Yes her indifference had hurt then , the way she dumped him did hurt him then , but he loved her all the same , how could she possibly say 'it's over' of sorts.

He looked at her waiting , wanting like he had been for years , and she said 'it's over'
It hit him hard then, he felt vulnerable , he felt weak .

As he opened the bag that held her mother's jewelry, how could she even think he would...
Did she not acknowledge his love , his care?
Did she not remember , what he had done for her , been through for her? Did she not remember how important every word of hers was to him?

Did he not matter to her?
