This is one aspect of Rama that's actually shown correctly, the other being them not showing Vishnu/Lakshmi in Ksheersagar/Vaikuntha when they show Rama/Sita in Ayodhya/Mithila. Rama was not aware that he was Vishnu's avatar, and that was essential if he were to kill Ravan. Ravan's boon included immunity from Vishnu, so had Krishna, as opposed to Rama, confronted Ravan, he could not have killed him, due to this condition.
This is one aspect of the Ramayan that to date, I've only seen Valmiki, and maybe Krittivas, get right. Everybody else - from Vyasa onwards - takes their own visions of Vishnu and back-projects it onto Rama. For instance, in Valmiki, all 4 brothers were Vishnu avatars only as a result of that payasa being divided. However, in Vyasa's works and beyond, he makes Lakshman Sesha-nag (similar to Balarama) and Bharat & Shatrughan Vishnu's accessories. Which is as imaginative as the DkDM stories they're showing us now. Similarly, a lot of other stories in other epics, like Tulsidas, assume Rama to be all knowing, which he actually wasn't.
In fact, that was the whole point of Brahma's appearance b4 Rama after Sita's agni-praveshna. It was he who revealed to Rama that he was Vishnu's avatar, and that Sita was Lakshmi (no mention there of Lakshman being Sesha-nag). While Rama may have been more conscious of his divinity following that incident, he clearly had no idea about that aspect before Ravan was killed. So that's one aspect of the story that they're showing accurately.
