Part 132

Ani's crankiness continued through the weekend putting Riddhima in a dilemma. Was she doing the right thing in starting her job? Should she wait till Ani was a little older?

On Saturday evening, they had gone to the park hoping to cheer up Ani. But surprisingly he didn't want to sit on the swing or play ball with the kids. Riddhima looked worriedly at Armaan and said "Armaan, he's not ok. Usually he loves to sit on the swing." Armaan just cuddled him and nodded in assent.

Even after they went home he was cranky and was not willing to eat anything or even have milk. Armaan suggested that they feed him some icecream. Since that was his favourite, he was sure he wouldn't refuse that. But Riddhima was worried as they were already giving him so much of chilled things, he shouldn't catch cold. But surprisingly he didn't even want to have icecream. Finally Riddhima gave a dose of the painkiller and he fell asleep with the chilled soother in his mouth.

At dinner, Armaan noticed that Riddhima was just playing with her food. He knew she was worried about Ani. When he took a morsel to her mouth, she looked at him, her eyes brimming with tears and said "Khane ka mann nahi kar raha hai." "If you starve, how are you going to feed Ani if he wakes up and cries in the middle of the night?" He compulsorily fed her a few morsels. Akshat also came and sat on her lap and started feeding her, saying "mama aap fikar mat karo. Kal subah dekhna, Ani bilkul theek ho jayega." She hugged him and then there was no stopping her tears. But thinking that Akshat would get upset with her tears, she came out of the hug and giving him a watery smile and said "haan tum shayad theek keh rahey ho."

After dinner they sat talking about Akshat's school activities, his projects etc. After reading his diary, both of them had started putting in special efforts to ensure that he did not feel neglected. After sometime Armaan said "Chalo beta, it's bedtime. I'll read a story to you." He took him to his room, made him brush his teeth and change. When Armaan tucked him in bed and picked up his favourite story book he said, "Nahi dad aaj rehne do, mujhe bahut neend aa rahi hai," knowing very well that right now, his mama needed his dad.

When Armaan went to his room, Riddhima was sitting on the bed with the night lamp switch in her hand. She was switching the light, on and off. He went and sat beside her and taking her into a hug said "kya baat hai sweetheart, itni tensed kyon ho? Children tend to fall ill. Come on doctor, it's only teething problem, nothing serious." He tried to lighten the mood but her next question was most unexpected.

R: Armaan, should I wait till he's a little older before I start working?

A: Riddhima, he's just teething and Dr. Shaila said na, he would be ok soon. You were so excited about starting work. Why are rethinking now?

R: Ya, but,

Seeing her hesitate he reminded her, "After you delivered Akshat, you went back to work in just six months, Riddhima. Ani is nine months now."

R: Armaan, but Abhi's mother was there to take care of him, she just doted on him.

A: You think akka won't take care of Ani or she doesn't dote on him?

R: Nahi Armaan, aisi baat nahi hai,

A: phir kaisi baat hai?

R: Armaan, then I had to get back to work to support myself and my child. At the back of my mind, I always had the fear that the truth may come out someday, and I'll have to fend for myself. So I had to find work as soon as possible. Now that's not the case. Now I have a rich husband to take care of all my needs. So I can devote all the time I want, to my family.

He was very happy to see her back in mood but all the same said "Riddhima family should be one's strength, not weakness. It should encourage you to move forward and not become a roadblock. Kids are bound to fall ill. So are you going to give up your career and stay at home permanently? Don't you owe something to the society, which has contributed in some way to your becoming a doctor? Think of all the patients whose suffering you will alleviate. All of us have multiple duties to perform. We should try to strike the right balance between everything. Moreover it's just few hours in the morning and few in the evening. I'll also be with the kids in the evening. Come on cheer up, and don't worry. Let me see that beautiful smile on your face.

She did feel better with his talk and smiled at him. "I'm so out of touch with the latest medicines etc., I hope I don't make any gudbud," she said out of the blue.

A: Riddhima, I can very well understand that you have not been practicing for nearly two years, so it may not be easy starting again. Trust me you are an excellent doctor, who cares a lot about her patients, so you won't go wrong. Main hoon na tumhare saath. Everything will work out perfectly. Don't worry.

She hugged him and kissing him said "agar tum kehte ho, to sab kuch theek hi hoga." Then walking over to Ani's cot, she picked him up and tried to wake him up. He didn't wake up but when she put him to her breast, he started feeding. She was happy that he did so and went to bed with a smile on her face, after putting him in his cot. Armaan was happy to see her relaxed and glad that she was out of her dilemma.

The next morning Akshat's prediction came true. Ani woke up with a smile on his face and a small white line could be seen above his toothless gum. He had cut his first tooth. But when everyone started pulling his chin to view it, he started getting irritated. Thanks to Ani's smile everyone was in a happy mood on Sunday.

Monday morning Riddhima was up at 5.30. She had her bath even before Ani could wake up. Armaan woke up hearing the water running and was surprised to see her coming out of the bathroom. "Why did you bathe so early? You have to go only at 8.30 na?" he enquired. "No afterwards I won't have time. Maine morning poora schedule plan kar liya hai," was her reply. He pulled her on the bed asking "achcha? So according to your schedule what time will you give me my good morning kiss?" he teased her. She also spoke in the same tone saying "Sorry Dr. Mallik there's no time in my schedule for that. You now have a working wife, so you have to forego certain luxuries."

A: First of all, morning kiss is not a luxury for me, it is a necessity. I can't move out of bed without getting that. Secondly I'm prepared to forego anything else, but not that.

With that he moved on top of her and when she said "Armaan chodo mujhe, der ho jayegi." He said "No, not until you give me what I want." She knew when he was so determined, there was no escape. Besides it would be the perfect start to her new day. So she relented and surrendered to him. Coming out of the kiss he said "Best of luck sweetheart, for the new beginning you are about to make today." She kissed him once again and said "It wouldn't be possible without your support." "You know I'll always stand by you." Was his reply.

Then he got up and went for his bath. When he came out he saw that she was talking to Ani as she fed him. "..Tum athai ko pareshaan nahi karna. Mama jaldi aa jayegi. Ok?" He thought he would go and take his clothes to save her time. But just as he opened the closet she called out, "Armaan tumhare kapde maine yahan rakhi hai."

A: Riddhima, yeh sab kaam main khud hi kar sakta hoon.

R: Nahi yeh mera haq hai aur main hi tumhare kapde roz nikaaloongi.

A: Aur iske liye subah saade paanch baje uthogi?

R: Maine kaha na maine schedule bana liya hai.

"Theek hai theek hai, give him to me. I'll wash and change him, before I dress up. You go get Akshat ready for school." He said taking Ani from her.

After breakfast when Riddhima saw Armaan go in, she followed him thinking he must have gone to pick the car keys and his wallet. She wanted to give him a goodbye kiss and once again get his best wishes. But she heard him talking on his cell.

A: Yes, Rajan tell me

Rajan:--------------------

A: I'd informed Dr. Mohan that I'll be coming late.

Rajan:---------------------

A: Oh I see. Ok please ask them to wait.

Rajan:---------------------

A: No Rajan, it's Riddhima's first day at the clinic. As it is she's nervous, I have to drop her. I'll surely be there by nine. Please just manage till then.

Rajan:----------------------

A: Bye, thanks a lot Rajan.

When he turned around he saw her staring at him. "Kya hospital mein koi emergency hai? Aur tumne jaane se mana kar diya?" she asked.

A: Nahi kuch doctors aaye hai Germany se. Mujse milna chahte hain.

R: To tum gaye kyon nahi? Armaan I'll take the other car. You need not drop me. You go.

A: Nahi Riddhima, aaj main tumhe drop karke hi jaoonga. Today is a very important day for you and I'm not leaving you alone. They haven't taken prior appointment with me. So they'll have to wait.

Finally, he did what he wanted to. After seeing off Akshat to school, Riddhima bid a teary farewell to Ani. Then she left with Armaan, after taking Kaka's and akka's blessings. Kaka blessed her saying, "Khush raho bahu, khoob tarakki karo." While akka said "Armaan thanmbi se badi doctor ban jaana."

When they reached the clinic, the sweeper was cleaning the place. Jyoti had not come as yet.

R: Armaan you go it's getting late. Those doctors are waiting for you.

Without paying any heed to her he held her by the hand and took her inside. He made her sit on the doctor's chair and took out a small box from his pocket and gave it to her saying "This is for your new beginning". Riddhima least expected this. She eagerly opened the packet and in it were two tiny statues of Lord Ganesh. One writing something and another in a bath tub. She had never seen Ganpathis before. They looked so cute, she couldn't take her eyes off them.

When she unpacked them and place them on the table he pointed to the writing one and said "this one's Akshat and the one in the bath tub is Ani."

Riddhima was amazed seeing them. She immediately hugged him saying "Thank you so much Armaan. It means the world to me. But what about yourself?"

Armaan cheekily answered I thought of getting one with tattoo marks like me, but then I thought you wouldn't have liked your patients admiring that one, so I didn't." She understood that he was pulling her leg, so she hit him on his arm.

He was very happy to see her reaction, exactly what he expected. He kissed her forehead and said "All the best, have a wonderful morning. And I'll be here to pick you at twelve." She nodded and said "You too have a nice morning" and hugged him once again. Jyoti entered just then and coughed aloud to draw their attention. Both of them moved apart hearing her. As usual Armaan saved the situation saying "good morning Dr. Jyoti. I was just leaving. Bye." And left waving out to them.

Part 138

"Armaan chodo, sab hamara intezaar karte honge" she said pulling out of his arms. She moved a few steps forward and then came back and hugged him but taking care that her makeup didn't rub on his shirt. "Thank you Mr. Mallik, for making me look so beautiful" she said. He hugged her back saying "You are welcome Mrs. Mallik. Banda aapke sewa mein hameesha hazir hai."

Kaka and akka complimented the couple as they walked out and so did Akshat. "Mama aap bahut khoobsurat lag rahi ho.Ab aap ekdum theek lag rahi ho. Bilkul bimaar nahi lag rahi. Aur Dad aap bhi bahut smart aur handsome lag rahen hai. After all it's your birthday!" Both of them were wide eyed hearing him. Then he brought out a gift wrapped packet and handing it to his dad said, "Sorry, aaj subah jaldi mein main aapko yeh dena reh gaya."

When Armaan opened the packet he let out a gasp. "Mmm they smell wonderful and so pretty too. Kahan se kharida?" he asked and Akshat's eyes shone bright. Riddhima barged in saying, "yeh isne apne haathon se banaya hai? Can you believe it?" Armaan could utter just one word "What?" Akka butted in and explained how she had helped him melt and pour the wax, while everything else was done by him.

Armaan took his son into a tight hug saying "Tumhe yeh sab karne ki kya zaroorat thi beta? Main jaanta hoon ke tum mujse bahut pyaar karte ho.Agar yeh banate banate tumey lag jaata to? Meri to jaan hi nikal jaati na? Please aayinda aise kuch mat karna. Mujhe bus dher saara kisses dena." He kissed the little hands which had created these things of beauty. Then packing up the candles again he said "I'll treasure them as long as I live." By then all of them had tears in their eyes.

Just then the little one started calling out dadada. Armaan went and picked him up and kissed him fondly and the little one kissed him back. "He's also wishing you a happy birthday" Riddhima said. "My life will always be happy, as long you all are with me," replied Armaan and they all got into a hug, including Akka and Kaka.

Soon the guests started arriving. Armaan had carried Riddhima to the terrace and seated her in a comfortable chair. He had put Akshat on duty to see that she didn't budge from there. Rajan and Sheena brought a huge Dutch Truffle cake on behalf of all the MSHC staff. They had informed Riddhima about it, the day she had been to MSHC to invite them. Akka picked up the little one before he could lay his hands on the cake. But he was screaming his lungs out as he wanted to get hold of it.

