Making sure that the Intellectuals are up to date😉

Dec 10 2014 : The Times of India (Delhi)
Lolcat's in the Oxford Dictionary? Cool beans!
Diksha Kamra
In its largest ever quarterly update, the word-nerds of the Oxford Dictionary have added 1,000 new terms, including slang, business lingo, popular teenspeak as well as surprising acronyms

THE FORMALLY INFORMAL

Not only is the dictionary's 'mahoosive' (or large, for those of us who still use extinct words like 'big') update surprising, some of the terms might confuse a reader initially. For instance, a shabby chic is not an inappropriately dressed girl, but refers to an ancient style of interior design! And the word 'shiny bum' is not inspired by Kim Kardashian.

DUCK FACE: An exaggerated pouting expression where the lips are thrust outwards, typically made by a person posing for a photograph or selfie.

MAN CRUSH : An intense and typically non-sexual liking or admiration felt by one man for an other; a man who is the object of another's intense liking or admiration.

MAHOOSIVE: Exceptionally big; huge.

COOL BEANS: Used to express approval or delight.

ANT'S PANTS: An outstandingly good person or thing.

AL DESKO: Eating your lunch at your desk.

LOLCAT: An internet meme of a cat accompanied by a humorous caption, written typically in a grammatically incorrect version of English as if the cat had written it itself.

SHINY BUM: A bureaucrat or office worker.

STICKER LICKER: An issuer of parking fines.

SHABBY CHIC: A style of interior decoration that uses furniture and soft furnishings that are or appear to be pleasingly old and slightly worn.

CUTTING IT SHORT

We always love abbreviations, don't we? Here are some that were so popular even the Oxford editors couldn't resist giving them a place in their dictionary .

PMSL: Short for 'Pissing Myself Laughing'. A slightly rude version of ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing), used to express great amusement.

MAMIL: Short for 'Middle-aged man in Lycra' or a middle-aged man who is a very keen road cyclist, typically one who rides an expensive bike and wears the type of clothing associated with : professional cyclists.

IDC: Short for 'I don't care'.

TOMOZ: Short for 'Tomorrow'

XLNT: Abbreviation for 'Excellent'.

JEL: Used as a short form for jealous.

FONE: Used as a slang to refer to a cellular phone.

HAWT: Informal respelling of 'hot'.

WTAF: What the actual f*** ISH: A euphemism for 'sh*t'.

THE BIG WORDS

And then, there are those kind of words that one does (sort of) expect to be included in the great glossary.

OBAMACARE: (In the US) An informal term for a federal law intended to improve access to health insurance for US citizens. The official name of the law is the Affordable Care Act or (in full) the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT: The information about a particular person that exists on the Internet as a result of their online activity.

ECONOMIC MAN: A hypothetical person who behaves in exact accordance with their rational self-interest.

FIVE-SECOND RULE: A (humorous) rule stating that food which has been dropped on the ground will be uncontaminated, and therefore safe to eat, if retrieved in five seconds.

FRESH-AIR FIEND: A person who is very keen on outdoor activities and, when indoors, on ventilated rooms. when indoors, on ventilated rooms.

SECRET SANTA: An arrangement by which a group of friends colleagues exchange Christmas presents anonymously with each member of the group being assigned another member, for whom a small gift must be provided, typically costing a fixed amount.

SILVERTAIL: A person who is socially prominent and influential or who displays social aspirations.

RESPAWN: A character in a video game that reappears after having been killed.

PERMADEATH: A situation in which a character in a video game cannot reap pear after having been killed.

SIMPLES: Used to convey that some thing is very straightforward.

We're assuming that the social networking gen as well as the Silvertails will be mahoosively cool beans with these new terms by the Ant's Pants & the Shiny Bums at the Oxford HQ. PS: What about the 'Resting bitch face'?
Maybe, next year?
