part 14
Later that morning, Shilpa was in kitchen, cleaning after their breakfast, while Armaan was in her room, getting ready for the day, and Baby Shona was sleeping in her room. When the clock showed half past nine and the doorbell rang, Shilpa threw the rag away and stomped out the room to go answer the door.
As she opened the front door, Shilpa saw a grey haired woman, in her late 50s, smiling politely.
"Good morning. My name is Sapna Shah," she introduced herself, holding out her hand.
"Shilpa gupta," Shilpa smiled, shaking her head. "Come on in," she invited her inside and led her into the living room.
"Please, take a seat," Shilpa pointed to the couch. "Can I bring you anything before we proceed with the interview?"
Mrs. Shah shook her head, smiling politely. "No. Thank you."
"Ok," Shilpa took a seat in a chair across from her. She reached for a paper she had on the coffee table and she was ready to start speaking when Armaan walked in.
"You haven't started without me, I hope," he smiled as he made his way to Shilpa, smiling at Mrs. Shah. "You must be Mrs. Shah," he said, reaching out to shake her hand.
Mrs. Shah looked a little confused, as if she didn't expect his presence, but she stood up and shook his head. "You must be Mr. gupta," she concluded, smiling sheepishly when Armaan chuckled and Shilpa looked away embarrassed. "Or not," she said quietly, sitting back down.
"I am Armaan Malik, actually," he said and pulled a chair next to Shilpa.
Mrs. Shah smiled, visibly embarrassed with the confusion. Armaan let out another chuckle as he read the question in her eyes. "I am just the baby's best friend, to call it this way."
Shilpa cleared her throat, also uncomfortable with the situation. "Tell me some things about yourself, Mrs. Shah."
Armaan took her hand and cuddled it in his as they prepared to listen to Mrs. Shah.
"I used to work as nurse in Pediatrics at Sanjeevani and I retired two years ago," Mrs. Shah went on with the main information about her. "I have two children, grown-ups now. A boy and a girl and they're both doctors so the grandchildren for their mother are on a second plan. I think this is the reason why I want to work as Nanny. I miss having children around."
"I read in your record that you worked 30 years as nurse. How much experience do you have in Pediatrics?" Shilpa asked her.
"Nearly 15 years," Mrs. Shah answered. "Before Pediatrics I worked in the ER."
"What made you change the specialization?" she asked then.
"There was a time when the hospital confronted with a lack of staff in Pediatrics and we've been asked if we wanted to work there for a while. It was a tempting opportunity and I decided to stay there," Mrs. Shah answered.
"As you probably know," Armaan cut in. "Shilpa is a surgical resident so her schedule will be very busy in some of the days, same as mine. How much time can you spend as Nanny?" he asked Mrs. Shah.
"I didn't know that," Mrs. Shah answered frankly, but she didn't look displeased with the information. "I am a widow and I live alone, so I can spend how much time is needed. Considering that the baby is so little and she is sleeping most of the time, I could also do some housework and cooking. Knitting is not one of my favorite activities."
"That's good to know," Armaan smiled. "The baby is only 3 month old and she's not going through an easy time as she not breast feed anymore. She cries a lot and doesn't accept any milk formulas, so if you get the job, do you think you can handle this part?"
Shilpa discreetly rolled her eyes as Armaan kept asking the questions she wanted to ask. As Armaan didn't seem to let her ask anything, Shilpa just listened to them.
"Throughout my career as nurse, I faced all kind of situations and I saw a lot of behaviors at babies. All you need is patience," Mrs. Shah didn't seem to have any trouble in answering to Armaan's questions.
In that moment, they heard Shona waking up and weeping in her room. "Right in time," Shilpa smiled as she stood up. "I will be right back."
While Armaan stayed and talked more to Mrs. Shah, Shilpa went upstairs to see her baby girl. Shona calmed down and started sucking her thumb once she was in her mother's arms.
"Hey there sleepy head," Shilpa smiled and kissed her. "Mommy and Armaan are talking to a nice lady downstairs. You'd better like her as Nanny for you. She worked as nurse and she loves children. She is perfect for you, so please say yes to this one, ok?" Shona let out a yawn and kept sucking her thumb as she looked at her mother.
Shilpa carried Shona out the room and took her downstairs, where Armaan and Mrs. Shah were still talking. They stood up, smiling, when they saw them coming.
"She's the little one?" Mrs. Shah smiled as she took a step towards Shilpa.
"She is," Shilpa answered and walked over to the place she was. "Would you like to hold her?"
"Of course," Mrs. Shah smiled wider as she opened her arms to receive Shona.
Shona took the thumb out of her mouth and carefully looked at the unknown woman. "What's your name, little girl?"
"Her name is Shona," Armaan said, coming by Shilpa's side.
Baby Shona had had a hard morning and right in that moment, she wasn't in the mood for guests. Her tiny forehead wrinkled and she started crying for her mommy.
"Aww, she doesn't know me," Mrs. Shah said softly, handing the baby back to Shilpa.
Shilpa took Shona and cradled her into her arms, rocking her back and forth in attempt of calming her down. "I think she needs to have her diaper changed. I'll… call you," she said to Mrs. Shah before she walked out if the room, carrying Shona to her room.
After he walked Mrs. Shah to the door, Armaan came upstairs to talk to Shilpa. He found her in Shona's room, changing her diaper and talking to the baby. Armaan walked behind her and wrapped both arms around her, nuzzling through her hair.
"Armaan," Shilpa giggled, stepping aside.
"What?" he asked, seductively brushing his lips against her neck.
"Shona," she giggled again.
Armaan kissed her on the cheek and hugged her tightly as he propped his chin on her shoulder and smiled down at Shona. "Consider me your lucky star,"
"Get over yourself," Shilpa rolled her eyes smiling.
Armaan laughed and kissed her once more before he pulled away. He leaned his back against the table and ran his fingers through her hair.
"You didn't let me say anything," Shilpa scolded.
"Did you want to ask her more?" Armaan asked.
Shilpa rolled her eyes as she shrugged. "Not really. My point is that she came to talk to me."
"Shilpa?" Armaan asked, serious this time.
"What?" she looked at him, curios.
"I know I am not her father, but will I be allowed to get involved in her … life and education?"
Shilpa didn't answer to that and started dressing the baby. Armaan didn't like her silence, but he also understood their situation. He came by her side, brushing her hair off her shoulder, and kissed her.
"I think we found a Nanny," he said, changing the subject.
Shilpa picked Shona into her arms and just nodded, smiling at him, although not looking very excited about that.
"We found a Nanny, didn't we?" Armaan asked suspiciously. Shilpa just shrugged. "Shilpa," he sighed. "Ok, tell me why you didn't like her."
"I liked her," Shilpa muttered.
"Then?" Armaan asked, confused.
Shilpa flashed a sheepish smile before she turned her back on his, walking over to the window. "Shona didn't like her.
Armaan stared at her, dumbfounded for a moment. "Are you referring at the fact that Shona cried in her arms?" Shilpa didn't answer verbally. "Shilpa, that's so st… silly," Armaan laughed as he walked behind her. "She doesn't know her, but she could get to know her and get used with her presence. Any baby cries in a stranger's arms," he pointed out. "That's why you haven't found a nanny yet," he concluded.
"I can't let her with whosoever," Shilpa muttered, breathing her baby in.
"She won't be whoever once you get to meet her. You need to give credit to people around you. You have two weeks left until you go back to work and you still don't have a nanny for her. Shona should have started getting used to her by now," Armaan pointed out. "Are planning on taking more months of maternity leave?"
Shilpa sat down on the windowsill, gazing out the window. "I won't," she answered quietly. "I miss being in the OR. It's just…"
Armaan sat beside her and caressed Shona's head, who was dozing off. "Hard. I know."
"I will keep looking for a Nanny a few more days and if I don't find any, I will call Mrs. Shah," Shilpa concluded.
"Now I have an invitation for you," Armaan stated, smirking at her.
"What kind of invitation?" she asked him curiously.
"Invitation to a wedding," he answered.
"Whose wedding?"
"Not ours," Armaan laughed and Shilpa giggled along with him. "Dr. Rahul Grewal is getting married to our resident Dr. Anjali Joshi. I am his best man."
"And I would be?" Shilpa asked, already displeased by the idea of going to the wedding.
"My partner. This is a good opportunity to meet the people you will be working with from now on," he said.
Shilpa hesitated. "How about Shona?"
Armaan smiled and shook his head. "By that time you are supposed to have a nanny already," he reminded her. "Say yes," he gave her his best genuine smile, hoping he would convince her.
Shilpa found herself giggling like a teenager at his smile and therefore, she answered affirmative to his invitation.
"Let me put her in her bed," Armaan said, carefully sliding his hands under the baby, picking her up. He leaned down and kissed her, before he slowly put her into her crib.
Armaan turned to Shilpa then and pulled her into her arms. "I have to go to the hospital," he sighed.
Shilpa smiled, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I don't want you to go."
Armaan smiled and leaned down, softly kissing her on the lips. "I don't want either," he said and kissed her once more. "I will be back as soon as I am done there."
Shilpa nodded and reluctantly let go of him, walking together out of Shona's room. "Armaan?" she stopped him before he could walk into her bedroom. Armaan turned to her, waiting. "I want you to get involved in Shona's life," she smiled and walked past him into the bedroom, not waiting for his answer.
Armaan stayed there, smiling, until he snapped back to reality, realizing he had to get ready for the day.
