During the WW2, when there was not enough food to it due to famine too, America sent a lot of Wheat to India in the form of maida and rawa (semolina the stuff the italians make pasta etc with)

Now South india did not know how to use it as we are basically rice eaters. thso they tried using the wheat as they would use rice . so broken wheat kanji, rawa idli, rawa upma just like brokenrice upma etc was born.

The people who first successfully and tastefully made Idly was MTR. Even today MTR has the best rawa Idli . Their menus are fixed for hte day. No body can order what they want. just eat what they have for hte day that is all. They also have a 100% silver ware service .
Indiragndhi when ever sh visited Bangalore made it a point to eat breakfast in MTR .

More over the ready to eat branch has been sold to a Norwagean company. So the original owners are no longer a part of it.

In the MTR restaurant the exit is from the kitchen. They are so proud of thier kitchen that they invite people to go through it.