The cake was put on the table, the candles lit and Armaan was asked to make a wish and blow the candles and finally the cake was cut. As soon as Armaan picked a piece in his hand, Akshat indicated with his eyes that his mama should be fed first. Then it was him, Ani, Akka and kaka. All of them picked up a bit and not only fed Armaan but also decorated his face with it. After a lot of cheering, wishing and back slapping, Armaan went to wash his face.

The party games that she had planned were real fun. Everyone enjoyed them and the prices were superb too. Gift vouchers of the best stores in Munnar. Then they began playing housie. Akshat was picking the numbers and Riddhima was calling them out and the birthday boy was also asked to play along with the guests.

Suddenly the rain played spoilsport. Thankfully, Armaan had asked the decorators to put a double tarpaulin on the top, to cover the open space. But people standing at the edges had to move in as the rain water was coming in from the sides. So people started shuffling and Armaan moved to help them bring their chairs forward, away from the terrace parapet.

When all of them had settled, the housie began again. Only the final price of full house remained. Riddhima went on calling out the numbers, glancing at Armaan from time to time. Suddenly, Sheena stood up claiming the full house. Riddhima and Akshat looked surprised at each other with their mouths open. Everyone around them were clapping. The full house price was a spectacular one they had been told. So when Sheena went to collect it Riddhima said she would get her prize after dinner.

Akshat went to Armaan and asked for his housie ticket. When Armaan handed it to him he glanced at the numbers and said, "Yeh to aapka nahi hai." Armaan looked at him puzzled and said "yehi to hai mera ticket."

Ak: Nahi dad, aapke numbers yeh nahi the.

A: Oh! Maine Rajan ko mera ticket pakde ne ke liye kaha tha, to shayad tab exchange ho gaya. Anyways woh chodo, khane chalo.

Akshat went to his mama and told her what his dad had told him. Both of them looked sadly at each other.

Ak: Lekin woh ticket Sheena aunty ke paas kaise aaya?

R: Jaise bhi aaya ho, lekin humey ab Sheena ko prize dena hoga.

Ak: Ab kya karein?

R: No problem, hum Sheena ko ek packet mein cash de denge.

She asked him to go downstairs to her cupboard, open it and take the cash. Put it in an envelope, seal it and bring it to her. She told him exactly where her cupboard key, cash, envelope and glue were.

By then all of the guests had moved towards the buffet table on the request of the birthday boy. Riddhima was tired and the weather was getting to be chilly. Armaan saw her shiver. He went down and got her a shawl. As came from behind and wrapped the shawl around her shoulder, she held his arms and putting her head on it said "these arms are enough to keep me warm, I don't need a shawl. "Keep the shawl for the time being as these are not free" he said indicating his arms. He then squeezed her in his arms and pecked her cheek. It was warm. He touched her forehead to check. Her temperature was once again beginning to rise.

He went and got her a bowl of soup. When she tried drinking it, her hand started shivering. Armaan took the spoon from her hand and started feeding her. At once he heard his younger son scream "dadada". Akka had made him sit on a chair and was feeding him his food. He was bending down from the chair and was about to fall, when Armaan caught him with one hand. "kya kar rahe ho Ani?" he questioned him when he clung to his arm. So he pulled him on to his lap. When akka brought the spoon to his mouth he shook his head saying "dada" meaning he wanted his dad to feed him.

Both his parents smiled seeing his jealousy. Armaan handed the soup bowl to akka and putting him on his lap, fed him his food and then he fed Riddhima, though she said "Armaan tum usey khilao, main pee loongi" Next the little one wanted the soup and not his food. But Riddhima stopped Armaan from feeding him the soup as he might catch her infection. So Armaan said "Theek hai, khana nahi khana hai na, to athai ke paas jao." Immediately he opened his mouth for the food. After a few morsels he got bored and started spitting it out. "Ok mat khao, mama first finish kar legi. Tum last reh jaoge" his dad said. In a few minutes his bowl was wiped clean and he was peeping into the soup bowl to see if his mama had finished before him. All three of them started laughing at his antics.

Akshat came back with the packet in his hand. "What is that?" asked Armaan.

"Sheena ka prize" said Riddhima taking it from him.

A: Chalo sab khane chalte hain.

R: Armaan mujhe khane ka bilkul mann nahi hai. Main jaakar soti hoon. Ani ko do main usey bhi sula doongi. Tum sab kha lo.

"Nahi Riddhima tumhe kuch to khana hoga. Pehle se bahut weakness hai tumhe." Said Armaan handing over Ani to akka. He took Akshat also along and brought two plates. He handed over one plate to Akshat after he had found a chair to sit on. He sat next to Riddhima, and started feeding her rice and dal. She in turn tore a piece of roti and fed it to him, along with some paneer sabzi.

He smiled at her as he opened his mouth for the food. All the guests eyed the lovey-dovey couple with envy. After a few morsels Riddhima said "Bus Armaan. I'll vomit if I have another bite." He didn't force her after that. But she continued to feed though he said he would finish his meal himself. After they finished their dinner, the guests started moving out. Riddhima went to Sheena and handed her the envelope saying "Your prize." Then the Malliks too decided to retire for the day.

Armaan first gave Riddhima her medicine. Then went to settle the caterer's bill etc.

Ak: mama hamara plan to chaupat ho gaya. Isbaar aap ne jo bhi plans banaye, sab flop ho gaye.

R: Flop kahan hui. Main bimaar pad gayi, lekin party to achchi rahi. Aur aaj hamara plan fail hua to kya? Saturday hum usey surprise trip par le jaayenge. All the more better.

They couldn't tell anyone that they had noted the numbers on Armaan's ticket and planned to rig the game to give Armaan the tickets for the cruise as the prize for 'full house'. They high fived each other and Akshat went to his room. Akka had put Ani to sleep in his cot. Riddhima also changed and got into bed. It quite sometime before Armaan came back. Seeing her already in bed he also changed and lay down beside her. "Itni der kahan laga di?" she asked cuddling up to him. "Thank you so much for the wonderful party" he said, kissing her.

"It was nothing compared to last year's" she lamented."That's ok. If it's the same every year it will become boring," he consoled her. Observing his face closely she for his reaction, she said "I didn't even get you a gift this year" "I alwas tell you na, you are God's greatest gift to me and you've gifted me two wonderful kids. I don't want anything else Riddhima," he said hugging her tight. Then he said "but you still have slight fever. You've tired yourself enough for today, get some sleep now."

In the middle of the night Riddhima's temperature shot up and she was literalluy shivering. Feeling her trembling, Armaan woke up. He couldn't give her more medication, so started putting cold pads on her forehead. After an hour or so the temperature came down and he went to sleep.

The next morning Armaan had to go to the hospital and Akshat to school. Riddhima was still asleep and Armaan decided he wouldn't let her go to the clinic today. She needed the rest. But when Riddhima woke up at 8 o'clock, she was very much upset. But Armaan was firm that he wasn't going to allow her to go, till she had normal temperature for a whole day. With kaka and akka to side him Riddhima had no say in the matter.

Though she was upset initially, she slept most of the day and by evening she was feeling much better. She called up the assistant to ask if there was any problem at the clinic. She told her not to worry and to get well soon. She quickly packed the clothes for all of them for two days and hid the cases in Akshat's room, before Armaan could come home.

Saturday dawned a bright and sunny day. Armaan dropped her to clinic himself, as he had an off. He could understand her concern for the patients. When he went to pick her back at 12 noon, he asked Kaka if he would like to come for his shopping, but kaka said he'd already done it on Friday. Riddhima had informed the assistant that she wouldn't be coming in the evening.

When they came home, Shafi's van was waiting for them at the gate. Kaka and Akshat had already loaded the luggage. Armaan was surprised to see him but before he could park his car in the garage and enquire anything, Riddhima asked all of them to get into the van, while kaka locked up the house and garage. Armaan was puzzled. As the van moved Akka gave them both a packet of "pulisadam" (Tamarind rice) and some chips. The others had all had their lunch and the little was already asleep.

A: At least tell me where we are going.

"You'll know shortly" said Riddhima as she covered herself with a shawl and snuggled against him to catch a nap. Slowly all of them dozed off.

Part 140

Armaan kissed her and said "I see the wonderful day ahead of me and my wonderful life beside me, when I wake up to this angelic face." She kissed him back saying "flatterer". "No Riddhima, I really mean it." He said on a more serious note, "You know some people look at the picture of some God or Goddess, or their own palms, immediately on waking up, so that their day goes well. Likewise whenever I spend a few minutes watching your sleeping face, my day goes well."

R: ok ok thanks for the lovely compliment. Let's begin our day. We have a lot to be done today.

A: I thought this trip was to relax ourselves.

R: Of course it is. But this house boat will take us for the backwater ride covering bird sanctuary along with the heritage village of Kerala and sweet water lake. So we have to just laze around and watch all that with a pair of binoculars.

She went to freshen up, while he went to attend to the kids. Both of them were on the deck with akka and kaka. Armaan was surprised to see them drinking milk without any fuss. Akshat was always fussy about drinking milk, but of late Ani also drank very little of it. He was more interested in eating solids. When Armaan raised his eyebrows and enquired silently to akka what the miracle was about, she indicated the surroundings with her head. Armaan smiled and nodded. Then he went towards the kitchen to fetch coffee for himself and at the same time ordered breakfast for all of them.

When it started getting hotter they moved indoors but Ani was yelling and screaming. Armaan made him sit near a closed window so that he could still see everything outside and he was happy. The whole passed off so pleasantly that when they reached Kumarkom in the evening, they didn't feel like disembarking. Shafi was waiting for them there. After another three hours drive they were back home.

Immediately all of them got busy preparing for the next day, as it was Monday. That night when AR lay on their bed Armaan said "I must admit this has been a really unique gift. It was totally restful. The mild swaying of the boat was so soothing. Thank you so much for such a thoughtful gift Dr. Mallik." "You are welcome Dr. Mallik," she retorted. (from the time she had started working in the clinic he had started calling her Dr. Mallik instead of Mrs. Mallik.)

Flashback ends

R: Thankfully tomorrow is a holiday. Every bone in my body is aching.

A: But the party was a super hit. The kids really enjoyed a lot.

R: The amount of time you and Kunjmon spent in decorating, you must be dead tired na?

A: But when everyone appreciated all that, it felt worthwhile. Kunjmon is a brilliant boy. He put his computer animation course to full use. Let's get some sleep. Atul Anjie have to leave in the morning.

R: Thankfully they have an afternoon flight so we don't have to wake up early.

Atul, Anjie and Anshul were leaving the following day, but the Guptas would stay for a few days more.

All of them woke up late and were gathered at the breakfast table when Anshul said "Armaan uncle, the safari theme was fantastic."

Atul: Awesome decoration. Main soch bhi nahin sakta ke koi itna badiya forest scene ghar may bana sakta hai. You are just too good Armaan.

An: Mom, dad, mujhe bhi mere birthday ke liye aise he theme party chahiye."

Anjie: Atul why did you have to open your big mouth?

Atul: I was only praising Armaan's efforts.

An: Armaan, dekha you've got us into trouble now. But tell me one thing, you've spent so much time, money and efforts for a few hours party? Issey achcha hota, koi five star hotel mein hi de dete. Like we always do. Hai na Atul?

Atul simply nodded his head. Riddhima noticed Armaan's face fall. She immediately said "That was uncalled for Di. What Armaan does for his kids is his lookout and nobody elses. If you can't do it for your kid why blame him?"

Anjie hadn't expected her sister to protest. So to pacify her she "Come on Riddhima, I'm just fooling Even Armaan knows that. Ya it's fine that he wants to do all this for his kids, but Ani is too small to even appreciate it. Such wasted efforts na?"

