Friends an interesting article

Will a new slew of shows bring something fresh to TV?

The world of Indian TV soaps is raising a duststorm. Not of controversy this time but the honest dust of frenetic activity.

Soap operas, as studies and common observation will attest, are addictive affairs.

It is a large but rather particular audience — usually female though not exclusively so; these are people with the time and mindspace to spare for the concerns of other people, be they ever so fictional. A good soap extends beyond the half hour that is spent in front of the television — a good story fills the crevices between chores, engages the mind and heart when they are not needed elsewhere. Favourite soaps are habits; not to have the next fix when it is habitually due can be disturbing to the rhythm.

I say all this to place in context the consternation of soap-viewing audiences given the ongoing changes in viewing patterns. To begin with, the past few months have seen the closure of a number of old regulars. The biggest wrench of all surely must be Star Plus's Bidaai. It ran for three years and, while it achieved high TRPs for most of its tenure, it garnered a heart-warming popularity that can't be measured by numbers alone. On the youth-oriented Star One, two long-running programmes — Dill Mill Gaye and Miley Jab Hum Tum — have been pulled off. Naturally, there have been replacements. Star One has three new shows including Ekta Kapoor's vampire love story Ye Pyaar Ki Ek Kahaani. Bidaai has given way to the rather interesting and faintly magical Gulaal, which, to my mind, is quite the only one capable of adequately filling the gap its predecessor left behind.

What this means for the soap watcher is that, apart from missing her old staples, suddenly she finds herself in a completely new landscape — milieux that she isn't too familiar with, several characters she has not invested in, and fresh relationships that don't yet have an emotional connect.

Then, the industry must needs make alterations as well. A few months ago, Star Plus elongated viewing hours with new shows at 11pm and 11.30pm — late night slots that allow them to be more 'bold'. Then, to the astonishment of many, a series called Saathiya that airs at the early hour of 7pm stumbled into the top ten. You could hear the wheels turning. If sufficient numbers were tuning in at seven, could they be persuaded to reach for the remote earlier still? Zee TV is now trying that: two new serials from this week to kick off the evening's television viewing from 6pm. If the idea takes, it won't be very long before other channels follow. So, all taken, viewers have a potential six hours of fresh content and that's without counting afternoon soaps, promiscuous channel-hopping and repeats. What's more, Star One has decided to push the programming envelope in another dimension. Their five soaps will air not five but six days of the week, by co-opting Saturdays into the 'soap week'.

For our soap watcher, these are hours and slots she wasn't used to, these are new habits she needs develop if she wishes to scope out her options. These shows aim, not at bringing in fresh audiences, but at reining in the same existing ones. How long before fatigue kicks in? Besides, to what end, if the content isn't good enough and will only end after short flailing bursts?

Women rule prime time in India — on the screen and in the drawing rooms where they are received. But might this extensive programming threaten that? A family that is resigned to let soaps dominate during prime time will be less inclined to relinquish the remote for marathon sessions, five/six days a week. Will these adjustments serve to increase soap viewing or audiences? More importantly, does this slew of soaps bring anything fresh by way of attitudes or narratives? It is too soon to tell — but whether these strategies sink or swim, they're working up a fine lather.

thanks for sharing this interesting article chalhov.... agree with each and every line writthen by the editor....... ok so if 6-7 pm time slot works for zee then surely other channels will follow the same. similarly if the 11-11.30 pm time slot works out for star plus then surely colors will follow it.. dont know abt zee as it always thinks differently in a way to lose viewership..... OMG! all the time slots are filled up the dramas then just imagine the condition of women. just sit glued to this idiot box and enjoy the drama let it be the one carrying logical or illogical concepts......

Chalhove found an article that is similar to the one that you posted.....only in this when they have credited CB for starting this non-traditional prime time viewing. Articles like this makes me wonder that only Zee and DJs know the art of killing th goose that lays golden eggs.

India's top Hindi entertainment show is at 7 pm

(11 December 2010 8:30 pm)

MUMBAI: India's top Hindi entertainment show is coming at the 7 pm slot.

