Fleming quits as Kiwi ODI skipper

Reuters | Posted Apr 25, 2007 at 04:13 | Updated Apr 25, 2007 at 04:32

Jamaica: Stephen Fleming quit as New Zealand's one-day captain on Tuesday after his side's crushing World Cup semi-final defeat by Sri Lanka.

Fleming, 34, has led the side for 10 years and wants to stay as test captain and continue playing limited overs internationals as a batsman.

"I want to keep on playing but I'm standing down as captain of the one-day side," he told a news conference.

"Every win was celebrated. The tournament wins were very special. I think we do damn well with what we have got."

Fleming has served as skipper for three World Cups, reaching two semi-finals.

But New Zealand have never reached the World Cup final and have now lost five semi-finals in nine tournaments following Tuesday's 81-run loss.

"I'm not sure there was much more we could have done. As far as planning goes, we were extremely clear in our minds what we wanted to do," Fleming added.

i think that fleming was a great leader for the Kiwis, but i guess sumthing was missing that made fleming take such a step... but he has done a great job wid the New Zealanders, the Kiwis really achieved a lot wid him thru out the years... at the end, its good to hear that he still desires to be a part of the odi team despite stepping down as a captain!

i feel bad that he had to quit at such a stage... i have always liked him as a captain, as i have always seen him wud the right spirit, and we all know that hes a fantastic player along wid that! but hope he keeps on playing at his level best wid the bat, hes too good of a player and haslifted the kiwis to a very high position in world cricket! 👏

awwwwwwwww he was my all time favourite captain . People in the cricketing world beleived he was the best captain of modern cricket and its sad that NZ couoldnt go to the finals under his captaincy . I will always remember him as a great captain who was innovative and imaginatie in his captaincy.all the best to him .

I am sure that now he would do great justice to his batting .
