Dear Idiot Box - Here's Why I Don't Feel Like Turning You On Anymore!

Dear Idiot Box,
I used to wonder why you are termed as idiot box since long. Over the years, you have been a wonderful companion of mine especially in my drawing room. You have made me laugh, cry, understand complexities of life and gave an immense exposure to understand human emotions through the various programmes that you often air on your screen. Thank you for been so kind and still for remaining one of the cheapest source of information and entertainment in a country of billions! I am a fan of yours since those Doordarshan days who have loved you for catering shows like Hum Log, Shaktimaan, Swabhimaan, Buniyaad and what not. As time passed, the satellite channels came up and you gave us shows like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Hum Paanch and even the Balaji era of Star Plus with super hit daily soaps like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kahiin To Hoga, Kutumb or Kasauti were pretty much engaging at the time.
Indian TV - 10 Off Air Shows We Only Wish Could Come Back On TV!
Time again passed and youth channels were launched. Again, shows like Dill Mill Gayye, Sarabhai VS Sarabhai, Left Right Left, Miley Jab Hum Tum took the front seat in terms of popularity. Thank you for giving us so many memorable stories and characters with whom even our journey had been worthwhile.
TV Shows
In the past recent years also, you have delivered us with ample amount of love stories that would remain eternal for a long time. 2012 will be remembered for giving us Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (Star Plus), Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha (Colors TV), Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon (Colors TV), Punar Vivah (Zee TV), Navya (Star Plus). In the next recent few years also you kept giving us few experimental shows like Mahakumbh (Life OK), Reporters (Sony TV) and big budget rom-coms like Phir Bhi Naa Maane Badtameez Dil (Star Plus), Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan (MTV), Sadda Haq (Channel V), Beintehaa (Colors TV), Rangrasiya (Colors TV), Tu Mera Hero (Star Plus) and even heart warming family dramas like Ye Hai Mohabbatein (Star Plus), Nisha Aur Uske Cousins (Star Plus), Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi and others. These shows despite their often faulty tracks and storylines had the power to hook a viewer to its content. However, sadly, you then kept shifting to some awful content that became undeniably unbearable for a viewer like me who tends to repel from loud and unrealistic saas bahu drama and deliberate insertion of supernatural themes in family dramas.
Now, at present, when I switch on TV, all I can see is a fake Kokila's scary laugh in a weird promo of Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, or a more super weird trailer of Diya Aur Baati Hum where the family is waiting for their bride to come from Pakistan's Hyderabad thinking she is from India's Hyderabad or a more loud and repelling trailer of Sasural Simar Ka where Simar is getting ready to fight another form of daayan, naagin or black magic in her life.
Swaragini
Akshara's problems in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai are never ending and of course Swaragini cannot just survive without one week of conspiracies or ghostly activities in the show. Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani although started with a bang is now going nowhere with every other day some lady coming and trying to snatch Ranaji from Gayatri making the king look like a fool every time. Kumkum Bhagya, on the other hand, is like a David Dhawan show, it's just a show to make you laugh randomly and requires you to send your brains to vacation. Jamai Raja has the same old story repeating in various avatars with Sid trying and trying and may be will keep on trying throughout his life to please his wife and her mother and Tashan-E-Ishq of Zee TV also has no tashan or ishq left in the show. Then there are shows on &tv which I don't even know why are still running (except two exceptions of Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hain and Agent Raghav).
Coming to Star Plus again, Mere Angne Mein is all about the never ending fights between a grandmother and her grand daughter-in-law and yes, the new baby in the town, Silsila Pyaar Ka, that took a leap merely in the first two weeks, also features another too predictable and evil mother with a dumb and hot headed son of hers and has absolutely pathetic narration of story. Not to talk about the TRP ratings but this is not the kind of story that will give Star Plus an upper hand in terms of ratings over Colors or Zee TV which air Udaan and Jamai Raja at the same slot of 8:30 pm respectively.
Now for a viewer like me, what is exactly there to watch on TV currently? The two new shows launched on Zee TV and Colors namely Meri Saasu Maa and Krishnadasi attracted me. I tried to even give them a try. However, the villains of the shows are so loud and so extravagantly overwhelming that I decided to change the channel. Over the years, we, the television viewers have witnessed so many varieties of villains on small screen that believe us, these ladies or men with shrill voice, scheming expressions, deceptive thoughts and cunning attitude no longer interest us. In fact they scare us so much that we feel like running away as far as possible from them.
The only hope with which I still stare at my television set is the expectation that someday, in some channel I will get a show that will be worth watching. Waiting for Star Plus' two shows Tamanna and Dehleez and Colors' Kasam to unfold their storyline. With the hope that at least these three shows might be worth of our time. And yes, among the youth shows, Lost Boy Productions' Nadaan Parindey that's yet to finalise its cast can also be a good watch providing the show will be based on the life of a rockstar. The concept is something that for sure at least sounds attractive. Let's hope that some like minded people do come up with shows that will not make TV look so dull as it is now in the coming months.