Padma didn't like to see her daughters quarrel so she intervened saying "Chodo yeh sab. Party bahut badiya thi. We all enjoyed it thoroughly. That's all that matters. Anjie don't you want to finish your packing?" Anjie rushed off saying "Oh yes we have to leave soon. Atul come and give me a hand." In the meantime Akshat and Anshul were having a chat.

AK: Lekin yeh uska first birthday tha isliye kiya tha. Har birthday ko nahi karte. Mere seventh birthday mein bhi, cake laye, sabhi friends ko bulaya aur party ki. Lekin aisey decorations nahi kiye. Hum abhi big boys ho gaye na?

An: Lekin mere to first birthday mein bhi aisey decoration nahi ki thi. Wahan sirf balloons, streamers aisey decorations the. Tumhare first birthday mein?

Ak: Actually mere first birthday sirf 2-3 photos hai. Jyaada nahi hai. Aur haan unmein bhi balloons aur streamers hi dikhtey hai.

After Anjie and Atul rushed off, the adults were eating silently. So the childrens' conversation was heard clearly. Hearing Akshat's words, Riddhima's eyes welled up with tears. She remebered the situation. Abhi had been in the middle east, his mother was still mourning the death of her husband and Riddhima was sad because her son was one year old and still hadn't met his father. And worse still was the fact that his biological father was unaware of even his existence.

But she had decided that she would definitely have some sort of celebration for her kid, as his first birthday wouldn't come again. He was the only joy in her life then. And she wanted to celebrate the day that the bundle of joy came into her life.

So she had decorated the house with a few balloons and streamers and invited a few of the neighbourhood children in the afternoon, as she couldn't get an off from the clinic in the evening. She had brought a cake and a little snacks for them. They had been no one to click the photo when she had held his hand and cut the cake. So after cutting the cake, she had clicked his photos with the children holding him.

She couldn't control her tears realizing the stark contrast, in the celebrations of the first birthdays, of both her sons. She flicked the tears that threatened to flow down. Armaan could understand her state, so held her hand comfortingly. Even Shashank and Padma were moved hearing the child's words. They regretted having punished the little boy, by depriving him of his grandparents' love, for no fault of his.

Suddenly, Armaan got up from his seat and made a call. All the others also dispersed from the dining table having finished their breakfast. The Joshis were all set to leave. Even Shafi had come with his van, but Armaan was at the gate waiting for someone. They all asked Riddhima what it was about, but she was also unaware of it.

Just then Armaan walked in with box and asked Anshul to come to the forest part of the hall. There he placed the cake on the table and put a 5 no. candle on it. He put on a hat on Anshul's head and handing him a knife asked him to cut the cake along with his parents. And he clicked his photograph. He then repeated the same with Akshat. When everybody asked him why he was doing all this. He replied, "Just to have them feel that they also celebrated their birthday with a safari jungle theme." He promised to send a copy of the photo to Anshul.

Shashank and Padma were playing hide and seek with the kids. Akshat would hide and Ani would search for him and nanu-nani would tell him with signs where to look. When Akshat complained about their cheating, they said "woh tumse chota hai na?" But when Akshat asked "lekin woh to hamesha mujse chota hi rahega na? Kabhi mujse bada to nahi hoga. To kya hamesha cheating hi karega?" They had no reply to his question.

While all this was going on in the hall, the Mallik couple was discussing something in their room. After the Joshis left, Riddhima had gone to tidy up her room. From her mood, Armaan could gauge that something was worrying her. So her quietly followed her in and slowly shut the room. She was standing in front of the open closet, hanging some clothes. He hugged her from behind and placing his chin on her shoulder asked, "What's the matter sweetheart?" She turned around after hanging the clothes, but didn't answer him. Instead she started fidgeting with his shirt buttons.

"What's troubling you Riddhima?" he asked. She looked up at him at that question and asked "how do you know something is troubling me?" He put his finger under chin, and looking into her eyes and said "firstly, I can read it on your face and in your eyes. And secondly this," he said catching hold of her fingers on his shirt front. "Whenever you play with my shirt buttons, I know there's something on your mind."

R: Armaan, I think we shouldn't have planned such a grand celebration for Ani's birthday. We've been unjust to Akshat. That child had one of the most ugliest birthday celebrations anyone could imagine. Once again tears flowed down her cheeks as she tried telling Armaan all about it. "ssh ssh! He silenced her. I know all that Riddhima, I've read it in your diary. But maybe you are right. It didn't strike us at all to think from Akshat's point of view."

R: if it hadn't been for Anshul and their talk, we would never have realized it.

A: but at the sametime should we refrain from doing anything good for Ani, just because Akshat didn't enjoy it? Each child comes with his own destiny. He gets what he's destined to.

R: you may be correct but how do we explain it to Akshat. As it is he's so insecure and I feel we've just added to it.

A: What's done is done. Don't worry I'll explain it to him properly.

With that both of them went to find the kids and that's when they heard Akshat's comment about Ani always being smaller than him. Riddhima at once went and hugged her first born saying "Tum bilkul sahi keh rahe ho. Cheating in any form and for any reason whatsoever, is wrong. Ani has to search him out again." So again they started with the game.

Armaan held Ani between his legs and closed his eyes, while Akshat and hid himself. Then Armaan released Ani's eyes saying "Jao anna ko dhoondo." When he looked towards his grandparents for guidance Riddhima sternly said "koi kuch nahi bataega. Tum khud hi dhoondo." Without making any effort for searching his anna, he went and picked Akshat's pencil box. Riddhima let him have it as he hadn't opened it, but Akshat was watching him from his hiding place and his heart jumped into his mouth. He would surely harm it, he felt. But since he was hiding he was helpless.

When Ani started banging the box, Riddhima went to snatch it from him, but he shook his head saying "anna" and hid it under himself. Now Akshat couldn't bear it anymore. He came out of the hiding place shouting "mera pencil box." Ani handed it to him like a good boy. And then pointing to Akshat said "anna" and started clapping his hands. Then it struck all of them that it had been his trick to bring Akshat out of his hiding place.

His grandparents couldn't help admiring his shrewdness. But Riddhima pulled Akshat on her lap saying "Mera Akshu bahut seeda sada aur bhola hai." At once the little one quickly walked towards her calling out "mama, mama," When he came close she spanked his bottom playfully and said "Magar yeh badmaash aur chalaak hai."

Dr. S: That's always the case. The first child is innocent and straightforward but the second one is naughtier and manipulative.

P: But in our house it was the opposite. The younger one was the innocent one. 'Was' being the imperative word.

Riddhima just stared at her hearing that and asked "Matlab? You mean to say I'm not now? Of course you are right. Life teaches one everything."

P: Come on Riddhima main to mazak kar rahi thi.

R: Perhaps you didn't like my talking to di in that manner. But I won't tolerate anyone blaming my Armaan unnecessarily, for no fault of his. Aur main pehle wali Riddhima bhi nahi rahi, jo sab kuch sun kar chup chaap rehti.

Armaan put his arms around her shoulder and said "Riddhima, cool down. You are getting unnecessarily agitated."

P: I also don't blame you for it Riddhima. A wife should always take up for her husband, especially such a considerate and affectionate one.

That made Riddhima smile and Armaan blush.

Part 142

Seeing their sullen faces after the Guptas left, Armaan wondered how to cheer them up. "Shopping karne chale?" he asked.

R: Shopping?

A: Diwali aa rahi hai. Let's shop for clothes. We haven't shopped in Kochi in a long time.

Ak: Yess. Dad mujhe na Alshay Kumar Tees Maar Khan mein pehente hain na, waise sleeveless jacket chahiye.

A: Lekin tumne to woh picture dekhi nahi. Phir tumhe kaise pata?

Ak: Actually Akshay Kumar Tania ke favourite hero hai. Uske paas unki badi picture hai. Usne newspapaer se kaati hai. Mujhe wahi jacket chahiye.

R: Armaan Diwali ke liye abhi ded mahina baaki hai.

A: To kya hua. We don't come often to Kochi.

R: That's true. Ok chalo.

They headed to their favourite Mall and Armaan set about fulfilling Akshat's wishes. Having got him the jacket he wanted and few other clothes, they went to select clothes for the little one. As Riddhima picked up one and placed it on Ani to check his size, he pushed it away saying "nai". No one understood him then. Akshat picked up a set with an appliqu work of a tall giraffe on the waist coat. At once Ani leant from Armaan's arms and pulled it from his anna saying "Ani" and hugging it to his chest.

"Paagal yeh mujhe fit nahi hoga. Main tere liye hi nikaal raha tha." Said Akshat giggling at his brother's action and went away to browse through the latest games in the toys section.

Riddhima had picked a striped T-Shirt for Ani and brought it towards him. The little one immediately pushed it away and pointing in Akshat's direction said "Anna". Both his parents looked surprised at him. Then when he turned on the other side he saw a romper with an elephant picture on it. Pointing towards it he started saying "Ani, Ani". Riddhima was shocked at his behaviour. "Armaan, dekho he's just a year old and he already has preferences. See, he likes clothes with animals on them."

To test him, Armaan picked a few T-Shirts, one with animals printed on it, one striped colorfully and one plain. Armaan placed them in front of him on the rack and asked "Ani ko kaunsa chahiye?" He pointed to the one having animals print.

A: You are absolutely right Riddhima. He has strong preferences.

R: I never knew such a small could. When Akshat was a baby he wore whatever I made him wear, though he used to be happy when he got to wear new clothes. But this is a bit too much. Don't you think so?

A: Yes, this fellow is very sharp and shrewd. He knows what he wants and how to get it. Akshat is very innocent, just like you. You were always out to please your di, your parents and even your friends. It was rarely about yourself – what you wanted, what you liked. Though now you've changed.

R: Now you've become like that. Only living for us, putting aside all your wants for us.

A: Of course not. Why do you feel that I'm putting aside all my wants?

Then putting his arms around her shoulder he said "Riddhima I always did what I pleased, but it didn't give me so much pleasure as when I do what you people want. It gives me immense pleasure to see happiness glow in your eyes. So now my preferences are, all that you people want."

She too put her arms around his waist and put her head against his shoulder saying "Come let's go to the men's section now."

A: No the women's section first.

And as always he had his way. While she was looking at the salwar suits, he went straight to the rack which had a variety of long skirts and picked a pretty one with a low waist. "Try this" he said handing it to her. "Skirt? Come on Armaan I'm not a teenager to wear that."

A: These are the in things now. Everyone is wearing them, even at parties.

She took it from him and went to the trial room. When she came out wearing her own clothes he asked "kya hua?"

R: The pattern is meant to be worn low and the top for it should also be short. Otherwise the pattern will not show out.

A: So?

R: Armaan I'm a mother of two kids, how can I wear that low waist skirt?

Winking at her, he said "but you've still have maintained your figure. You can surely wear it."

R: Armaan maybe in cities like Mumbai, we can wear whatever we please, because there we move with different circle of people, at different times. The group whom we meet on profession level is completely different from our family circle. Then we have yet another circle of just very close friends, where we can be just ourselves without any inhibitions. But we've made this quaint little town our home now. So as the saying goes, 'When in Rome do as Romans do.' Here we do not have well defined circles. Our colleagues and patients attend most of the social functions we do. So we need to maintain our decorum at all times.

Seeing his face fall she said "I'm not saying I won't wear a skirt, I'm just saying I'll get a more suitable one."

He nodded in agreement. She was right as usual. Finally she chose a pretty sequined skirt And a pretty waist length top. She also had a long scarf going with it. When she came out of the changing room and stood before him in it, his smile and expression said it all. But to tease her he said "To tell you honestly, you look better now than you did in your internship days." "Whack" came her bag on his back before she went back to the trial room, leaving him rubbing his back, and complaining to the kids about their mama manhandling him. Akshat only giggled watching the drama between his parents but the little one was laughing outright since he found it thrilling when anyone, except himself, got whacked. Armaan just glared at the two of them and went to the saree section with Ani's pram leaving Akshat to tell his mama where he was.

