Hi all! I just came across this Sloka and thought I'll share it. Sorry if posted.
This sloka displays the Unity of Shiva and Vishnu (well, at least both are in the same sloka):
Gaveeshapatro Nagajaartihaari
Kumaarataatah Shashikhandamaulih|
Lankesha Sampoojita Paadapadmah
Paayaadanadih Parameshvaro Nah||
Meaning:
May the Lord who rides a bull, who dispelled the troubles of Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya Mountain, the father of Kumara (Kartikeya), one who has a crescent moon on his hair, the one whose lotus feet are worshipped by Lankesha (Ravana), the one without a beginning, the Supreme Lord protect us.
Word to word:
Gaveesha Patro - Gaveesha - the bull Lord Nandi; Patro - vehicle
Nagaja Aartihaari - Nagaja - daughter of the Mountain; aarti - trouble; haari - dispeller
Kumaara Taatah - Taatah - father
Shashikhanda - Crescent Moon
Maulih - Hair Locks (Jata)
Sampoojita - worshipped
Paadapadmah - Lotus Feet
Paayaat Anadih - Anaadih - without beginning; Paayaat - Protect (I think)
Parameshvaro - the Supreme Lord
Nah - us
Now, if we remove the first letter of each word, it becomes:
Veeshapatro Gajaartihaari
Maarataatah Shikhandamaulih|
Kesha Sampoojita Paadapadmah
Yaadanadih Rameshvaro Nah||
Meaning:
May the rider of Garuda, who dispels the fear of Gajendra, the father of Kamadeva, who has a peacock feather in his hair, and whose lotus feet are worshipped by offering hair (in Tirupati), the one without a beginning, who is ever ready to save his devotees, the Lord of Lakshmi, protect us
Word to Word:
Veesha - Vi - bird; Isha - overlord; the Overlord of Birds i.e. Garuda
Gaja - elephant
Maara - Kamadeva
Shikhanda - peacock feather
Kesha- hair
Yad - the one who is always rushing here and there (to save his devotees)
Rameshvaro - the Lord of Ramaa (Lakshmi)
The rest of the words are same as above.
So in this way, it shows the unity between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva
