I am a believer in a mix of both. Trying to achieve a goal within the constraints of our circumstances, luck and capabilities.

There is much argument on Free Will vs Determinism.

We have to take steps now to move forward. The future is a product of current sacrifice and effort is required on our part to pluck the fruits that grows in our garden.

In-determinism (free will) till an observation is made. Determinism (karma/causality) after an observation is made. Both (superposition) when no observation has been made.

Action is free will. Consequence of action is karma.

Yes it does seem that way, both the obstacles along the way and the so called lucky breaks are the results of our current and past actions. Unless, of course, the recommendations of the Gita is followed ie not seeking the fruits.

But in carrying out our "actions" we have some choices that will shape our future.

So what do you mean by observation ? gaining awareness, acquiring knowledge or looking deeper ?

But in waking the dream is gone and there must be effort put in to wake up. If not, the dream will persist.

How is not seeking the fruit gonna affect karma? If I study I get the result I deserve . My seeking it or not seeking the result is not going to affect the result, is it?

Observation of events!

What goes on in the universe is a fundamental interaction between subatomic particles. What goes on is events. Since we experience time as a unidirectional flow, we observe cause and effect within these events. Without such observation, all that will remain is a bunch of interactions. But again, without observation, there might not be those particles in the first place.

In the Gita it speaks of selfless action and surrendering the fruits of our action to the Lord.

Basically, karma binds us whether it is good or bad actions done by us.

Our minds create attachments and that is what causes problems, but attachment to the Lord frees us from worldly bondage. Chapter 3 of the Gita dwells on Karma.

It is said that at the moment of death if we remember the Lord, we get salvation. Our mind thinks of whatever is dearest to us, in most cases it could be wealth or other worldly attractions.

Observation of events!

So observation is akin to mindfulness or right understanding in Buddhism ? Or is observation a stage of development and higher understanding because much of all that is going on happens without our being aware.

Let me ponder a bit more and see the link between observation and free will.

The answer really depends on how you define "free will", one's own choices or determined by preceding causes and conditions like all things in the world...

Does anyone really have free will, aren't we all imprisoned by limiting thoughts and beliefs...
