Part 8
Soon everything got sort out and Tanya and Kripa were free from the clutches of Prithvi. Kripa went back to live with Tanya in her apartment but she didn't want to become a burden on Tanya. So she took started looking for job. She faced many difficulties because of her education but gradually due to her hard work and mass interest in designing she got a job as sales assistant under a widow lady who pregnant with a child. Everyday she used to cook for Angad, Tanya and herself. It was like Teddy the housekeeper in Angad's house was for just cleaning and taking care of the house. He never got the chance to cook anything for Angad because all days he was found sharing his meals with Kripa and Tanya.
Soon the marriage date fixed for Tanya's wedding came and only Kripa and Angad were there from her side but they left no stone unturned to make it a dream wedding for her. Tanya and Josh decided to settle in Miami after marriage where Josh had his main office headquarters. So Tanya transferred the apartment in name of Kripa. Now life was set for Tanya and Kripa.
Angad and Kripa became inseparable best friends. Everyday Angad used to skip his office in lunchtime to have lunch with Kripa. Together after picking Kripa from her store they used to go to a nearby beach and used to have lunch made by Kripa. They were best of friends. Angad used to return to his home to just sleep. Life was really good for of them. But life is known for its up and down. After so many blissful days problem knocked first at Kripa's door.
One as she was working in store she got a phone call from one of her neighbor to reach her apartment as quickly as possible. That person never ever mention what the real problem was but just hung up. Out of habbit Kripa called Angad and asked him to meet her there.
When they reached there a fire engine sped past, then another. As they turned the corner an ambulance joined the company of flashing lights several blocks down the street.
"I wonder what happened," Kripa said as another police cruiser shot past.
Angad craned his neck to see over the crowds gathering on the sidewalk. Those emergency vehicles were
stopped awfully close to … no, it couldn't be. "Kripa, that's not—"
She had already let go of his hand and was shoving her way through the ocean of bodies clogging the
side-walk. Against a backdrop of blackness, billows of gray smoke hung ominously in the moonlit sky.
Right over Kripa's building.
*
It could be worse.
That seemed to be the consensus as Kripa leaned on the back of the police cruiser, watching the
firemen pack up their gear. She supposed that was pretty easy to say when you hadn't just lost
everything you owned.
"Miss Sharma ?"
Kripa looked up to see Annie, Mr.Malhotra's daughter. They'd taken her father away by ambulance
shortly after Kripa and Angad had arrived to find the upper half of the building consumed by flames and
billowing smoke.
Her face was streaked with tears. "Miss Sharma , I'm so very sorry for what's happened."
"Is your father okay?"
She nodded, wiping her cheeks. "He's got a few second-degree burns and suffered from mild smoke
inhalation."
"I'm glad he'll be all right." Kripa rubbed her eyes with her thumb and forefinger. They burned from
sheer exhaustion and the acrid smoke still hanging in the air. All she wanted to do was crawl into bed and
sleep, but she didn't have a bed to crawl into anymore. She didn't even have clean clothes to change into,
or a toothbrush. She had nothing.
"This is all my fault," Annie hiccuped, fresh tears springing from her eyes. "I knew he wasn't well, but he
wanted to be independent. I couldn't bear putting him in a home. He was so happy here."
"Did he say why he did it?" Kripa looked over at Julia (her helper at the shop) and Angad on the sidewalk speaking to one of the police officers. Mr.Malhotra had set the building on fire because he thought Abhay's(a resident of the building) fiance was an alien. How absolutely perfect. She would have laughed, but she didn't have the energy left. She didn't even have the energy to cry.
"I'm so sorry," Annie said again. "All of your things, your beautiful appartment—"
"They're just things," she assured her. "They can be replaced. People can't. All that matters is everyone
is okay. You should go and be with your dad. He needs you."
Annie reluctantly left and Kripa watched her walk away, feeling only pity. Mr.Malhotra wasn't
malicious and she truly believed he never meant to harm anyone. He'd been a good, if not entertaining
tenant for six years. Now Annie would have no choice but to put him in a nursing home, or possibly
institutionalize him.
Angad sat next to her on the trunk, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. They both smelled like
barbecued carpet and their clothes were damp and dirty. "You holding up okay?"
No, she wasn't okay. She was exhausted and depressed and homeless. She nodded anyway. "Don't you
have to go back to your office?"
"I called Louis and explained the situation. I'm not going anywhere." The arm around her tightened. Now
came the bad news.
"A building inspector will be out in the morning. When he says it's safe, we can go in and pick up
whatever wasn't ruined. Julia called your insurance company and they're sending an adjuster out when
they get the all clear."
"Did the firemen say how bad it is?"
"Mr.Malhotra's place, the hallway and everything below are going to have to be gutted. Most of the
fire was contained to that part of the building. Your living room is singed, but it was superficial. Most of
the damage is going to be from smoke and water."
She stifled a yawn and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Now that all of the emergency vehicles were
pulling away, the crowds on the sidewalks had thinned to a few stragglers. She was beginning to feel less
like a circus sideshow.
Julia joined them in the street.
"Is she okay?" Julia asked Angad.
"She's fine," Kripa answered for him. "She's just exhausted."
"Come home with me," Julia said. "You can stay with me."
Before Kripa could accept or refuse her offer, Angad stood, pulling her with him. "She's
staying with me."
I am?she almost said. She didn't remember him asking. Although, she couldn't imagine another place she
would rather stay, where she would feel more comfortable, and less like a charity case.
"There's no point in hanging around here anymore," he said. "Let's go home."
Home? She didn't have a home. But she didn't bother to point that out.
"I'll help you pack up your stuff," Julia promised. "Call me."
Kripa thanked her and let Angad lead her to his car in the public parking lot two blocks away. He
unlocked the door for her, helped her in and fastened her seat belt. She wasn't much in the mood for
conversation, so she sat quietly as he drove to his place. He parked in the garage, helped her out of the car and led her inside.
He'd need a really long one tonight.
Next day she, Angad and Julia together went to Kripa's apartment to see what has been left fo her so called home and her belongings. Everything was covered in black. People from insurance company came and their survey. After that they told Kripa that will try to compensate for as much as possible but for the time being she has to shift to a hotel and expenses will be covered by them. Before she could say anything an gad interfered and said that a hotel room will not be needed as she will be staying with him until and unless her apartment is ready. Before Kripa could say anything to angad or either to insurance people they were hurrying out to leave the apartment in order to escape from the suffocating environment around.
Kripa faced Angad and said ' Angad its really nice of you to help me like this but I cant really stay in your house like that until my home is ready. The insurance will pay for a hotel."
"Forget it. I won't let you spend months in a hotel. It sucks. And no more arguments." Kripa stared up into the gaping hole in the ceiling of the stockroom, where Mr.Malhotra's floor used to be. She couldn't believe this was happening to her—that everything she'd worked so hard for stood in ruins. Temporarily, she reminded herself. It was fixable. Her life would be back on track. It would just take time.
Yellow caution tape blocked off half of the apartment and the door to Mr.Malhotra's apartment
upstairs. Her own apartment, singed as it was, was still accessible. Not that much of it was worth saving.
They'd stopped the fire before it reached the kitchen, but the excessive heat had melted anything made of
plastic, and the ceiling was black with soot. Even the clothes tucked away in her closet, far from the
reaches of the flames, reeked with the stench of stale smoke. She, Angad and Julia had packed her clothes
in black trash bags and Julia had hauled them to a dry cleaner that specialized in removing the smoke
smell from fabric.
Kripa didn't have any more option but go and live with Angad in his house.
