I am not Indian so I just had a question.

Are there actually no shoes allowed in dance forms like bharatnaytam or kathak? What if someone is dancing on a devotional song like deva shree ganesha from agneepath. Could someone explain to me, is it because the shoes are disrespectful to God? Could someone explain the history to me please I really want to know.
My dance school is planning a dance carnial and there is a team performing on Deva Shree Ganesha, but I noticed they WILL be wearing shoes...Is that acceptable? Their performing at a concert hall. Should I tell them not to do that?

As far as I know, shoes are a big NO for Indian classical dances. Same goes with devotional acts. It's this simple. People don't wear shoes inside a temple or anytime they are praying. I have never seen anyone do a classical dance with shoes. That is considered disrespect for dance. Like you said, it is basically the respect you give to the art form. I don't know the history behind but I can for sure say that shoes are not allowed for classical or devotional acts.

completely agree here..in case planning to do an indian dance on a devotional song..then no shoes allowed 😊 reason being its disrespectful towards god..this is true even when indians visit temples or do puja (worship) at home as well..

Bindu is right. In Indian culture, usually we do not wear our shoes in and near holy places so devotional song , no shoe. Classical dances also originated from devotional need initially, even now before doing a proper classical act, one devotional act is done.

However, if your friends want a logical explanation, here it goes. unlike ballet, where toes must be pointed all times or ballroom where you need heels for balance , posture, The postures of Indian classical dances are developed such that for the stance and the balance you need to keep your feet grounded. also there are lots of movements which involve fingers of the feet. Hence shoes are not allowed.

wearing shoes during Indian classical is not something i am used to atleast, however, socks during rehearsals are okay, specially when its cold . during performance its better to leave out shoes or socks.

By the same rule Indians when they perform on Ball room or Latin dance must wear shoes..Only contemporary is done w/o shoes. Not wearing proper shoes for the dance forms is also an insult to the dance form itself IMHO.😳
All Indian classical forms are done w/o wearing shoes.
Folk dance can be done wearing soft shoes...I dont see anything wrong with that..
My 2 cents..

exactly exactly and also not invent excuses for not wearing shoes and not using odious props that hinder the dance.
