my dad is really dark and my mom is almost pale white, she's one of those rare indian exeptions of having really really fair skin. My dad was very rich and my mom's family was very poor, and the only reason my dad married her was because she was very fair. Dont get me wrong, they are completely in love now but i think they got married to each other for the wrong reason.

My mom is fair and my dad is medium! I have fair skin, but sometimes I love to get an airbrush tan for glowing golden glow! My auntie starts complaining that no Indian Guy likes dark skin, I am like whatever! SkIn color shouldn't be emphasized so much! It is ridiculous! I have a cousin with darker complextion and everyone is always comparing us! She is younger than me, and she is always so upset and morose over her skin color! I tell her it sucks to have fair skin so she feels better! She doesn't have a problem with her skin color but everyone else does! I am so mad at this! We need to get rid of this stupid and meaningless custom! Beauty is only skin deep!

All of u have given very interesting responses. I agree with most of you.
I will focus on the media and advertisements because the image and message that is dished out by them has in a way perpetuated a sterotype of fair skinned people getting ahead in life.
I was surprised to see a company from the western world LOreal also come up with their range of fairness products, they too gave in too the commercial interests and have perpetuated a sterotype that fairness has to be achieved at all costs.
A popular fairness cream advert has a lady becoming an airhostess only after she uses a fairness cream.
There is no talk of talent or personality but emphasis on colouring.
The term wheatish complexion is a veryIndian, it was basically an improvement from the brown and bronze skin that is not liked in our society.

i agree wid hazelgirl, boys should care about da unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit inside them rather than their complexion, that what i read in books (religious ones)😉😃

its sad that in india the tag of beautiful and pretty seem to sort of go along with "fair" as if only such a package deal is acceptable. my dad was dark and mom very fair (almost as pale as a ghost we used to pull her leg) and i am somewhere in between and from the time i remember people were like "how sad, u dont have u'r moms complexion". and to make things better my younger brother was fair. so it went on to be "how sad, u'r girl is so dark and u'r color has all gone to the boy". thanks to the comments of these "well wishers" i devpd such a complex that i was almost painfully shy. now as an adult i realize that to people who really care it doesnt matter what color i am and that has made me realize that i shuldnt give too much thought to this. life is too short to worry about whether u r "wheatish" as opposed to "riceish" i guess 😆
