These days it seems like there is an app for just about everything. Some apps can make our lives easier like ordering dinner with just a few clicks with or getting voice navigation directions. Unfortunately, there are other apps that aren't so helpful and instead can actually be offensive to the lady users they are marketed to.
Take a look at what I mean with the following apps below.
1. Drinking Mirror App
In an effort to encourage women to drink sensibly, the Scottish government has launched the " href="http://www.drinksmarter.org/handy-tools/drinking-mirror-app">Drinking Mirror App. According to the " href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/drinking-mirror/id588297432?mt=8">iTunes store, the app is a "magic mirror" which shows users how "much better they will look if they drink less alcohol." The app takes a picture of the user and increasingly bloats their face as they consume more drinks. The app also deepens wrinkles and reddens cheeks.
A campaign to encourage people to drink sensibly in a country where 38% and 49% of women and men respectively exceed the daily and/or weekly recommended limits of alcohol is a good idea, but shaming women into not drinking because it would detract from their appearance is offensive.
2. Sugar Sugar
While there has been an explosion of dating themed apps over the last few years, " href="http://www.sugarsugar.com/">Sugar Sugar is no ordinary dating service. Sugar Sugar is the app where "romance meets finance" and according to their website it is "the world's most effective and discreet place for finding Sugar Daddy and Sugar Baby relationships."
The app goes on to say, "Men have a natural instinct to surround themselves with beauty, and women have always sought out the security of a mature, financially stable man."
I know a great deal of women who provide for themselves financially and I give men more credit than only seeking partners based on their looks.
3. Girls Around Me
"In the mood for love, or just after a one-night stand?"
A new app similar to " href="https://foursquare.com/">Four-Square, which allows users to "check-in" at different places, now lets you find out where "hot" girls are hanging out. The app, " href="http://girlsaround.me/">Girls Around Me, allows users to see the ratio of girls to guys in different places around them. You can also see what the girls look like and how to get in touch.
Sure apps are meant to be social, but this one seems a bit creepy and stalker-y.
4. I Am A Man
There are lots of apps available to help women track their menstruation, but the " href="http://gizmodo.com/5120556/iamaman-period+tracking-iphone-app-for-sleazy-shameless-players">I AM A Man app is for men. The app helps men track their girlfriend's – or their multiple girlfriend's – menstruation and mood.
That's right. The app allows users to add several ladies so that a man can track each of his girlfriend's periods without confusing them. It even has a password protected feature which ensures that only one woman's name appears on the list to help "avoid misunderstandings and preserve your relationships."
This app very blatantly encourages men to be unfaithful and in a not so smart way. Sure you can password protect your ladies, but who is going to password protect the app store or google (or this post) where you can clearly find a description about the app.
The app is also reminiscent of the age-old stereotype that women turn into monsters when they're menstruating. Lovely.
5. SkinnyCam
Did you know that for just 99 cents you can shed 10 pounds with just a few clicks?
It's true. With the " href="https://itunes.apple.com/app/skinnycam/id322559793?mt=8">SkinnyCam app all you have to do is pinch the area of your body where you want to remove fat on screen and the app takes care of the rest.
I think I'm going to invent an app where a woman uploads a picture of herself and every time she looks at herself a compliment pops up on the screen telling her how beautiful, smart and amazing she is.