When Riddhima went to the saree section with Akshat, Armaan had slected a typical Kerala mundu type saree and was slecting another silk saree.

R: Armaan mere paas to aisi waali sadi hai na?

A: yeh tumhareliye nahi hai.

R: Phir? Akka ke liye?

He pointed to the silk saree he had chosen and said "Yeh akka ke liye hai. Aur who meri girl friend ke liye." Riddhima gave him a silly stupid grin saying "Jab mil jaayegi tab le lena. Kyonki jab tak main zinda hoon woh milne se rahi." When he collected the bill and said chalo let see some salwar suits. She couldn't contain her curiosity so kept nagging him "Batao na kiske li woh saree kharidi". Ultimately he got fed up and said "maa ke liye. Hum Diwali pe Mumbai jaa rahein hai na, isliye. Chalo tum Anjie ke liye kuch choose karo. Phir hum gents section jaakar papa aur Atul ke liye kapde le lenge."

R: Aur tumhare liye bhi. What about Anshul?

Ak: Dad ne le liya hai, same mere jaise hi jacket aur pant, shirt.

As they were leaving the women's section Armaan stopped at a mannequin which had a pretty pink saree darped on it. Calling a salesman, he said, "I want this saree packed." "Sure sir" he said and went to speak to someone. Seeing Armaan standing and staring at the mannequin Riddhima tapped Armaan's shoulder asking "Aisey kya dekh rahe ho?"

A: Doesn't this saree remind you of something?

Riddhima looked at it closely and said "I think I had one, somewhat like that."

The salesman took the mannequin away.

A: yes, which you had worn for the dandiya at Sapna's house.

The salesman came and handed the bill to Armaan.

R:You purchased that saree? Why?

A: I'll tell you later. Let's get done with the shopping.

When they went to the men's section Riddhima sent Armaan to pick out things for Atul and her dad, while she picked an awesome suit for him. When she asked him to go and try it on, he questioned "Riddhima main yeh kab pehnunga? I rarely get an occasion to wear suits. All the suits I have are just hanging in the closet. Why one more?

R: For the new Sanjeevani's inauguration.

A: What?

R: Yes, papa ne kaha na you are also going to become one of the directors on Sanjeevani's board, as an appreciation for having helped Sanjeevani come out, of one of it's worst crisis.

A: Maine to mana kiya, lekin papa nahin maan rahe hain.

R: Right, is liye yeh suit us din ke liye.

After all the shopping they were hungry and thirsty. So they headed to the food court. Junior was sleepy as well, so he became cranky. While Armaan went to order food for the three of them, Riddhima started feeding the little one with biscuits. Armaan came with a cup of luke warm milk for the little one, but he had only had two biscuits and a few sips of the milk when his eyes started drooping and he fell asleep.

It was late evening when they reached home. They were tired but had to get set for the following week. When they sat at the dinner table Akshat said "Anshul kitna lucky hai na? When his parents asked him what he meant, he replied "woh nani aur nanu se roz mil sakta hai. Hum to saal mein ek ya do baar hi mil paate hai." Riddhima at once consoled him saying "ab ek mahine baad hum Mumbai ja rahein hai na, to jaldi hi milna hoga."

All were happy to hit the bed. The whole week had been a hectic one with Ani's birthday and guests. As she lay beside him, she asked "Ab batao tumne woh pink wali saree kyon karidi? Hugging her close he said "You on that dandiya day you were looking soooooooooo beautiful, I just couldn't take my eyes off you. If it hadn't been for Anjie, we would have become a couple that day itself. That's why I bought that saree. I've always been searching for a similar saree for you. I've got you sarees in many shades of pink. But never found this shade. That colour really suits you. That's why I bought it. You also wear it for the inauguration."

After a moment, Riddhima pulled a little away from him and looking up at him asked him "Lekin tumne di se sach mein aisi bet lagaye thi?"

A: Ya I did.

Seeing her a little sad he said "Actually I had a reason for doing so. I had started falling for you. But I knew Anjali, or for that everybody, thought I was a flirt. I knew she would approve of me as your boyfriend. So I wanted some excuse to get closer to you. Hence I made that stupid bet. I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt your feelings."

Seeing him so apologetic, she put her palms against his cheek and said "I've forgotten all that long ago, though that day I was very hurt. I felt more bad because I always had an inferior complex about myself. I knew I was not modern like di. So I felt boys wouldn't want to befriend me. And when a handsome hunk like you openly declared your liking for me that night, I was in seventh heaven. But hearing di's words, everything went crashing down, like the glass in my hand. It only reaffirmed my feeling that boys didn't like me."

"And you were so very wrong" he said kissing her lips. "I understand you were very traditional in your way of dressing, but a person had to just peek into your adorable heart, and they'd be bowled over, as I was. Sometimes I can't believe my luck. That a person like me, who never believed in love, won your love, a person who believed in eternal love. And now you've made me also believe likewise." As always, when they travelled down memory lane they ended up loving each other even more.

Part 143

The Malliks arrived in Mumbai two days prior to Diwali. During the flight Ani just refused to stay in his seat. Even the toys given by the airhostess wouldn't keep him still. He cried till he was allowed to walk down the aisle, as if he owned the aircraft. Akshat followed him around to make sure he didn't fall or hurt himself.

A cute girl around the same age as Ani, sat on her dad's lap licking a lollipop. When Ani came near them, her dad asked her to shake hands with him. The clever fellow shook hands with her, but simultaneously snatched the lollipop from her and popped it into his own mouth. And the little girl began to wail. Akshat tried to pull it out of his hand and pandemonium broke loose, with Ani rolling on the floor and refusing to let go of the lollipop.

Riddhima was totally embarrassed by his behavior but Armaan argued after all he was just a baby. He couldn't understand etiquette and manners. So it was ok. He went and apologized to the couple, but the baby wouldn't stop crying as they didn't have another one to give her. Fortunately Armaan had picked up a few Cadbury bars before boarding. He offered one to her and she became quiet. She even gave him a sweet smile and was ready to go with him.

But how could our hero stand his dad having someone else in his lap. He started creating a ruckus. So Armaan ended up with both of them on his lap. Not happy with that, the little fellow now wanted the chocolate she was eating. Luckily Armaan had enough stocked, for him as well as his anna. After a few minutes when the baby's dad came to take her, Armaan didn't feel like letting her go. But he could see that she was sleepy. So he reluctantly handed her to her father saying "You have a beauty here." The father beamed proudly at the compliment saying "thankyou."

Finally they were glad to be home. The Guptas and the Joshis welcomed them eagerly. They wanted to play with the little one but he had tired himself out and fell asleep promptly after his feed. Only then Riddhima heaved a sigh of relief. Riddhima brought the clothes they had brought for all, while Akshat went around handing it to everyone.

P: Armaan yeh sab kya hai? Iski kya zaroorat thi?

A: Maa, it's Diwali. I hope all of you like what we got you.

Anjie: Wow Ridzi this skirt is so pretty. I didn't think tumhare Munnar mein bhi aisey kapde milte hain.

R:We purchased this at Kochi.

P: Actually hamein tum sab logon ke liye kapde lene chahiye. Par socha aap log aakar khud choose karey to achcha hoga. To sham ko chale shopping karne? Aaj Dhanteras bhi hai.

A: Sure, why not?

Anshul: Mama, dekho, Armaan uncle ne mere liye Akshay Kumar jaise jacket laye hai. Thank you uncle, mujhe bahut accha laga.

A: good, tumhe pasand to aaya. Actually yeh idea Akshat ka tha.

Whenever Anjie stayed at her parents house, she occupied the room she used to share with Riddhima. But this time on Riddhima's request the Joshis shifted to the guest room on the ground floor. Akshat and Anshul were to move in with their nanu and nani, as the grandparents wanted to spend time with them, especially Akshat.

When Riddhima came down ready for the shopping session everyone's eyes popped out. On Armaan's request, she had worn the skirt.

Anj: Riddhima I don't believe it. I never thought you would ever wear anything other than your suits.

P: Haan college mein bhi you never liked to wear anything else. I should say Armaan has really changed you.

A: Arrey but yeh to batao has she changed for the better or worse?

Atul: For better of course. Yeh tumhe bahut suit karta hai Ridzi.

P: sach bahut achchi lag rahi ho.

Anj: If you had worn higher heels you would look even better.

Riddhima accepted all their compliments with a smile, even Anjie's backhanded one and thanked them.

A: To chale?

The whole evening went in shopping for clothes, accessories etc. Being festive season the shops were extremely crowded. Thankfully only the Malliks clothes had to be purchased, others had finished their shopping in advance. But by the time they were done, all of them were dead tired and to top that Ani was also very cranky. He wasn't willing to stay in the pram. He wanted to be carried and soon fell asleep. But the minute he was laid in his pram he woke up and started crying.

Though they took turns in carrying him, carrying a sleeping child was really difficult. They were all very happy with their purchases but were glad to be back home.As they had had dinner outside, they straight away went to their rooms.

The boys'eyes were drooping by the time they changed and brushed their teeth. They didn't even pester their nani for a story, but just fell asleep. Just as AR lay down on the bed, the little one awoke, hungry. Riddhima realized that nothing had been cooked at home that evening. She wondered what she would feed him. Armaan reminded her that they still had the noodle cups which they had carried during the flight. It needed just boiling water to be poured over it.

When Riddhima made a face as she would have to go and boil water, Armaan pushed back on the bed, saying tum leti raho, main dekh loonga. Armaan showed Ani the noodle cup which he recognized instantly, as it was his favourite food. Armaan explained to him that he was going to get prepare it, so he should stay quietly with mama till then. But the little one wouldn't listen, he wanted to go along. So father and son headed to the kitchen with the noodle cup.

Armaan was sitting in the hall and feeding the little one, telling him the story of an elephant, when Shashank came downstairs, to make sure that he had latched the door. Seeing them he enquired where Riddhima was and why Armaan was feeding him. Armaan explained that she was tired hence he had volunteered to do so. Shashank felt proud seeing that Armaan was so much concerned about his daughter's comfort.

The next morning they were all going to Lonavala to distribute clothes to all the children at the orphanage. So they set out early in the morning. They had decided that they would have their breakfast on the way and lunch at the orphanage. Riddhima had prepared a flask of coffee for the adults and another flask had warm milk for the kids. Half an hour after starting Riddhima started distributing coffee.

Padma took the first sip and relishing it with her eyes closed, said "mmm. Maza aa gaya. Riddhima I really missed your coffee all these years." Then turning to Armaan she said, "You know on Sundays and holidays, it was Riddhima's duty to make the morning coffee and breakfast. And she really made something new everytime."

Anj: yes, with a cookery book in her hand.

Dr. S: At least she made an attempt and most of the time it used to be quite edible too.

All of them except Armaan started laughing.

Armaan looked at Anjie with a smile saying "You must have been still in bed then, I suppose."

Anj: Of course who wakes up before noon on a holiday? Ridzi used to wake up for her morning jog. I didn't have to do all that to maintain my figure.

Riddhima was scared they would end up quarelling so she interrupted their conversation saying "Armaan zara Ani ko doodh pila do na" and handed him the sipper.

After an hour they stopped at the foodcourt for breakfast. It was nearly an hour later that all of them piled back into the van having had their breakfast and the children having had milk also. It was midday when they reached Lonavala. All the children were eagerly waiting for them as Bua and maasi had told the children, that they would be getting new clothes that day. Gappu and Mini came out running seeing Armaan and Riddhima. And Bua followed slowly with her walking stick.

When Riddhima and Armaan went to touch her feet and take her blessings, she hugged them tight asking "Itne saalon mein is bua ki yaad nahi aayi?" Both the ladies had tears in their eyes.

