Yep I am really happy and proud to be part of such family too... not too fimiliar with Kerala rituals hence will refrain from commenting
But wud just say one thing all rituals performed in any caste religion ultimately should b to strengthen the relationship..if that's achieved then anything is meaningful if it's not...then everything meaningless!

Very progressive thought process kudos to him...
In relation to kanyadaan... in hindu marriage as per codified law a marriage is not vslid unless saptapadi or pheras are done..then kanyadaan is also a ritual which requires to be followed one of the mandatory one...that us Hindu Codified Law as recognised by our Indian Courts...

But yes my father always says the meaning of kanyadaan is not giving aways your pride i.e; your daughter,
In my family it is believed that the major difference between other daan and kanyadaan is that in kanyadaan the father gives his daughter to someone for him to expand his family and to do homam ( pray to God through fire) as both are not possible without wife. In first case one need not explain why and in second case it is said that a bachelor , a person whose wife left him or other way round and a person's whose wife is no more cannot do homam..in my caste a man's life is incomplete without doing them...so father gives his daughter with respect to some guy with a condition to take care of her and to give her the same respect and treat her as his pride because she is helping him fulfilling his responsibilities..but father does not give away his right over his daughter...
Whereas in other daan the giver gives away complete right to the receiver.

My father even says the day either the parents or the daughter herself feels that the guy is not worth it, parents can take back their daughter with same right and respect...and the daughter can come back with same right over her parents and her house...

But it is society which changed the meaning and broke the relations saying once kanyadaan is done she becomes husband's property, but actually she becomes his responsibilities and pride but remains to be her father's right and pride...

Guys I'm really bad in writing and expressing my views so if anything goes wrong in the process of explaining ...sorry no offence...

No u made ur point very well.and I agree it's all about what u feel about the ritual and the real essence of it and what u explained is pretty much the meaning of it..

But if a ritual is being understood differently and not the way one wants it to b interpreted then to b able to question it and stand ur ground on it despite living in a society where society approval for everything is given so much importance..is a big deal.and real radical thinking I believe.
Appreciate both school of thoughts equally!

Ya radical thinking it is no doubt
Though I don't have much knowledge of law..but there was a way around that which was done..also as these days marriage registration happens also happened in this case ...law wise these r pretty much covered! That's what I think... I may not b fully right though

Yes, very thought provoking, I recently saw an article on why women are named after fathers and husbands, it was to do with the uniqueness of the "Y" chromosome and hence the Gothra, it was FB, check if you have time

genetics behind gotra systems. ...

The word GOTRA formed from two sanskrit words GAU (means cow) and Trahi (means shed). Gotra means cowshed.

Gotra is like cowshed protecting a particular male lineage. We identify our male lineage / gotra by considering to be descendants of the 8 great rishi (sapta rishi + bharadwaj rishi). All the other gotra evolved from these only.
Let's see why human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes (one from father and one from mother) on thes 23 pairs, there is one pair called sex chromosomes which decides the gender of person.

During conception if the resultant cell is XX chromosomes then the child will be girl, if it is XY then it is boy.

In XY - X is from mother and Y is from father.

In this Y is unique and it dosn't mix. So in XY, Y will supress the X and son will get Y chromosomes. Y is the only chromosome which gets passed down only between male lineage. (Father to Son and to Grandson).

Women never gets Y. Hence Y plays a crucial role in genetics in identifying the genealogy. Since women never get Y the gotra of a women is said to be of her husband.

They are 8 diff Y chromosomes from 8 rishis. If we are from Same gotra then it means we are from same root ancestor.
Marriages between same gotra will increase the risk of causing genetic disorders as same gotra Y chromosomes cannot have crossover and it will activate the defective cells.

If this continues, it will reduce the size and strength of Y chromosome which is crucial for the creation of male.
If no Y chromosome is present in this world, then it will cause males to become extinct.
So Gotra system is a method to avoid genetic disorders and attempt to protect Y chromosome.

according hindu marriage if the marriage is done in the way the caste follows it then the marriage is valid in front of the law.. not every state or religon follows saat phere..
