I see max in this forum are not fans of 13RW. I get it. When I started watching the show I was quite annoyed with the character of Hannah. She seemed very selfish - including some people on the tapes who didn't deserve to be there like Clay (she really messed his head) and even the Zach guy (who stole her "like" messages from that class project - making her think that no one liked her). I also thought the show glamorized suicide (as stated in many criticisms online).
But one thing which really touched me was the Butterfly effect quote - a butterfly flapping it's wings someplace can cause a hurricane in a far off place (paraphrasing). That an action which you might think is harmless can snowball into something really big.
Most of those people had excuses like - I only said this about her, I only told that about her, but those few statements and those seemingly inconsequential mockery and snide attitude can cause a major upheaval in another's life - it's just that we can't see that on the surface. This thing really struck me and made me think.
Another scene which made me bawl my eyes out was Hannah's mother discovering her in the bathtub. I cried so much at that scene. It was horrifying to imagine what the woman must have gone through.
I agree, they should have handled the subject better. These kind of shows are for teenagers/ young adults - many of whom go through the exact problems as Hannah and showing suicide as an escape route is not a good way to go.
They literally showed the way how to suicide. no offense but recording tapes? shitty. dying and then saying that she was there to watch the aftermath of her suicide, making people realize their mistake by dying out on them and having them fall so deep in guilt that they would feel like dying themselves, not cool.
hannah was a character I had no respect and will never have. she made lives of people a joke who actually was really tired after getting up again every day. just because you can't face your life's hardship, is it easy to die on people who really love you? it's like the easy way out. I might respect some people who died due to suicide but I can't even look at people who couldn't handle life and couldn't have had tried harder, she was a teenager, you are supposed to deal with everything. everyone has issues but at the end of the day you want to be lived and loved, you want to be remembered but not the Hannah baker way. :/
it might be offensive to13RW fans but believe me I just came here (like half an hour as of 11:46 - Feb 11'18) talking to a person who literally is facing some real issues but is spreading love, is a part of #projectcureasmile and is not around blaming people for not appreciating what he is doing but he's holding on. so am I, so are you, so is everyone. a friend makes a joke on us, we don't cry and start planning our suicide. there are people who got raped they are here fighting because it wasn't their fault, they never did any wrong that they have to run from life. there are some real issues that those High School ones, you don't have to be famous or be heard ( especially when you didn't even try), you just have to fight for yourself and what you need, you need to tell people you know who actually cares. i know a person whose life is shitty none could imagine, he's fighting for his gender equality rights with his mother okay ?! he legit have become his own villain at times but he's fighting for himself and that's why there are people willing to tell him he's amazing, he's one of the best writers.
