Through my book, readers will know what happens behind closed doors in a film family - Gajra Kottary

22 Nov 2014 01:19 PM |

Eminent award-winning television scriptwriter and noted author Gajra Kottary is ready with her new book, Once Upon a Star which she plans to officially launch in early December in the august presence of Pritish Nandy and Anupam Kher. We spoke to Gajra to learn more about her latest literary offering.

What is Once Upon a Star all about?

It's a story that is based in the film industry around the eldest bahu (daughter-in-law) of a film family who is married to a superstar and how her marriage crumbles due to the so-called affairs and dalliances of her husband which masses generally read in film magazines. In my book, I have written about what happens behind the scenes in houses in such scenarios. These things happen in many families but when it's a film family involved, things come under media scanner and it affects and complicates the whole scenario in a manner that is different from an ordinary person's break-up or extra-marital affair. It's the setting that makes all the difference.

Is your book based on any true life story or is it a work of fiction?

It's inspired by everyone in the industry. I have drawn from my own experiences, readings and things that have fascinated me in the industry. But finally it's a piece of fiction. The idea is not to sensationalise or demean anyone. It's for the reader to know what happens behind closed doors in a film family. But having said that I have dealt with different aspects in the book. For instance, the book's also about how in a North Indian film family it is boys who are encouraged to act while girls are quietly married. One of the tracks in the book traces the story of a young girl from a film family who actually goes out and proves to be as good as the males of the family if not better acting wise.

Will the readers be able to draw parallels between your fictitious characters and real ones from the industry?

Yes, readers will be able to do that and I have no problems with it because it's reality that inspires. It's a work of fiction that has been inspired by a whole lot of event about real people. So I have no apologies on that front.

What other aspects of the film world have you spoken about in your book?

We have a lot of gradation in the industry wherein we end up typecasting a film as A-grade, an actor as a B-grade one and so on and so forth. I have also spoken about star mothers and star wives. I have also spoken about casting couch. All this however in the background. My story is universal. Hence people who are not from the film industry will also enjoy reading my book.

Is there any superstar actor whom you see as a true role model?

Aamir Khan is a good role model. He is a fantastic father, good husband and has a great sense of social responsibility.

Hello Tina, based on your recommendation, I did. And i was quite impressed with the star cast, acting, subtlety of drama, no OTT happenings.

Liked the small doses of everyday humour in the serial. Nothing loud. Could totally relate to the normal day to day situations. Seems like a good social drama.

I dont get SonyPal in my Dish package, but will try to catch it online soon. Have been looking for something to watch at 9 pm ever since Masterchef Australia ended. And also something other than Udaan. Udaan is good but these days it is dragging with too much of subjugation going on in the serial...

Responding to a Right to Information query, the police in Uttar Pradesh have listed western culture, mobile phones and lack of entertainment as reasons for rape.

Right to Information activist Lokesh Khurana had in July asked for details on the number of rapes in India's most populous state and the reason behind a spurt in incidents.

The response that he received on Wednesday from the police in 62 districts, ranges from regressive to plain bizarre.

Policemen from Nasirpur in the Firozabad district blamed rapes on the "lack of entertainment options."

The police in the Moradabad district said television and vulgar advertisements cause rapes while the Firozabad police said the way women dress tempts "men with wrong intentions."

In Allahabad, policemen posted at Parvai listed these reasons for rape - "women's clothes, appearance, DD telecast, mobile phones and vulgar songs."

In Meerut, policemen reportedly said the increased use of electronics and the deluge of information through digital media was dangerous and too much to handle.

Police stations in Etawah suggested that too much socializing between boys and girls led to such crimes. Policemen in Hapur mentioned "illegal relationships and vulgar telecasts."

Mobile phones are a common thread; it is the general view that these instruments are a big factor in rising sexual crimes.

"These atrocious thoughts on rape betray a retrograde mindset that blames largely women. How can they stop rapes?" said Lokesh Khurana.

For Mr Khurana's Right to Information query, the Director General of Police, the state's top police officer, had written to chiefs of 75 districts, asking why they thought rapes were increasing on their watch.

The varying theories on rape were submitted, ironically, on a day a minor girl in Amethi was gang-raped in the fields - she had gone there as there are no toilets in her village.

The Uttar Pradesh police have often been criticized as a lawless force that has allowed crime to thrive and that is prone to using a heavy hand while dealing with the public.

A 15-year-old girl who fought back as six men tried to rape her and was then set on fire by them, died of severe burns in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night.

Four of the attackers have been arrested.

The girl was allegedly assaulted on November 17 by the men, all from her village, when she was alone at home in Shahjahanpur.

When she resisted and fought them, the men allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

In her badly burnt state, the girl was reportedly taken from hospital to hospital.

Her family first took her to the Shahjahanpur Medical College and two days later, to the Bareilly Medical College. When her health deteriorated, the hospital asked her parents to take her to Lucknow; they took her to Rohilkhand Medical College, a private hospital in Bareilly, because it was closer. The district administration and local organisations helped them pay the bill as they could not afford it.

The six accused will now face murder charges. The police are still looking for two men who are missing.

The girl was reportedly one of four children and lived with her grandparents for a long time before returning to her parents two years ago.