B: Bachche kahan hai?

Riddhima introduced Akshat and he at once touched her feet. Bua was highly impressed with him, she kissed him and blessed him. Ani was reluctant to go to her and she didn't force him. She just put her hand on his head blessing him.

Akshat was very happy to meet his friends Mini maasi and Gappu chachu and gave them a hug. Ani was a bit hesitant to go to Mini when she called him, but when she went in and brought a chocolate bar, he jumped into her arms. After accepting the chocolate from her, he said "anna kaki" pointing to his elder brother. Gappu purposely pretended not to understand him and said "achcha theek hai apna chocolate bhai ko dena chahte ho?" He at once hid the chocolate behind his back and pointing to the house said once again "anna kaki". Everyone started admiring his smartness.

When the children called him at first Ani wouldn't go to them. Then when he saw them playing with a ball, he leapt to his dad and putting his chocolate in his dad's pocket said "Ani kaki" (meaning keep Ani's chocolate with you) and went to play with the kids.

Then they all went in, and the clothes distribution began. Bua took Armaan and Riddhima to her room as she wanted to talk to them. She sat on the bed and pulled Riddhima down beside her. Armaan sat opposite them on the chair. Holding Riddhima's face in her palms, she kept looking at her for a long time. "Bachpan se lekar bahut kuch saha hai meri bachchi ne." she told Armaan. "Jab tum itni takleef mein thi, tab tujhe apni bua ki yaad nahi aayi? Sab kuch akeli sehati rahi.Tumhe mere paas aana chahiye tha."

At that Riddhima broke down. "main apne kiye par bahut sharminda thi, bua. Kisi se milne ki himmat nahi thi mujmein. Meri first pregnanacy thi. Man mein der saare sawaal uthe, doctor hone ke bawajood. Tab main aap ko bahut yaad karti kyon ki Smriti mom ke jaane ke baad, Padma mom aane tak aap hi to meri mom thi. Aap he mere teenage mein mere har sawaal ka jawab deti. Maine aapko bahut miss kiya bua." Both of them cried hugging each other.

Then Bua wiped her tears and kissed her forehead saying "Ab tumhare zindagi mein kabhi koi gham nahi hogi, kyonki tumhe itna pyaar karnewala jo tumhare kareeb hai. Main jaanti hoon woh tumhare aankh se ek boond aansoon bhi nikalne nahi dega. Pehle hi tumse bahut pyaar karta tha, main samaj gayi thi, lekin ab to tumhe palkhon mein bitaye rakha hai, maine suna."

R: Haan bua aapne theek suna. Armaan mera itna khyaal rakhta hai ki main un saat saal ki takleef kab ki bhool chuki hoon. Aaj main bahut khush hoon. Mujhe ab apni zindagi se koi shikayat nahi hai.

Then bua called Armaan near her. He went and sat at her feet. She brushed his hair with her hand saying "Bhagwan tumhari jodi salamat rakhe. Dua karti hoon tum dono mein aisey hi pyaar bana rahe."

Then she said "chalo chalkar khana kha lo. Aaj bahut din baad dil bahut khush hua hai, tum dono se milkar. Aaj main bhi mithayi khaoongi." When the three of them went to the dining room, all the children were seated on the floor.

A huge circle had been drawn in the centre of the dining area. Each child picked a small mat from the pile and placed it outside the circle and sat on it. Soon the elder children served the first course on the plates and passed it around. The children placed their plates inside the circle mark and ate quietly. Anshul and Akshat were also seated among them. The very tiny tots were fed by the elder children and Bua's assistant whom the children called maasi.

When maasi tried to feed Ani along with the other one year olds, he shook his head from side to side asking for the plate in his hand. Armaan picked him up and making him sit among the children on the floor, placed his plate in front of him. Imitating the other children he also started eating the dal rice. Seeing so many items in the other plates, he called out to his dad and pointing to the jalebi in his neighbours plate said "Ani mum mum".

Armaan purposely pretended not to understand and said "Haan dekho Ajay kitna good boy hai. kitni achchi tarah se kha raha hai. Tum bhi khao." Again he shook his head and pointing to the jalebi said "Ani".

A: Haan Ani first finish karega.

Now the little one lost his head because his dad wasn't understanding what he wanted. So he bent over and snatched the jalebi from Ajay's plate and started eating it. The little boy started crying aloud. Armaan consoled him and served him more jalebis. At once Ajay picked his plate and moved far away from Ani. Everyone started laughing seeing the children's antics.

Then the elders sat for lunch while the children were asked to watch some TV program. Mini had given Ani a set of coloured beakers and he was busy piling them or placing one inside the other. Riddhima asked Akshat to keep a watch on him lest he beat up someone.

Mini: Aaj bahut dinon baad bua ne apne haton se 'masale baat' banaya hai, Riddhima di ke liye.

Riddhima remembered whenever she used to come to stay here during her childhood, she would ask bua to prepare this flavoured rice dish. She gave a side to her bua who was sitting next to her and with tears in her eyes asked "Aap ko abhi tak yaad hai?"

Bua: Haan bilkul, yeh sab baatein kaise bhool sakti hoon?

A: Yeh kya baat hui bua, aapne Riddhima ka favourite dish banaya, aur mera?

Gappu: Fikar not Armaan bhaiyya, aap ka favourite kheer bhi to bana hai

All of them had a hearty meal with so many special dishes prepared in their honor.

Part 119

After Armaan's narration it was Riddhima's turn. She revealed to everyone how he had given her his mother's kada that day. But since he had promised her, he couldn't tell anyone about their relationship. So, when Rahul held her hand during the dance, though he was boiling from within, he couldn't do anything or show his possessiveness for her. Everyone around was laughing, imagining what these two would have undergone at that time and also teasing them about it.

But this darling couple was oblivious to all that, because, they were in a world of their own. They were recollecting what had happened after that, when Riddhima ran away with Amit's shoes and Armaan chased her. They looked at each other and felt as if they were on that cot again. Both nervous about their proximity, with their brains asking them to move away, while their hearts pleaded them to get closer and never move apart. But this incident, they didn't share with their friends. (Some things are meant to be only between the couple.)

While all the chatting and teasing was going on, the waiters took the first order for starters and soups. The menu had quite a variety of soups, right from the humble tomato soup to the exotic, Tom Yum Goong, Thai soup. Though the Malliks were pure vegetarians, by choice, they wanted their guests to have food of their liking.

Cubed paneer and vegetable shashlik,

and Achaari chicken tikka

were the chosen as starters.

(The food was even more mindblowing than the dcor.)

This was followed by meal comprising of exotic international receipes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Vegetarian Som Tam Thai salad made from Green Papaya,

Vegetarian Mexican gumbo,

Italian Cajun prawns and fish,

Nepali chicken momo

Hyderabadi mutton biryani,

And Italian pizza

specially ordered for the boys.

Besides all this, there were rotis of different kinds and a couple of Indian veg and non veg curries as Kaka and akka were not used to the international foodstuffs.

During the meal, Ani was the chief source of entertainment, as his dad made sure that he tasted all the dishes with his mama's protests falling on deaf ears. His facial expression after each morsel was worth watching. Sometimes he smacked his lips, sometimes just closed his eyes shut tightly or shook his head vigorously. But the Mexican Gumbo proved to be too spicy for his liking. He didn't make any expressions but just started wailing loudly. When Riddhima glared at Armaan, he quickly picked up Ani's water sipper and put it to his mouth. But that didn't help as he continued crying.

The waiter judged the situation and got some sugar, but Ani just wouldn't open his mouth. Armaan left his food and carried him out to pacify him. But it was proving impossible. Actually he was sleepy also and that was another reason for his crying. Finally Riddhima went and took him from Armaan and proceeded to the room the waiter was pointing out. Armaan followed her and closed the door. The crying stopped only when Ani latched on to her breasts, though he was hiccupping in between.

Armaan came and knelt in front of her, holding his ears and said "I'm sorry, I got too carried away. I should have tasted it before I fed him." Though Riddhima was very irritated with him, she couldn't stop herself from forgiving him, when he asked forgiveness so cutely.

R: it's ok. Tum jaakar khao. Main aati hoon. Actually he was sleepy, that's why he started crying so much. Go.

A: No I'll wait for you.

R: Baaki sab kya sochenge?

A: Jo bhi sochna hai sochne do. I'm not leaving you alone here.

She was sitting on the sofa. He went sat beside her with his arms around her waist and his chin resting on her shoulder. When Ani fell asleep, he picked him up and burped him while she adjusted her dress. Then both of them joined the others who had almost finished their dinner. The desert comprised of a wide variety of sundaes as everyone opted for icecream, rather than any other sweet dish.

Nikki had Akshita in her arm and was trying to bottle feed her but she was turning her head away, not willing to take the bottle in her mouth. Riddhima understood her problem and pointed the room where she could feed her. As she looked around hesitantly, akka stood up ready to escort her, taking the sleeping Ani from Armaan, so that he and Riddhima could finish their dinner.

As Riddhima picked a spoonful of icecream she remembered her little one, who was so fond of this. Seeing her face Armaan guessed her thoughts and said "Ani would have enjoyed this very much na? I should have fed him this and not all that stuff which I did."

R: It's ok icecream kabhi bhi khila sakte hain usey.

By the time all had finished dinner it was past 11pm. The boys were also already sleepy. So they headed straight home. The boys just changed and dropped to sleep. That night all the males had only one question for their partners ' Was the dinner really an unforgettable one? And as you would have guessed the ladies had to agree that it was indeed an unforgettable one.

In AR's room also the same discussion was going on. After they had washed and changed, Riddhima was undoing her hairstyle when Armaan came and stood behind her, with his hands on her shoulders and just raised his eyebrows questioningly to her image in the mirror. She smiled at him and started brushing her undone hair. Then she stood up, turned in his arms and holding his face in her palms gave him a lingering kiss. Then she said, "Thanks for the mindblowing dinner. It will be etched in my mind forever. It was really an unforgettable dinner and the greatest thing was that you managed to arrange everything in such a short time. You are the best Dr. Armaan Mallik, I love you." His instant response was "I love you too, sweetheart." And that was followed by another deeper kiss.

Then he picked her up in his arms and took her to bed to top the unforgettable dinner with something even more unforgettable.

Part 128

Armaan kept his promise and dutifully looked after the kids, giving Riddhima a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon to work on her assingment. That evening when he took Kaka for his weekly vegetable shopping, he took the kids also along, so that she could have that time free. They dropped Kaka at the market and drove to the park. The three of them had lot of fun with Armaan pushing the swing and seesaw for them.

Riddhima was very pleased with the progress she was making and thanks to the inputs from Armaan, her assignment was turning out to be very good. As she was engrossed in it, her cell rang. It was a call from her parents. She picked it up happily and spoke to them. From the time they had returned from Mumbai, her parents were constantly complaining about how they were missing their grandchildren. Ani had charmed them with his antics, proving that he was Armaan's son. (But what took the father months and months of hard work, the son had achieved in just a couple of days – winning over Dr. Shashank.) Akshat with his intelligence and excellent manners had reminded them of baby Riddhima.

At Mumbai, Dr. Shashank had given Armaan the proposal of joining Sanjeevani, as he had poured most of his savings into it. But he had rejected it saying that since his field of specialization was psychiatry, he wouldn't be of use in Sanjeevani. But now Shashank had come up with a proposal he couldn't refuse and discussed it with Riddhima. She told them that Armaan and the kids were out and she would get back to them after talking to Armaan about it.

After an hour's play in the park the trio went to pick up kaka and returned home. Riddhima excitedly told them about her parents call. Akshat was unhappy to have missed talking to them.

R: Armaan, papa has got the proposal of starting a psychiatric ward in Sanjeevani passed by the board of directors. He wants you to take over as its head.

