The worst and demeaning thing was what Shravan said. He said it makes no difference to him whether he marries Sumo or any other girl because all girls are the same and are gold diggers!

You know, i might be totally putting my foot in my mouth (old habits!) but another option could be:

Ramu pitches the "Malhotras-to-bear-shaadi expenses" line to Sumo to bait her into her self-respect jaap... And then uses that to poison Shravan's mind further, with the hope that he can still pry them apart...

But Shravan ziddi Malhotra makes other plans - court marriage - to save his papa from all the drama and Sumo's arrogance (the way he sees it)

From here starts the sasur bahu drama... After seeing Sumo's expected reaction... He coolly tells Shravan about it.. And we have our answer to why the court marriage...
