Honestly something like this or the one prior about graduation I don't find offensive or demeaning at all: It's a fact. Stats don't lie- being a teen mom/parent isn't roses and butterflies- perhaps that's the point- if it's socially and culturally ingrained into your mind at a young age that this social act is NOT a norm and isn't and will not be an ideal, perhaps run of the mill maybe teens will THINK about safe-sex or abstinence.

I have to yet watch the video you posted but I think there's a very big difference between these two print PSAs and people verbally insulting and shaming teen parents. This is no different then a poster about healthy eating with some other witty byline.

See, I don't know how a teen parent feels when they see this on the subway. Surely, I don't find it offensive because it doesn't target me or question my choices. But, it does target them. It is safe to assume they may feel bad. Some may even be offended. I simply cannot assume their perspective. But, I have seen some teen parents comment (opinion pieces) on how much they are shamed. As far as NYC is concerned, the health department takes the same "shaming" approach (as it is commonly called) to everything from drinking & partying to binge eating and teen pregnancy.
The video is some hot headed conservative who speaks in secondary schools where she is cordially invited by the district. Talk about the lack of sex ed.

Teen mums are often stereotyped and they do get the odd dissapproving look when they go out in the street. Everyone presumes young teens who get pregnant are single, gonna be living off benefits for the rest of their lives and are unable to look after a young child as they are still 'kids' themselves. I really think it is not the best idea if it can be avoided though, meaning that it hasn't happened already on accident.

Well, birthcontrol and better understanding of how it is used should be taught at schools, I think. Contraceptives should be made just like candy: Cheap and plentiful. Making them subsidized would help.
Speaking of, DOJ will FINALLY be signing the documents that make Plan B available to all ages.
If I ever know a teen parent, ofcourse I wouldn't suggest abortion but maybe the baby can be put up for adoption as it is in his own interest cause it is almost impossible for a teen to get a comfortable job and home to provide for a child with out nearly killing themselves trying and I think that these things should be accomplished before having a baby not because they had a baby. 😳
I really can't understand how so many youngsters are getting pregnant these days, but also I think that once it happens it's their responsibility to take care of and raise the child to the best of their ability. I will fully support them if they are willing to give the baby their best. I won't ever look down on a person for wanting to take care of their baby despite what they will have to go through to do it.

Lack of options when it comes to sex ed is the problem. Some places are still stuck on the abstinence only track. Atleast give em some options.

I think it inadvertently targets them. They can't do anything about teens who are ALREADY parents. That's not their purpose. their purpose is to PREVENT teens from getting pregnant. To get that 13 year old thinking about it- seed it into the back of their minds. It's not like weight loss or healthy eating lifestyles- it's not you can backtrack on. I think it's more about prevention and forethought, and it is in all honesty thought provoking: Sure, there will be a teen parent who sees it and might have their sentiments get wounded- but there are two streams of thought- one can look at it and feel slighted, where as the other might say "My Child will NOT be this statistic" It's simply a matter of perspective and the path one chooses. They can't undo having their child- but they can take the time and energy to raise them.

I'm not familiar with NYC and it's health department- but I think shamming is a life long tool used by many individuals- it can work but like everything else in life is not full proof 😆

The Candies Organization is IINM, based in the US and targeting American teens. Primarily because America DOES have a very high teen pregnancy rate- I don't blame them for this fear instilling tactic- but I don't think it's the answer. They have southern states that simply don't believe in teaching Safe Sex and are ignoring the other side of the issue- prevention- instead they're ignoring it and pretending their teens aren't having sex as if that grandchild came from immaculate conception
-____-
Canada, has a very different approach- we have our teen parents but the rate is much lower (even when you scale the population difference) and we do have SexEd- perhaps the Atlantic is a bit more conservative, but overall I don't think it's the highest social issue on the country's radar.

Yes sex education helps and the law should also step in to prevent teens from engaging in sex at an early age.
Recently here in Singapore over 30 people were jailed for having sex with a teen prostitute below the age of 17; eventhough they claimed they were unaware of ther age.

I don't think the state can police what consenting teens do in the back of their Chevy truck, or in their bedrooms when parents are out of the house. It's next to impossible and unrealistic.

teen prostitution- and prostitution as a whole- as well as the making and distributing of child po*nography are very different social spheres from two consenting teenagers having sex.

well I have nothing much to add except...
this is going to sound like a total brag and it is. we, in Canada, do not consider one religion to dictate ALL people even if they don't follow that religion. so, we give people options. I simply cannot swallow abstinence only. people need options.

Statistics in US suggests adolescent pregnancy results in adverse socioeconomic impact on mother, father and child. They are less likely to receive high school diploma, higher chances of living in poverty and receive public assistance for longer periods. In addition they report higher risk for domestic violence. Children are more likely to have health and cognitive disorders and to be neglected/abused. I don't think encouraging abstinence would lead to any long term change in teen pregnancies. Education/counseling should be more for safe/protected sex and adolescents should be encouraged to focus on higher education/ stable career.

Interesting topic, will come back with detailed POV on this..

but one question if I may add...

The moment you give special facilities to any group .. ( teen moms in this case and lets say school facilities)... essentially you are sending out a signal that we will support you..

That, ( this is me thinking aloud, don't know how it really works)... wouldn't that actually make teen moms not be averse to early pregnancy because they know they will get all the support required.. Now that would be sad rt?
