead on hers. After a few seconds she realized they were in the drawing room and Rajesh might enter any moment. So looking at her watch she said "It's time for the news. You wouldn't want to miss the headlines."
Laughing at her efforts to get away from him, he switched on the TV. But didn't remove his arm from around her shoulder. When she tried to push it off, looking here and there to see if Rajesh was coming, he held her tighter and smilingly said, "It's high time Rajesh got used to seeing us as real husband and wife and so also you." When she stuttered "Athaan," he just placed his finger on her lips and silenced her.
They had settled comfortably on the sofa as they watched the News. His arm had slid down from her shoulder and rested on her waist. Riddhima had also got into a comfortable position resting her head on his shoulder. Even when Rajesh brought them warm milk, Riddhima sat up but Armaan didn't move his arm. Instead, he picked up the cup with his left hand. He let Riddhima pick her cup but didn't let her move one bit away from him.
Each day slid into another. Riddhima had also come to accept Armaan's closeness. Now she didn't get startled when he hugged her or put his arm around her shoulder. At night she herself moved closer to him and put her head on his shoulder. It felt so comfy as if that's how she's been sleeping all her life. And that's how they were lying, on Friday night, when Armaan lifted her chin up to make her look at him and said "you must be very happy. Your darlings are coming tomorrow?"
R: Why are you saying that? Aren't they dear to you?
A: Of course they are, but the person most dearest to me, is here, in my arms.
Hearing him, she blushed and hiding her face in his chest said "mine too." Immediately pulling her a little away from himself and holding her face in his palms he asked "What did you say? I didn't hear clearly. Will you please repeat?" Shaking her head and smiling naughtily at him she said "Golden words are not repeated." When she tried to hide her face in his neck he pleaded "Please Riddhima."
R: Athaan please understand, we are not some teenagers to want to hear the three special words. We are mature enough to understand each other without having to make an open declaration of our feelings.
A: Whatever one's age, it feels nice to hear someone express their love for you.
R: These days youngsters say the three words without any hesitation and after that they can't live together even for three years. Our generation kept all their feelings hidden in their hearts, but never left one another till death parted them. Which is better then?
Armaan laughed at her logic and said "Who can win an argument with you Principal amma?" Then hugging her tight to him said "Let's get some sleep so that my heroine looks fresh and bright when her dear ones are here." She giggled as she cuddled up to him and fell asleep.
The next morning when both of them came back from their walk, she informed Rajesh that he was to only cut vegetables and grind masala etc. The actual cooking would be done by her. (The previous evening she had been sitting very dejected. Armaan had got worried seeing her, fearing that she might not be feeling well. Making best use of his concern she had very cleverly manipulated him to agree to let her cook the next day.)
She was busy all morning preparing her daughter's and granddaughter's favourite dishes. Rajesh was assisting her and Armaan was in the kitchen to make sure she didn't over-exert herself. But when he proved too much of an hindrance she very politlely requested him "Athaan why don't you go and sit outside? Why are you sweating it out here? I'll be done soon."
A: No I'll be here till you are here. In your excitement you might forget that you are not supposed to lift anything heavy or bend too much.
Exasperated, she just shook her head and instructing Rajesh to give the final touches to the cooking, walked out, closely followed by her athaan. As she sat on the sofa, Armaan switched on the fan and then went and got her a glass of water. Handing the glass to her, he took out his hanky and wiped the sweat from her face. Then sitting down beside her asked "Why don't you go and lie down for some time? You must be very tired?"
She was about to protest but then realized what he said was right. Once Priyam came she wouldn't let her rest even for a minute. So she had better take some rest now and keep herself fresh when they came.
It was 11 by the time Priyam and Suja arrived. (Prakash was to join them in the evening after work.) They were extremely pleased to see Riddhima her former self, up and about. After the hugging and kissing session, Suja handed a packet of fruits to Riddhima and a bundle of Mogra strands to Armaan. When he asked "Flowers? For me?" Suja irritatedly shouted "Appa!" and indicated with her eyes that he should put them in Riddhima's hair.
"Oh! Oh!" he said nodding his head and went up to his wife. Just as he was about to put the flowers, Priyam shouted "Thatha wait." He halted surprised at her command and saw her rummage through her mummy's handbag. In a few seconds she ran to him holding out a hairpin and said "Put it with this. Mummy always tells daddy to put the flowers with a pin." When Armaan raised his eyebrows and followed her instructions implicitly, she clapped her hands as if he had done some great job.
