Her clothes are an eyesore, no doubt. But maybe it's part of the characterization. She's conservative and old-fashioned in her tastes. The contrast with her husband is the main reason why he doesn't value her.

I do not think she is conservative and old fashioned. Actually her parents house people are more liberal and modern so she is. Before marriage she was wearing simple chudidar. But lately her sarees are too bright. It does not go with her age. She definitely needs better wardrobe .

she needs to wear sarees like that pink one she wore to the date, the ther sarees just look too busy.

She herself told Mohan that she's not old fashioned. The CVs sometimes seem to forget this. (Though other times they impress me--Kastur and Mohan's drinking, from the way she first asked him to the way she just calmly asked him to try to stop drinking, while trying to help him deal with his hangover, and get ready.)
