This is random. But I have a genuine question.

Can someone explain to me why Indians say 'many happy returns of the day' instead of just saying Happy Birthday

No i always say Happy Birthday 😳

'many happy returns of the day' - may be it means that the day i.e., Birthday must time many many times for them 😳

No no I am indian by race. But yeah I don't use that phrase. I see Indians from India using that phrase a lot & it makes me laugh.. and I don't understand what the hell it means.

I don't think only Indians use it, it's simply a wish that this day will return for you many more times: that is, that you will have many more birthdays. So it's wishing you a long life.