In the last two months, Star Plus' 7 pm show Saathiya has shown tremendous climb in its ratings with the figure rising to an average of 6 TVR for the week ended 4 December. Saathiya saw a peak TVR of 6.4 during the week, as per Tam data (C&S – 4+, HSM). A special episode on Sunday, pitted against television premiere of Dabangg on Colors, got it a whopping 5.1 TVR.

Saathiya has not only emerged as the slot leader but also the top show among all the general entertainment channels (GECs).

Says Star India EVP – marketing and communications Anupam Vasudev, "Saathiya is a prime example of how strong content can attract audience even at what others call 'early primetime'. Earlier, this time band was predominantly regional viewership heavy. So we knew viewers are watching television at that time. Why not put great content there?"

Not very long ago, the Hindi GECs were earmarking 8-11 pm as their primetime viewing hours and anything before that was being left by large for regional audiences.

However, as competition in the genre increased manifold with advent of new channels and the fight for the top league became a week-on-week scenario, GECs started experimenting with content scheduling.

Last year the industry saw a show, Chhoti Bahu, waking up the 7.30 pm band with a peak TVR of 5. But that was not the end of the story. It went ahead with the 7 pm slot with Saathiya.

"Not many channels have put original content in the slot. So it has not been exploited," says Vasudev.

As of now, Colors airs Bhagyavidhaata at 7 pm which has managed an average TVR of 1.6 (week ended 4 December) while Zee TV's Dil Se Diya Vachan is hovering with a 1 TVR.

So can a GEC command premium advertising rates at 7 pm which advertisers do not consider as the "purple time band"?

Says Vasudev, "If we sustain the reach and ratings, we can command a premium. Saathiya's current week's reach was above 12 per cent. Though the quality of audience is not as at 9 pm, sustained ratings can help us get good returns."

Star Plus claims that the show is also growing slot leadership margin in Delhi, Mumbai, Maharastra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, PHCHP (Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh) and other Hindi speaking markets (HSM). The show has also enjoyed 18.8 minute time spent during the week.

Thnaks P. Putija for this interesting piece. Now the choice is v. wide. Recently my ma is discussing the sam with my aunty when we wer in delhi.about the choice of shows. Eventhough she started hating Zee eversince they killed CB (tell u she is v huge fan of it), she is considering to give these new slot shows a try (its other thing that i convinced her to not to see them)...during that conversation i got to know colors also luanching some early prime time shows...the enterainment business is grwong like anything but Quality wise its degrading fast..hope something changes in this course. Guess Sab is not following in such games of trps and sticking to some goos comedy shows along with Sony but the results are here to see..these channels are not generating the required numbers
Misti well said about golden goose and killing it. anyways since there are wide range of choice for viewers to slect consider 6 to 11, Channels/PH end up making a good storyline into something like a pot of khichri with every other show c copy of someother..with Zee leading the pack of copycats😉 Interesting article and well said CB proving arounf 5 TVR whereas most of current Zee shows are now 1 or below 1. What lies for CB2 is yet to be seen as i belive most of teh Zee loyal viewers hav left it due to thekind of treatment they met with thr fav. serials..

PP Putija, read this interesting article 2-3 days ago and more than anything found it entertaining and that's all ! Coz there's no telling what novel statement we may hear from yet another source ! 😕😆😃😊
So just trying to be funny and have fun with these pics .. lot of soaps, lot more lather (cute title / topic name !)and nothing else !!😉

Hey Seema Rani, welcome back from cool Delhi ! Dont remember which page on musical but gave some vacation ideas to ya (and others) ... oh well for future !
Yes, do hope that CB2 doesn't fall back in the rut ... but like lotus flower ... keeps its beauty and purity, esp since it seems it's going to be a new storyline, new artists ... still wish and pray that Dadi being a veteran actor, knows how to juggle schedules between the two shows (is the other Bhagowali starting TODAY 9 pm timeslot ?!)
PLEASE COME BACK DADIMA !!