Rajesh brought some cool drinks for the guests. While Priyam regaled her amamma with all the happenings in her school, Suja chatted with her appa about her amma's health etc.
Later when they sat for lunch, the 'oohs' and 'aahs' flowed non-stop from the two girls. Tasting the 'Parupu usli' (Vegetable roasted with dal paste) and 'vathakolambu' (Sambhar without dal) Suja vouched that it could be made by none other than her amma. While Priyam had the same to say after tasting the 'payasam' (kheer). They were very happy to know that Riddhima had recovered enough to cook the lunch.
Then it was nap time. So thatha took his granddaughter on the rug in the drawing room and started telling her a story, while amma and daughter got some time to talk about Suja's health, her check-ups etc. So far her pregnancy seemed to be progressing smoothly.
For his bit Rajesh had made bhajiyas for the evening snacks. As they sat munching hot bhajiyas and sipping hot coffee, Prakash made his entry. Promptly his daughter updated him about everything that had happened since his leaving the house that morning, right upto her amamma being fit and fine to cook the lunch.
As they all sat making plans for the next day, Riddhima reminded them about her school Annual Day which they had to attend. (Her school staff had come a couple of days ago to invite the whole family to the school Annual Day on Sunday evening.)
P: Athai that's in the evening. Let's go for a small picnic in the morning.
A: Sorry, Mapillai. Maybe next weekend. Both things together will be too tiring for Riddhima.
R: this time I'm going to attend my school Annual Day like a guest.
This was the first time since the school's inception Riddhima wouldn't be involved in it.Every year she'd be in the forefront making all the arrangements and co-ordinating every aspect of it. Suja understood that her mother must be feeling very left out. So she said "Amma this is the opportunity for you to see how well you've trained your staff and whether they are capable of handling things without your assistance."
"I know they'll manage everything wonderfully" Riddhima said, her eyes shining with pride. "I'm sure they will." Armaan said putting his arm over her shoulder and squeezing it. Riddhima simply smiled back at him. Suja and Prakash looked at each other surprised to see Riddhima not perturbed by the act of intimacy. Normally she'd have blushed and pushed his hand away. They nodded and smiled at each other, happy for her. "She has at long last reached where she belonged," Suja thought to herself.
Suja and Priyam took all the pains to deck up Riddhima as best as they could, paying no heed to her protests. She looked like a bride in the beautiful new Kancheepuram silk saree which Armaan had bought for her for her when they had all gone for a shopping spree in Chennai, after her surgery. The happiness glowing on her face, made her look years younger. Armaan too matched her evenly in his newly acquired chudidaar and sherwani, which Suja had insisted on gifting him during that shopping.
As Riddhima had already mentioned about the function on the phone, they all had come prepared for it. Only Suja was grumpy that even the recently stitched blouse seemed to have become tighter now. But her amma brought back the smile on her face by opening one of the side stitches and making it fit her. Prakash was dressed like his father-in-law in chudidaar kurta and Priyam in a pretty salwar suit with a prettier dupatta.
The happy family reached the school grounds, at the right time, accompanied by Balu uncle, Rajesh and Kuppu too. Riddhima was overwhelmed when her entire staff met them at the gate and a senior teacher performed the traditional aarti for her and Armaan. (Usually Riddhima followed this tradition to welcome the chief guest.) Then each of them came forward and hugged her saying "Welcome maam" and bowing to Armaan "Welcome Sir". Riddhima also hugged each of her staff and thanked them for running the school so well in her absence.
Then as they walked towards their seats in the front row, students standing on either side, showered flower petals on her. Riddhima literally had tears flowing down her cheek. She felt like a queen. She touched each child as she passed, either patting their head or their cheek.
The entire first row was reserved for the family, with two throne-like chairs placed at the centre of the row for Riddhima and Armaan. Armaan felt embarrassed and asked the acting principal, "She deserves it, why me?" "You are the guest of honour for this evening sir," she replied. As soon as they sat down on that chair Priyam squeezed herself next to her grandpa on his chair, as she also wanted to sit on the special chair. When Suja began rebuking her, Armaan gestured that it was ok. Nevertheless he picked the girl up and put her on the other side so that she didn't come between him and Riddhima, as a child sitting between a couple is considered ill-omen.
