A Fear of Rain

He sat in the char across from her highness, the Rajmata of Jaigard ' or as he had fondly known her all his life, Dadi Sahib. While to the world she was a strong ruler and regal woman, to him she had been a loving and encouraging grandmother. Though they were not related by blood, he felt a connection to her that he felt to no one else. Sure, he had his own family, yet still he didn't feel that bond. He had a father, who though was loving, had always kept his children at arms length. He had a sister, and he loved her more then he cared to admit but he protected her and looked after. It was only Dadi Sahib that protected and looked out for him. Perhaps that is why he felt such a strong connection to the woman whom he considered to be the closest thing to a mother he'd ever know.

"Uday beta," he heard her calling to him.

"Ji Dadi Sahib..." he responded breaking from his trance to once again focus on the older woman in front of him.

"Uday beta, hum aapse kuch pooch rahe hai," she said.

"Maaf kijiyehga Dadi Sahib, pata nahin humara dhiyan kahaan chalagaya," he admitted.

He sat up straight in his chair and took a sip of the hot coffee that he'd been sipping during his meeting with Dadi Sahib.

"Haan toh aap kya pooch rahe the?" he asked.

"Hum yeh pooch rahe the ke iss plan se kya aapke maan mein koi daar hai?" Dadi Sahib asked while she leaned back against her plush chair.

The corner of his lip twitched up into a grin as he fought hard not to laugh.

"Dadi Sahib," he began as he got to his feet after putting down the coffee cup. "Hum Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh hai, aur hum kissi se ya kissi bhi baath se nahin daarte."

He knew that confidence and pompousness was dripping from every word he uttered, but he didn't care. He knew that as the crown prince of Devgard, there was nothing and no one he feared. There wasn't one situation that he wasn't ready for. There wasn't one battle he wasn't prepared for. There wasn't anything that could rattle him. He knew his destiny, he knew his purpose and he knew his path ' there was nothing to be afraid of.

He walked over to Dadi Sahib and bent down to take her blessing, ready to commence the last part of their plan of turning the chawl Moniya into Princess Manyata of Jaigard. As he stood up again, there was a rumble from the heavens before the sudden pitter patter of rain drops were heard against the palace windows.

"Lagta hai ke koi tufaan aane wala hai," Dadi Sahib commented as she looked past Uday's shoulder.

"Hum tufaano se bhi nahin daarte," Uday commented before bidding adieu to his grandmother.

Uday was walking from Dadi Sahib's study, passing the large windows in the halls of the palace when something caught his eye. He turned his head to look through the window but couldn't see anything clearly due to the rain falling against the window. From where he stood all he could see was a faint splash of white surrounded by gloomy and dull colors. A frown pulled his eyebrows together as he made his way to the window to see what it was that was catching his attention. His anger level increased just a smidge when he realized that the windows were far too thick to see out into the courtyard of the palace garden.

He had decided to forget it and just leave but once again, as he walked down the corridor, the brightness of the white caught his attention. Not being able to stop himself for some reason, Uday found his way to the large doors that led to the balcony which over looked the palace garden.

The speed of the rain had seemed to slow down just as he stepped outside. He looked to find what he had seen but to his shock he saw nothing. He was just about to go inside, thinking that he must have just seen flashes of lightning, when a sound caught his attention. He stopped dead in his tracks as he registered that the sound he was hearing was actually someone giggling. Turning back to face the garden, his eyes fell on something completely unexpected.

There in the courtyard, behind a hedge, stood Manyata giggling as she played with a small rabbit. She stroked its head a few times before kissing it and letting it go find shelter from the rain. As she stood up, the rain suddenly picked up speed.

Uday watched, mesmerized, as Manyata spread out her arms as if waiting to hug the dark skies. She let the drops of water splash all over her. Before he knew it, she was twirling in the rain. It was then that he noticed she was wearing white. She was dressed in a white anarkali suit, simple yet elegant. As the rain continue to fall and she continued to get drenched, Uday couldn't help but notice how the now soaked garment stuck to her body like second skin. The sleeves became translucent and he could see her creamy skin. The bodice of her suit clung to her accentuating her curves in all the right places.

Though he tried, he couldn't stop his eyes from gazing over the curve of her shoulder or the dip of her hips. Though he tried, he couldn't stop his eyes from gazing over the lusciousness of her chest.

Uday felt the heat rush to his face as he mentally chided himself for behaving like a hormonally charged teenage boy when he was anything but that.

Again he tried to look away ' step away even ' but he couldn't do either. He found himself lost in a daze as he took in the figure that danced below him in the garden.

It had been about two months since the training classes had begun. It had been two months filled with changes. The once loud and obnoxious Moniya was now a soft spoken and well mannered Princess Manyata. The once sweet and bubbly Moniya was now a guarded and respectful Princess Manyata. However, every now and then, Uday would catch a glimpse of the old free spirit that Manyata used to be.

He recalled the conversation he'd just had with Dadi Sahib about fear. He only now realized that he'd done something moments ago that he had never done in his entire life ' he had lied to Dadi Sahib. He claimed that nothing scared him yet here he was, fear gripping every fiber of his body.

All due to the girl that danced in the rain.

He watched her silently.

This time, just like it did every other time, he felt his heart suddenly begin to beat faster. He felt his palms become sweaty and his breathing pick up just a tad bit faster. As he looked at Manyata he felt emotions run though his veins that he had never felt before. He felt the need to protect her, not from the world but from himself. If he were to ever hurt her he didn't know what he'd do to himself. He felt the need to adore her not only for who she was now but who she had been in the past. He felt the need treasure her not only because she was the Princess of Jaigard but because she was his Princess.

But what scared him most was his need to love her. He had a burning desire to love her not because it was what she deserved and not because it was what everyone expected. What scared him the most is that he wanted to love her ' he needed to love her ' because she resided in his heart. A heart he was sure was made of coal. A heart he was sure cold and empty.

He was scared of the person he was becoming, for Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh was fast disappearing and a commoner Uday was emerging. His once dormant heart was beating. His once cold heart was filled with warmth from her presence. He was loosing his tight grip on a reality he knew as it was being replaced by a reality he was scared to face. The walls he'd built around his heart had begun to crack the day he'd spotted her the club with that scar on her back. He'd tried to put them back up but to no avail. As he stood watching her, he could hear that wall fall apart brick by brick.

Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh who had been scared of nothing was now scared of so many things. He was scared of reality, he was scared of love. Most of all, he was scared of Manyata ' his Princess. She made him feel, she made him care, she made him trust and she made him love.

A flash o f lightning and a clap of thunder brought him back from his trance. Blinking once, then twice, his foggy vision cleared and focused on the girl dancing in front of him in the rain. He stepped back into the palace, closing the doors in front of him in an attempt to push the pictures of her out of his mind. It took every ounce of his will power to walk away and not rip those doors open again just to get another glimpse of Princess Manyata ' his Princess.

As he raced through the palace he paid no attention to the calls he heard. He had to get out of there or else he'd be lost forever. He stepped out into the rain and flinched as the drops of water hit his face. Closing his eyes he angled his head up towards the heavens letting the heavens release their fury on him.

It was at the moment that he realized that Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh was scared of the rain. Not because of what it was but what it did to him. From here on out he'd dread the blazing lightning, the roar of thunder and the purity of rain because it would remind him of only one thing ' Manyata.

Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh feared the rain because it would only remind him of the hold his Princess had on his body, mind and soul. Yuvraj UdayVeer Singh feared the rain because it would only remind him of the hold his Princess had on his heart.
