It is the people who have money, or are trying to get vast amounts, who have the power to use it for good or bad, not the money itself. At the heart of this dilemma is the emotion of greed.
Desperately trying to gain financially can lead people to behave in extraordinary ways that can damage others and lead to misery. Actually having money is not a bad thing at all. Its more about how you gain it in the first place and then how you use it.
Money can help to save lives. Sharing money and spending it on medical equipment, charities and in other ways to help people can make money more valuable than it is materialistic.
In relationships money issues can often cause arguments and disagreements. Money related stress in marriage can lead to separation and divorce if not handled well.
People with money can inadvertently harm others by investing in areas of human exploitation. With money comes responsibility but lack of financial education can lead to poor financial decision making. In this way money could be described negatively, but again it is the person in charge of it who ultimately causes the undesirable affect.
We are all striving to make money to cover our needs, but how much money is enough? Fear of not having enough can drive people to become workaholics. Their home-lives and families suffer as they miss out on experiences and personal events in-order to make more and more money.
When a person is a workaholic they can also develop stress related symptoms that can lead them to an early grave. They are so fearful of not having their bank balance grow at a high rate that they neglect their physical and emotional health.
Money is just an object. It has no emotions or preferences. We are in charge of how we react to it and how we let it affect our lives.
It may also be true to say that evil can occur even when no money is involved. Many murders, rape and other dreadful crimes are generally unrelated to money issues. The root of evil in such cases may sometimes stem from mental illness, emotional disturbance and inner power struggles, which incidentally, you can't even pay to get rid of.
Here, the word evil itself may even be in question if we are to believe that people who commit such crimes are sick. If we are to believe that true evil exists as an entity itself which can control others then we render ourselves vulnerable and lacking in autonomy as the human race and as individuals. If we are able to say that we are in control of our own actions, instead of putting them down to evil forces controlling us, then we give ourselves the power to decide how to behave.
Therefore when it comes to the idea of money being the root of all evil I am left to conclude that the word evil is being used as a blanket term to describe poorly chosen behavior by those with money who use it to hurt and to control others.