A: I already told him I'm not interested in joining Sanjeevani.

R: Armaan, you had said your specialization does not suit Sanjeevani, but now papa has started the psychiatric ward especially for you.

A: Riddhima, I'm neither so qualified nor so experienced to head the department. Moreover I'm very happy here, I don't want to leave MSHC or Munnar. Do you want to shift to Mumbai and be closer to your parents?

R: It's not that Armaan. Just think what a leap it'll be for your career, heading the psychiatry ward of Sanjeevani.

A: Riddhima to tell you frankly, the proposal doesn't attract me one bit. I love this place and am very much happy the way my career is moving.

Riddhima got irritated and left from there saying "You are so adamant. You won't even give it a thought."

Seeing his parents arguing, Akshat who was watching TV, quietly switched it off and walked to his room. He decided to go for his bath before his mama shouted at him, because though his parents rarely quarrelled, whenever they did, his mama would inevitably shout at him for something or the other.

That day there was total silence at the dinner table and it was Ani's turn to get the shouting. He was making a lot of nakhra to have his khichdi, so Riddhima scolded him. Armaan thought it better not to interfere, but akka came and took him away saying she would make him eat it.

Seeing Riddhima at her laptop after dinner, Armaan went to have a talk with Akshat. He was busy writing something in his diary but hid it seeing his dad. When his dad came and sat next to him and hugged him, he asked "Kya hua dad? Mama aapse naaraz hai?" Armaan nodded sadly and said "Mera koi best friend bhi nahi hai jiske ke saath main baat kar sakoon."

AK: Aap aisey kyon keha rahe hain? Main hoon na.

A: Accha mujhe batao, kya tum Mumbai jaana pasand karoge.

AK: Nani ke yahan?

A: Nahi Munnar chodkar wahin rehne. School bhi wahin join karke, tum Anshul se bhi roz mil paoge.

Akshat thought for a while and then said "Nahi mujhe Munnar jyada achcha lagta hai. Mere saare friends ko chodkar, main nahi jaana chahoonga. Chuttiyon mein Mumbai ja sakte hain. Waise wahan sab jagah bheed bahut rehti hai. I don't like Mumbai."

Armaan high fived him and asked "To mera saath doge, mama ko manane mein?"

Ak: Sure dad.

Both father and son went to Riddhima and Armaan very sweetly asked "Riddhima can we talk?"

"When you've already decided what's there to talk?" she asked as she continued working on the computer.

A: Riddhima, tell me do you have any other reason, except my career, for going to Mumbai.

She stopped her work and replied, "It'll be good for my career also na? See Di never had to give up her career because maa took care of Anshul. If we go to Mumbai, I can also join Sanjeevani without worrying about the kids."

A: Riddhima, do you think it's fair to put such a huge responsibility on maa at this age? They have done their duty of raising their children. Aren't they entitled to enjoy their retired life as they please?

R: But they are doing all this only because that they want to spend time with Akshat and Ani.

A: Riddhima spending time is different and babysitting is different. They'll be tied down to home, if the children are left in their care. They can't socialize as and when they please.

R: Maa doesn't go anywhere. Even if she wants to, her Arthritis doesn't permit.

A: But with the Arthritis she'll be able to take care of Ani? Riddhima if it's just about your working, I can get you a placement in Munnar or you can even start your own clinic here. All along I thought you wanted to stay at home with the kids. If you want to work I'm sure akka and kaka will manage the kids.

That set her thinking. Armaan indicated to Akshat with his eyes, to put forth his argument.

Ak: Haan mama, Munnar kitna beautiful place hai, Mumbai main khelne ke liye parks bhi nahi hain.

R: Seems both of you have ganged up to dissuade me. Jo marzi mein aaye karo. Main kaun hoti hoon kuch bolne wali.

Both of them said together, "Aisi baat nahi hai Riddhima/mama," and gave her a kiss on her either cheeks. She pushed them away and went and lay on the bed.

Both the males hung their heads and went out of the room. While she mumbled to herself "bete ko saath laaya mujhe manane. Khud pyaar se mana nahi sakta tha?"

As he entered his room with his father, Akshat asked "Ab kya karenge?"

A: It's ok beta, we'll try again tomorrow. Par tum ho na mere saath? Nahi to main bahut akele pad jaoonga.

"Of course dad, main aap ke saath hoon," Akshat assured him and gave him a hug.

"Chalo beta, bahut raat ho chuki hai, so jao." He tucked him in bed and kissed his forehead saying "Goodnight best friend".

He went back to his room and lying on the bed, peeped over Riddhima, who was facing the wall and sleeping in the far corner of the bed, and asked "naaraz ho?" Riddhima pushed away his hand saying "Shut up Armaan, let me sleep".

He felt hurt, but quietly lay down on his side of the bed and after turning and tossing for a long time, at last fell asleep. The rain had started lashing and some water was being sprayed on his face from the open window. That woke him up. He tried to get up to close the door, but she lay sprawled over him, hugging him from the waist. He smiled to himself and kissed her forehead. Then slowly laying her head on the pillow, closed the window and came back to bed. Then pulling her against him, her head on his chest, he went to sleep.

When he woke up she was already sitting on her laptop and Ani was playing in his playpen. Seeing his dad awake, he shouted to be picked up. Armaan picked him up, kissed him. Then he went towards Riddhima and kissed her cheeks. She irritatedly said "Armaan mujhe kaam karne do."

A: Arrey last night you were all over me, I thought your mood was ok, ab phir se kya ho gaya?

"Don't talk rubbish" she retorted angrily. "I was sleeping on my side of the bed, in a corner. I didn't come anywhere near you. And please mujhe aur pareshaan mat karo." Turning to the other side she smiled to herself, because she knew though what he said was true, he had no proof. She was the one who woke up first hearing Ani's cry and was surprised to find herself hugging him and sleeping on him.

His face fell. And as if he understood it, Ani put his arms around his dad's neck and gave him a 'pa'. "Thank you beta, at least tumne to apne dad ko good morning kissi di" said the nautankbaaz dad. As father and son went into the washroom she mumbled to herself, "Armaan, main itni aasani se nahi manne wali."

After washing and changing Ani, Armaan brought him back to his playpen, but he was not willing to get in. He clutched on to Armaan's night shirt and started crying. He didn't want Riddhima to be disturbed , so he went and handed him to akka, so that he could shower. He had to come up with some plan to patao her, he thought as he showered and wished like Archimedes he could also come up with a solution while bathing. But unfortunately everyone can't be as lucky. He just couldn't think of any foolproof plan.

He thought it would be best to pretend nothing had changed. So after getting dressed he told Riddhima, "Tum bhi fresh ho jao aur breakfast karne aa jao. I'll go and wake up Akshat." She didn't reply and he proceeded to Akshat's room. She was pissed off that he didn't pester her when she remained silent, as he normally would.

He woke up Akshat and got him ready as they discussed all possible strategies to cool their heroine. They went for breakfast and saw that she wasn't there, though kaka had set the plates and started serving. Armaan asked Akshat to go and call her. He came back with a sad face saying that his mama had said "Akshu mujhe yeh kaam aaj hi khatam karna hai, tum log kha lo main baad mein kha loongi."

Part 133

Riddhima kept looking at the road after Armaan left. Jyoti had taken the first patient in. It was only when a patient entering into the clinic, fell on her, she came out of the reverie. Riddhima held the lady who was warbling due to high fever and weakness, and made her sit down. She noticed that the waiting room was already full with patients. As the first patient came out of the consulting room, she took old lady and entered in.

She checked her and convinced her to take an injection. And made her lie down outside on the bench for sometime till she was feeling better. The whole morning flew away examining patients. Only when she heard her cell ring, she noticed that it was already 12. It was Armaan calling. "I'm sorry Riddhima, I won't be able to come home for lunch, I'm held up here with the foreign doctors. Can you please take a cab and go home?" He asked apologetically. "Don't worry Armaan we still have two patients. After that I'll call for a cab and leave." She assured him.

"How long have you been married?" she heard Jyoti's unexpected question after seeing off the last patient. She smiled at her and said "a year and a half."

J: Oh! same as ours. I thought you must be married very recently.

Riddhima blushed understanding what she meant. And just covered up by saying "Armaan is always like that."

J: Do you have a kid as yet?

R: Two sons.

J: Twins?

R: No, no. One is seven years old and other is nine months.

J: Seven? But…

Riddhima was quite used to that question now. At times she had thought of lying and telling people that they have been married for 8 years. But somehow her conscience didn't permit her to do so. So she gave her usual reply, "we were together before, then we got separated for seven years and now we are together again."

Jyoti was curious to know the whole story but she didn't ask anything further, as she didn't know Riddima so well still, to ask her such personal questions.

It was nearly 1 o'clock by the time Riddhima reached home. She was famished. So she changed, washed up and headed straight to the dining table. Ani had also had his lunch and was napping. According to akka he never fussed with his food in her absence. All his nakhra was only with his mama. After having her fill, she went to her room and slumped on the bed.

Feeling his lips on her cheek, she pulled his head down by his hair and kissed him properly on the lips. "Beta khana laga dia hai," kaka's voice rang out, but both of them were unaware of it. Seeing Armaan had not come to the table yet, he repeated his call, coming closer to the room. At once they broke apart and she drowsily looked at the clock. It was a quarter past 2. Looking at him with surprise she asked "Tum kab aaye? Aur aate hi shuru ho gaye?" "Shuru maine nahi, tumne kiya. I just kissed your cheek, you were the one who pulled me and kissed me so passionately," He said in a dramatic style to tease her. "Beta" Kaka's voice came from closer quarters. Immediately she pushed him away saying "Jao khana khao. Main aati hoon."

He had started eating when she went to the table, but seeing her, he pulled her on the chair, beside him and said "Khilao na mujhe". Glaring at him she asked "Yeh kya bachpana hai? You've already had half your meal." "I came home only to see you and ask you about your first day. Otherwise I could have also gone out for lunch with them," he said making a small face. She just shook he head and picked up the next morsel to feed him and as she fed him she started to tell him about the morning in the clinic. She had just fed him two morsels when they heard Ani's cry.

She couldn't control her giggle while he burst out, "when I have such kids, I don't need any enemies. I bet he has antennas in his brain, which ring a bell, the minute you come close to me." Stiffling her giggles, she washed her hands and went to pick up the little one. Ani was extremely happy to see her. He was jumping with joy standing in his cot, as she approached him. She picked him up and showered kisses on him which made him very happy and he also started kissing and biting her.

Armaan had finished his lunch and joined them. See him he jumped out of her arms. "Main nahi uthaonga tujhe, hamesha kabab mein haddi banta hai, mere aur meri Riddhima, ke beech. Main nahi bolta tujse." Unaware of what his dad was grumbling about he bent from his mama's arms and falling on his dad's shoulder started kissing and biting him, making his dad's anger melt away. After playing with him for a few minutes Armaan handed him over to Riddhima saying aaj 5.45 ko Shafi aayega tumhe clinic le jaane aur aat bhaje main aaoonga tumhe pick karne.

R: Armaan I'll call you when I'm done with the patients. Come only after that.

He kissed saying "Ok. Bye, see you later." Then kissed the little one saying "bye Mst. Haddi."

With the onset of rain there were a lot of people affected with cold, cough and fever. Today, they had a four year old girl with very high fever and convulsions. Riddhima immediately referred her to Dr. Shaila. The child had to be admitted immediately and according to Dr. Shaila even a few hours delay could have been fatal. The father came later to Riddhima and thanked her for the timely advice. When Riddhima told Armaan about it on their way home, he immediately diverted the car to Dr. Shaila's clinic saying, "Tum ek baar us bachchi ko dekh aao. Just go and see if they need anything."

