Angiras (???????, pronounced as "?ngir?s"; nominative singular Angira - ??????, pronounced as "?ngira:") is a rishi (or sage) who, along with sage Atharvan, is credited to have formulated ("heard") most of the fourth Veda called Atharvaveda. He is also mentioned in the other three Vedas. Sometimes he is reckoned as one of the Seven Great Sages, or saptarishis of the first Manvantara, with others being, Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vashishtha ^[1] Bharadwaja maharshis was his descendant. .

His wife is Surupa and his sons are Utatya, Samvartana and Brihaspati. He is one of the ten Manasaputras (wish-born-son) of Lord Brahma. Other accounts say that he married smrithy, the daughter of Daksha.^{[citation needed]}

The name Angirasas is applied generically to several Puranic individuals and things; a class of Pitris, the ancestors of man according to Hindu Vedic writings, and probably descended from the sage Angiras. In theRigveda, Agni is sometimes referred to as Angiras or as a descendant of Angiras (RV 1.1). In the Rigveda, Indra drives out cows from where they had been imprisoned by either a demon (Vala) or multiple demons (the Panis) and gifts them to the Angirasas (RV 3.31, 10.108 and a reference in 8.14). Mandala 6 of the Rigveda is attributed to a family of Angirasas.

Lord Buddha is said to be a descendant of Sage Angirasa in many Buddhist texts.^[2] Scholars like Dr. Eitel connects it to the Rishi Gautama.^[3] There too were Kshatiryas of other clans to whom members descend from Angirasa, to fulfill a childless king's wish.^[4]

The seven great Rishi or saptarshi of the first manvantara are Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vashishtha. In other manvantara there are other sapta-rshi. In the present manvantara the seven are Kashyapa, Atri, Vashishtha, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, Bharadvaja. To the Rishi the Vedas were revealed. Vyasa taught the Rigveda so revealed to Paila, the Yajurveda to Vaishampayana, the Samaveda to Jaimini, Atharvaveda to Samantu, and Itihasa and Purana to Suta. The three chief classes of Rishi are the Brah-marshi, born of the mind of Brahma, the Devarshi of lower rank, and Rajarshi or Kings who became Rishis through their knowledge and austerities, such as Janaka, Ritaparna, etc. Thc Shrutarshi are makers of Shastras, as Sushruta. The Kandarshi are of the Karmakanda, such as Jaimini.

ANGIRA RISHI and SRADDHA DEVI (SUROOPA)

ANGIRA is also known as ANGIRAS RISHI and His descendants are AANGIRASAS. ANGIRAS is one of Nine NAVA BRAHMAS and one of Seven SAPTHA RISHIS. ANGIRA RISHI is a GOTHRA KARTHA with Three Rishis – THRAYAA RISHEYA -- AANGIRASA, BAARHASPATHYA, and BHAARADWAAJASA. AANGIRASAS are Preceptors of ATTHARVA VEDA.

ANGIRA married SRADDHA DEVI d/o KARDAMA and DEVAHOOTHI.

AADI PARAA SAKTHI manifested to ANGIRA as PRATHYANGIRA DEVI.

ANGIRA and SRADDHA have Three Sons all Three Gothra Karthas in their own Right -- UTHADDHYA , BRIHASPATHI ( GURU or JUPITER), SAMVARTHANA. ANGIRA's Grand Son is BHARADWAAJA RISHI. When once AGNI DEV went on strike , ANGIRA took over the duties of AGNI DEV and since then ANGIRA RISHI is also known as AGNIVASYA. Notable RISHIS that belong to ANGIRA GOTHRA include GAUTHAMA, AATHMABHUVA , AUSANA , PURUKUTSA and VAAMADEVA. RISHI GOTHRA PRAVARA I can be any one of Two types:-
1. VAMSA PRAVARA down the progeny of RISHI or
2. SISHYA PRAVARA amongst RISHI's Students.
