Chapter Four

The next day morning Gayatri was all set to go to her parents' house for the pag-phere rasam. She was thanking the stars that she had got this opportunity to have a private talk with her father Govind Seth. There were many things which she wanted to clarify. Ranaji would be coming to pick her up in the evening. There were many things she had to know and learn as the Queen of Amerkot.

She was closeted the entire morning along with Govind Seth. She had several questions running in her mind, "Babuji, I learnt about the truth behind our marriage from Ranaji on our first night itself. The first doubt which came to my mind was how did a strong and wealthy kingdom like Amerkot become bankrupt, so bankrupt that Ranaji had to marry me in return for the loan you gave him. You have been an old well-wisher of the Amerkot Royal family and hold the Ranaji and the late Bade Ranaji in great esteem. So you must be knowing many things I don't know. Please tell me Babuji."

Govind Seth said, "Yes. Amerkot was a very rich and powerful kingdom during the reign of the Bade Ranaji. The downslide began after his death. The royal Munshi had the habit of embezzling funds and writing wrong accounts. But he never dared to do all that during the time of Bade Raja Saab.

After his death all these affairs suddenly fell into the hands of the Rajmata who had to function as a regent for our Ranaji. She herself was passing through great personal tragedy and moreover was surrounded by enemies on all sides. A lot of funds were mismanaged during this time. Still Amerkot was one of the wealthiest kingdoms. Then Ranaji was crowned as the king after he attained the appropriate age to take care of the administration of the kingdom. He married Princess Sulakshana and became very powerful after that.

Though there were a lot of enemies, open and hidden, yet they could not do anything openly against Ranaji because of one person. That was because of one of Ranaji's closest friends and aides Prince Aditya Varma, Rani Sulakshana's cousin brother. Nothing escaped from his notice. He defeated the enemies of Ranaji in their own game. Even the British were afraid of him and did not interfere in the matters of our kingdom. He took care of all the finances and defence matters of Amerkot.

When Rani Sulakshana died, he considered it as his defeat and failure and left Amerkot.

Ranaji went to the Second World War grieving for her. In his absence matters became even worse. The British raised their taxes acrimoniously, the rains and crops failed for two continuous years. And then... "

Gayatri asked "And then Babuji... " curious to know what happened next.

Sethji continued, "The State treasury got robbed. Only I and the Rajmata know about this. That's why she had to take a loan from me to keep up the kingdom. Except for the personal wealth, palaces, lands and estates, the royal family has nothing. I'm happy that you are doing your duty as a wife and Queen properly and taking an interest in these matters. If only Prince Aditya Varma was here along with Ranaji, things would have been truly different."

Gayatri spent the whole of that day pondering over Amerkot and its future. Soon it was time for her to go. She was fully decked up and ready to go to her Ranaji's palace as a Queen. But Ranaji never came. The whole night passed just like that. Her sneering bhabis got a good opportunity of saying that indeed they were much luckier that their husbands were ordinary men and not the kings of kingdoms. Gayatri kept waiting for him near sitting on the divan near the entrance. She did not know when she actually fell asleep there itself. When she woke up, she found that somebody had covered a blanket around her. It must have been her Babuji. She was indeed very disappointed now.

It was the first time she came to her parents place after marriage, and Ranaji did not even remember that he had to pick her up in the evening. She was a simple girl who didn't want palaces or jewels to satisfy her. All she needed was a bit of care and affection. She knew that he could never love her back. But at least couldn't he even remember that she would be waiting for him.

At the palace, the Rajmata wished Ranaji when he came down for breakfast and asked, "Is Gayatri getting ready? Where is she?" That's when Ranaji realized that he had forgotten to pick up Gayatri after his busy day dealing with the problems of Amerkot. By the time he reached there, she was angry as he had expected. She answered only in monosyllables to whatever he asked her throughout the car journey. After reaching the palace, she completely avoided him for the rest of the day. He was ready for strong words and arguments but he could not bear this kind of silent treatment.

The next morning, Gayatri asked the Rajmata, "Rajmata, can I go to the Shiv Mandir at Durgapur. I have to fulfil a vow which I made before marriage there. Can I go there today?"

Rajmata replied, "It is a very difficult journey. Moreover, you have to go by boat in the last lap of your journey. The temple itself is situated in dense forest area. It is risky for you to go there."

Gayatri pleaded, "Please Rajmata. I've to do it for the well-being of Ranaji and Amerkot."

Rajmata said, "In that case Ranaji will go with you."

Gayatri said, "Rajmata, Ranaji is a very busy man. It will be difficult for him to spare time out of his busy schedule. If you feel that it would be dangerous, send some soldiers and Swarnaleka along with me. We'll manage."

Now the Rajmata understood what was the matter. Gayatri was still angry with Ranaji for forgetting to pick her up. She smiled to herself before saying, "Alright, you may go. But our soldiers and Swarnaleka will come with you."

Precap: "Somebody please save Gayatri bhabi sa. She is drowning... " . Precisely at that juncture, two men dived into the water. They brought her to the other shore when both of them simultaneously said, "Ranaji, aap?" and "Aditya, aap yahan?" before they hugged each other.