But Riddhima dragged him also inside. The little one was looking very frail and weak. When they reached there, the father was coaxing his wife to eat, but she refused saying she couldn't leave the kid alone. Armaan explained to them that their child was out of danger now and in the best hands. He also promised to wait there with Riddhima till they came back after dinner. When they still didn't agree, he succeeded in coaxing both of them to go and have dinner, by just asking them one question – "If you starve and fall sick who'll look after the child?"

After they left, Armaan sat next to the child and holding her hand in his and said to Riddhima, "See how weak she is. He kept looking at her and smoothing down her hair." He has such special feelings for a girl child, Riddhima noted. Soon the parents were back and thanked them for all the help. They were feeling much better after they'd had some food. They felt more positive with Armaan's words. As they drove back home Riddhima noticed that Armaan was lost in some thought, but when she questioned him about it, he dismissed it as nothing important.

Though Riddhima had rung up Kaka and told him that they would be late, both the kids were waiting up for them. Akshat hadn't even had his dinner. So all of them headed straight to the dining table while Riddhima washed and changed before joining them.

That night as they lay down on the bed, Riddhima noticed Armaan preoccupied. Actually she was feeling very sleepy. Even while having dinner her eyes were drooping. Ani had thankfully slept immediately after dinner and Akshat had also not demanded for a bedtime story. She lay down beside him and asked "What is it Armaan, you are not yourself since I told you about that kid. Won't you tell me?" It was just a casual question and never expected him to actually reply in such a manner.

He turned towards her, his eyes brimming with tears and said "Riddhima meri bhi ek behen thi, Arushi. She was three years younger than me." Riddhima couldn't believe what she had heard. She just said "Armaan," in a shocked tone. When he didn't say anything further she questioned him, "Kya hua usey?" "I didn't know then but when I was older I came to know that she had some congenital heart problem. She must have been about three years old, when she died." He couldn't continue as tears poured down his eyes.

Riddhima hugged him and her eyes also became moist. "You've never mentioned her to me before." She pointed out. "I had pushed her to a remote corner of my memory but today seeing that little girl brought back all those memories. She was also thin and frail like her. She used to follow me around, with her non-stop "Almaan bhaiya". I loved her a lot, but sometimes I would get irritated by her constant company. When she died, I missed her terribly and became a total loner. I didn't share my sorrow with anyone, but bottled it all up inside me."

He cried like a baby clutching on to Riddhima. She let him cry for sometime before asking "Is that why you love baby girls so much?" "I don't know but I feel very protective towards girls. I feel they need to pampered and treated like princesses." And that night it was he who put his head on her chest and slept like a baby in her arms.

The next morning though the tear marks showed on his face, he was his smiling self once again. Riddhima was happy about that.

A routine was set in the Mallik household with Riddhima beginning to work. After Armaan and Akshat left, Shafi would drop her at the clinic. In the afternoon Armaan would pick on his way home for lunch. Again in the evening Shafi would leave her and Armaan would bring her back at night. She tried to convince him that she could drive herself to the clinic but he wouldn't listen as he felt driving in the narrow streets would add to her tensions.

Days flew by. Ani was becoming naughtier by the day. He was now walking around and pulling down everything he could lay his hands on. Each and everything had to be locked away or kept out of his reach. Akshat was his favourite victim. He couldn't afford to be in the least careless. It was as if he was just waiting for him to leave something around. The minute he got hold of any of his books, they were shredded. No amount of shouting and punishment from his mama bore any result.

That evening when Riddhima came home from the hospital, the house was in a pandemonium. Akshat was crying so loudly that Riddhima thought he was in severe pain. On enquiring she found that he had to submit a science project the next day. He had been working on it since a week, and finally today he had managed to complete it with his dad's help. He had coloured some parts of the chart with water colours. So he had left it on his bed to dry and closed the door of his room. Akka had gone to keep his ironed clothes in his cupboard and had forgotten to shut the door.

While Akshat was waiting for his parents and engrossed watching TV, the little one had sneaked into his room, pulled the chart down and torn a corner of it. After the show, when Akshat walked to his room to check if the drawing had dried, he saw the disaster created by his brother and whacked him in anger. That had made akka angry and she shouted at him saying Ani was a kid and didn't understand anything. So there was verbal war going on between them when Armaan and Riddhima entered the house. Kaka on the other side was assuring Akshat, that his dad would make everything alright.

Both of them consoled Akshat and went to his room to see how bad the situation was. As if he knew he was in the wrong, Ani quietly clung on to his Athai. Riddhima could see that it was really a very pretty chart. She admired the amounts of pain he had taken and that too without pestering her about it. He eyes filled with tears seeing its state. She hugged him and said she would make a totally new one for him, overnight. She felt guilty because had she been there, she would have kept a watch on Ani when akka was busy ironing clothes etc.

But before she could start afresh, Armaan came up with the idea that since the tear was in the lower half, which only had some written matter, they should cut that portion out. They could join another sheet below it and rewrite on it. Akshat felt that the joint would make his work look shabby and wouldn't get the best marks. But his dad promised to make it a neat cut, provided all of them had a quick dinner. So dinner was a very silent affair and the little hero also dared not fuss. They finished it quickly and the trio trooped into Akshat's room with strict warning to akka to keep Ani out of it.

When they locked the room and started the work, the little one came knocking and calling out to them. When they didn't answer him nor open the door, he started sobbing loudly. That tore Armaan's heart. "Riddhima tum jaakar usey sulaao, I'll help Akshat. Actually he asked Akshat also to go to bed, promising to complete everything perfectly. But Akshat refused saying that he would have to do the rewriting otherwise the writing would differ. So finally Riddhima left to take care of the little one while father and son set about repairing the damage.

Guilt weighed heavily on her heart. Was her child paying a price for her ambition? She wondered how all the other working ladies managed. She had kaka and akka to help her, even then she wasn't able to manage things. So many ladies handled both, housework and job, so easily without help from anyone. Surely, it was she who was inefficient, she felt.

When she went back to Akshat's room after Ani had fallen asleep, she was amazed to see the perfect job done by Armaan. From the front view no one could make out that there had been some damage. He can manage any crisis so methodically and calmly, she thought. She felt very inadequate compared to him. But the smile on her son's face was worth watching. He showered his dad with kisses, thanking him profusely and reiterating that he was the best dad in the world. Seeing his mama enter he sought her confirmation, "He's the best, hai na mama?" She nodded in assent and all three of them got into a hug. The males were grinning from ear to ear at their accomplishment, while the female was once again bogged down with her inferiority complex and guilt.

Part 147

Anj: Riddhima what's with your sense of humour. I was just teasing you.

R: Di, by now you should know I don't have a sense of humour.

After feeding one morsel to Akshat she extended her hand with the next morsel towards Anshul's mouth. He smiled at her and opened his mouth. They were conversing in English so thankfully the children didn't understand much. But all the others were feeling embarrassed. Riddhima continued to feed the boys as if nothing had happened. Her last retort had thankfully silenced Anjali.

After she finished feeding the boys, she took them to their room and making them sit on the bed, told them a very funny story of Akbar and Birbal. Both of them were shortly roaring with laughter. Then looking at her watch she said "Ab mujhe jaana hoga, kal aoongi." Then kissing both the kids she bid them goodnight. Akshat clung to her for a few minutes before letting her go and then said "Mama main bahut khush hoon ke aap yahan aayi. Dad se bhi kaho na yahan kabhie aaye."

Riddhima smiled at him saying "zaroor kahoongi beta."

Ak: Aur Ani ko mere derr saare kisses dena.

R: Zaroor.

Padma had packed some food for both of them and taking Riddhima aside said "Tum Anjali ke baton ka bhura nahi manna beta, tum jaanti ho na usey." "Nahi maa maine bilkul bura nahi maana. I can understand di's insecurities. Right from our childhood she has always done as she pleased and always got what she wanted. And I was one who never even knew what I wanted, let alone get it. I used to be just happy for her. Today when I have a perfect life with a doting husband, adorable sons and happiness that I've never even dreamt of, she's not able to digest it. Anyways I'm used to her taunts from childhood maa, and it doesn't hurt me anymore."

Padma was stunned hearing Riddhima. She knew everything she said was absolutely true. What surprised her was her maturity. Suddenly Riddhima hugged her and with a sweet smile said "Aap tension mat lo maa. I'm fine." Then she went and hugged everyone and bid them goodbye, even Anjie. When Atul got ready to drop her she said "Jeeju don't bother. I'd asked the cab to comeback, and he's already here. He just gave me a call. Bye and goodnight." Before anyone could react, she was gone.

Padma was feeling restless after Riddhima's departure. As she lay on the bed that night, sleep was very far from her eyes. Her mind went to the time 33 years ago when she had handed over her first and only child to a very loving couple, hoping they would provide her everything in life, which she couldn't. They had promised to bring her up as their own daughter and they had kept their promise.

At these years Padma had thought that she was the one making all the sacrifices for the well being of her child. But today it made her wonder whether she had done it only to salve her conscience and to save herself from being labelled an unwed mother? Had her child been punished for her mistake of trusting the wrong person and crossing certain limits before marriage? And when her daughter had done the same mistake, she had just abandoned her. Any other girl might have pointed out her mistake, reminding her that she had been no different. But Riddhima had remained silent and suffered alone.

She had been so selfish, but Riddhima had forgiven her so easily, in just a few hours, when she had come to know about her adoption. Padma knew that Riddhima had been very deeply hurt, when she had asked "Kya main itni buri thi ke aapne mujhe apne paas nahi rakhna chaha?" But after that she had never questioned her about anything. Probably she didn't want to make her mother feel guilty. And hiding all her sorrow had given priority to her mother's health. Oh God! she was such a selfless person. Just her opposite.

She felt ashamed of herself. When she went to see her grandchild, she had been very disappointed that daughter had also had a premarital affair, like herself. But then, she should have been more supportive of her, understanding her condition. On the contrary, she had just blindly accepted her husband's decision and left her alone, not wanting to create a rift in their new-found relationship. (She had been married to Dr. Shashank only recently then.)

Padma was thankful to God for having blessed her child with such a wonderful life partner, in return for all her goodness. She was aware that now Armaan was Riddhima's world. All her love was only for him and their kids. She did care about her family, but Armaan was her life. Definitely he deserved all that Padma thought to herself. What she had failed to do as her mother, he had done.

He had stood by her selflessly, even when he knew she had wronged him by depriving him of his son's love. Even when he knew that she was someone else's wife. He never blamed her for anything, saying it was their destiny. And when fate had brought them back together, he showered his immeasureable love on her. Gave her every material comfort any woman would want. And above all his unfailing trust had made her overcome all her insecurities and blossom into a confident young woman. He literally worshipped the ground she walked on.

Padma decided from now on she was going to stand by her daughter, come what may. She's not going to let anyone hurt her any further. She had not opposed Anjali all this time because she didn't want her to feel that she was defending her own daughter. But here afterwards if she ever spoke rudely to Riddhima, she was going to reprimand her. Enough was enough.

Ani had woken up by the time Riddhima reached home. Armaan was trying to feed him mashed banana but the little one was asking for mama. "Abhi aa jayegi. Naha rahi hai." His dad tried to fool him. Then turning towards the bathroom door called out "Riddhima jaldi aajao. Ani betu ko bhook lagi hai" and slowly put some banana in his mouth. Riddhima stood at the door smiling at his tactics. Armaan had his back towards the door, so didn't notice her.

She was just about to enter but then decided to wash up and then go in because once Ani sees her he wouldn't let her even go to the washroom. Riddhima went into the other washroom, washed and came in. She went and put her arms around Armaan's neck from the back and and kissed his cheek. But before Armaan could kiss her back the little one sat up calling out "mama mama" and his typical crying. She picked up the kid and sat in front of armaan, leaning back on him and started feeding the baby. He put the cup down and put his arms around her waist. Putting his face into her hair he asked "itni derr kahan lagadi, tumhara laadla aadhe gante se mama, mama kar raha hai."

