CHANDIGARH: A target of 399 runs was
always going to be tough, especially on a
wearing wicket. But the way Punjab openers
- Jiwanjot Singh and Ravi Inder Singh -
started their second innings raised hopes that
the home team would manage to escape with
a draw against Mumbai, at the Sector 16
cricket stadium.
The duo added just 48 runs for the first
wicket, but most importantly spent more than
an hour at the crease and it seemed that
Punjab would go into the final day without
any casualty.
Mumbai skipper Zaheer Khan, however, had
different plans. A master in the art of reverse
swing, Zaheer brought himself on for a
second spell and nipped out both the
openers.
Coming round the wicket, the left-arm fast
bowler straightened a delivery, which
Jiwanjot (31 off 46b, 4x4) edged to the
keeper. In contrast, from the same round the
wicket line, Zaheer brought one back into
Ravi Inder and shattered the stumps.
Left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar, who had
six victims to his name in Punjab's first
innings, then got into the action and sent
back Taruwar Kohli and Mandeep Singh in
quick succession to reduce Punjab to 101/4.
On the final day of the tie, Punjab's hopes
will rest on the shoulders of Yuvraj Singh
who was unbeaten on 19, when the stumps
were drawn.
Earlier, a stroke-filled knock by middle order
batsman Suryakumar Yadav (62 off 61b, 9x4)
and a late cameo from fast bowler Javed
Khan (44 off 30b, 3x4, 3x6) propelled Mumbai
to 271 in their second innings, giving them
an overall lead of 398 runs.
Test discard Harbhajan Singh picked up four
wickets in Mumbai's second essay, giving
him a match haul of 8/157.