R: Mera ladla mama mama kyon karega? Woh to Riddhima, Riddhima karega na?

Then turning sideways, she once again kissed his cheek and asked "Agar Ani ro raha tha, to mujhe phone karna chahiye na?

A: I knew you'd be back soon that's why I didn't. Par kya baat hai, aaj bahut pyaar aa raha hai mujpar?

R: haan, to?

A: Anjie ne kuch kaha?

She turned towards him with a shocked expression and asked "Why do you think so?"

A: Because whenever she taunts your Armaan, your love for me becomes very expressive.

She shook her head and said "Nahi, tumhare bare mein kuch nahi kaha." Then she went on to tell what her di had said and what her reply had been.

A: I'm really not able to understand Anjie. Last time she was apologizing for poisoning your mind about me and was blaming herself for keeping us apart for 7 years. Now she's back to her old self.

R: She's good at heart, but it melts only when she sees me at a disadvantage. I was ill the last time when I came here and when she came to Munnar after Ani's delivery, I was weak. So she spoke very sweetly then. Now seeing me a confident and strong person, she's back to her usual habit of taunting me. But now they don't affect me as they used to earlier. Let's forget all that. This chweety pie seems to be better na? In the morning he wasn't able to even suck properly, but now he's quite comfortable.

A: Yes, I'll apply the medicine again, after he sleeps.

R: poor thing, I think it burns a lot as soon as it is applied.

A: ya, but it's effective.

R: I wonder how he caught it. Could it have at Lonavala or in the flight?

By that time the little fellow had stopped feeding and started playing. "His stomach is full now but I'm starving. Chalo let's have our dinner."

R: Main kha chuki hoon. Chalo tumhare liye khana laga deti hoon.

A: Kya?

She saw his face fall and smiled to herself.

A: Rehne do, ab khane ka mood nahi hai.

R: arrey abhi to keh rahe the bhook lagi hai.

A: no, it's ok.

As he stood up, picking Ani she hugged him from behind. Then going in front of him and pulling his cheeks asked "you believe I would eat leaving you alone?"

A: I thought maybe they forced you and you couldn't avoid.

Putting his free arm around her waist, pulled her close asking "Tum kya meri test le rahi ho?" When he kissed her cheek, the little one also leaned over from his arm and kissed her other cheek. When the adults started laughing, he also clapped his hands and started laughing.

While Riddhima unpacked and heated the food the little one was banging the spoons sitting on his dad's lap. When she served the food she offered him a piece of roti but he shook his head saying "woo" and pointing to his mouth. They felt very bad eating in front of him, when he couldn't.

Ani was much better the next day. The rash on his hand and foot had disappeared but his mouth was still a bit red. That day Riddhima coaxed Armaan to go and meet the Bashirs. Actually she also wanted to meet them but because of Ani couldn't do so. She had spoken to Devi and apologized to her that she couldn't make it.

Just as Armaan opened the door he saw a taxi stop outside. Seeing Devi and Bashir getting out he ran out to greet them.

A: I was just coming to meet you people.

B: She wanted to meet Riddhima. So we thought it was better we came over.

A: But the problem is Ani's infection is contagious. Hence we didn't want you to take the risk.

D: I'm willing to take that risk for people who gave me a new life.

By then they had walked in and Armaan called out to Riddhima. When she came downstairs to see who it was, she saw Devi holding Armaan's hands and saying "I don't know how to thank you Armaan cheta (brother)," with tears brimming in her eyes. Armaan held her hands in his and said "Devi I haven't done anything for which you need to thank me. I'm a doctor and I only did my duty, recommending the right treatment to a patient."

Hearing Riddhima, Devi went and hugged her tight. The kissing Ani's cheeks as he twisted in his mama's arms, she said "He's grown so much in these few months." Then she asked Ani "do you want to come and meet Snoopy and Droopy?" The friends chatted for sometime, had coffee and snacks and then left. Riddhima was happy she got to meet them.

Then she sentArmaan to go to Joshi house to spend sometime with them and mainly with their son. When Armaan went over, Gappu and Mini were leaving for Lonavla. Atul and Anjie were at the hospital. He took the boys along and went to drop them at the bus stop. Then after playing with the boys for an hour or so, he returned home.

On Dr. Shashank's request, Dr. Kelkar stopped by to visit Ani on her way back home. She was impressed with his speedy recovery and gave them permission to travel on Sunday.

On Sunday morning all of them returned to the Gupta house to spend sometime together. As a surprise for all of them Riddhima had single handedly prepared a nice lunch of all the south Indian dishes she had learnt from akka. Armaan had helped by bringing all the things she had listed, the previous day and keeping Ani out of her way, that morning.

The Malliks and Bua left immediately after lunch. While bidding goodbye she invited everyone to come over to Munnar. It was late evening by the time they reached their home. And weren't they glad to be back. Home sweet home.

Sorry guys, could manage to write only a short part.

Part 148

Akka and Kaka came to welcome them at the gate. Akka was extremely happy to have her "kutti paiyan" (little boy) back. She cuddled him and kissed him and he was also happily pulling her hair. But she was sad to see that he had pulled down in a week. When they told her about his infection because of which he was not able to eat properly, she became sadder still. Kaka went and brought water for all of them.

Bua stood admiring the beautiful house. And the first thing she said on entering the house was "Armaan Riddhima, tumhara ghar bahut sunder hai."

A: aur bahut lucky bhi. Humey hamari har khushi is ghar mein mili hai. Isliye main isey kareedna chaha aur luckily I was able to.

He told her how he came to get the house. Kaka asked them if they would like some coffee, but when they answered in the negative, he said "aap log fresh hokar aajao, main khana lagata hoon." Akka handed the little one to Armaan and offered to show bua the guest room upstairs.Riddhima had informed the Guptas immediately after landing that they had reached Kochi. Now, she called them up to say that they had reached home.

Meanwhile Armaan changed and washed the little one and Akshat went into his room to freshen up. When all of them came to the dining table, akka took Ani to feed him his khichdi. She was determined to get him back to normal soon. And he even ate without any fuss.

"The trip was good, but kal duty join karna hai. So boring." Armaan grumbled making a small face.

A: Mujhe bhi to school jaana hai. Pata nahi miss ne kya kya karvaya hai. Sab kuch copy karna padega. At least aap ko woh to nahi karna padega.

R: Thank God, mujhe kahin nahi jaana. Me and bua have a lot to catch up with.

Soon after dinner they all retired to bed because they had to wake up early next morning and start their routine. Bua noticed that before going to bed Akshat set his books in his bag according to the timetable and also kept his uniform ready for the next day.

A week went by. While Armaan and Akshat were away, bua and Riddhima had a lot of heart to heart chats. In the evening bua would help Akshat with his school work. Thanks to her dictating he had been able to clear the back log in a couple of days. That gave Riddhima time to read her course material which had be mailed the previous week. Then when Armaan came back from work and they would all sit in the hall. Bua would tell incidents from Riddhima's childhood which Akshat and Armaan loved to hear.

Akshat couldn't believe that his mama had been so mischievious when bua told him that as a kid she had a habit of hiding things. Once when Dr. Shashank had come to drop her at Lonavala, she asked him to stay back for a day or two. But he said he couldn't, as he had some surgeries scheduled in Mumbai. She had been very upset about it, so she hid his wallet, which had his driving licence, under her bed. So he couldn't leave that night. All the children played different indoor games and had a wonderful time with him.The next morning everyone was shocked to see the wallet on the dining table. Dr. Shashank never found how it landed there, but after he left bua cross examined Riddhima and got the truth out.

Bua enthralled them all, with many such anecdotes. One evening Akshat innocently asked his dad "dad aapke bachpan ke baare mein mujhe kaun batayega?"

A: mera koi rishtedaar nahi hai jo bata sakta hai. Shayad bi hoti to bata sakti thi.

When Akshat asked him about who was bi? He explained that she was an aunt who had brought him up, just like his athai. Akshat knew that his dada and dadi had expired in an accident, but he also knew his dad became very sad whenever he questioned him about them. So he never did. His mama also didn't seem to know much about them.

That weekend, they took bua to their favourite spot, Pothamedu. She also loved its scenic beauty. While his mama and nani were admiring the place, Akshat quietly took his dad aside to remind him that they were into December and had to plan for the event of the month. (or was it the event of the year?) They both agreed to think and discuss if they got some good ideas.

The following week was Akshat's half yearly tests. Bua loved taking up his lessons and he also found it very challenging. He had begun to love his bua nani very much because she was so affectionate and lovable. She knew what to say to make him on top of the world. She never said a harsh word and always appreciated every little thing he did. That made him even better behaved and mannered than he usually was. He tried not to lose his temper even when Ani scribbled in one of his books, saying it was his mistake to leave it where he could reach it.

Bua on her part found this child too good to be true. She had brought up so many children from so many different backgrounds, but hadn't found many like him. He had inherited the best qualities from both his parents. Both his parents were very affectionate and helpful people and he was even a step ahead of them. He was extremely understanding and cool tempered like his dad. And like his mama he was very much academically inclined, hard working and methodical in all his work. He was very rarely naughty. It was as if the things he had seen his mama go through in the first six years of his life, had made him grow up before time. He was a kid with an adult mind.

The following week the two interns from Sanjeevani arrived at MSHC, as DR. Mohan had agreed to Dr. Shashank's request. In keeping with Sanjeevani's policy it was a girl – Dia and A boy – Varun. Armaan had arranged for PG accommodation for them in his colony. Actually he had wanted to let them stay in his house itself, but bua made him understand that it would be an intrusion on their privacy. So he had done the next best thing he could, so that they could travel back and forth with him.

He had gone out of his way helping them settle down. He had taken them shopping, showed them the restaurants which served north Indian food because he knew they would soon tire if they ate only south Indian food. When bua asked him who had helped him when he shifted here, he replied that since he had lived in Chennai for 3 years before coming here, he had picked some tamil, which came handy. He had also bought a book which had translation of Hindi phrases in Malayalam.

A: I had a tough time getting people to understand me. So I want to help them. Someone coming from Mumbai will surely feel out of place here. They need friends.

"Ok, ok point taken. Help them all you want, we have absolutely no objections," joked Riddhima, but don't forget us in the process.

Riddhima kept a hawk's eye on father and son but was unable to get any hint on what the duo had planned for her birthday. Even bua seemed to be genuinely unaware of any plans. They would surely give her some surprise, she had not doubts. The evening before her birthday, when they sat chatting Armaan casually asked her "what do you want tomorrow? I thought you would prefer to have a dinner with family so I'll make reservations in your favourite restaurant. Do you want to invite any friends?"

Riddhima looked wide eyed at him and asked "what's with you Armaan? When did you become so unromantic?"

A: I'm sorry, do you want to go on a candlelight dinner with me? That's fine too. I'm sure bua won't mind.

B: Why should I mind. It's your day. Celebrate it with the person you love the most. I'll help your akka and kaka in taking care of the kids. You may not get such opportunity every year. So make the best of it when you can.

R: Candlelight dinner par to hum last year bhi gaye the. I didn't mean that.

Then she described to bua the wonderful surprise Armaan and Akshat had given her by taking her to Thekady and all the other surprises they had showered on her.

A: Riddhima, that was your first birthday after our marriage, so naturally I had to give you some surprise. Surely you are not expecting it every year. I'll never ever forget the date, that's one promise that I can make.

Riddhima was flabbergasted, she couldn't understand whether to be happy or sad. Trying to hide her disappointment she said "Nahi hum kahin nahi jayenge, ghar par hi family ke saath achchese dinner kar lenge." Armaan agreed instantly saying "Theek hai but I'll order food from outside. Just tell me what all you would like to order.
