"Young actors have to work on their diction"- Puneet Issar

Veteran actor, Puneet Issar who is presently seen as Jarasandha inImagine's Dhwarkadheesh shares his thoughts and feelings about television today...

When we hear the name Duryodhan we have none other than Puneet Issar's face coming in our mind. It is almost impossible to picture someone else other than him for the role.

Today Puneet Issar is back on television in his new avtar as Raja Jarasandh in Imagine'sDwarkadheesh - Bhagwaan Shree Krishna. Though Puneet has done several roles in the industry his roles in mythos are ever remembered...

In a candid chat with TellyBuzz he speaks about his experiences as an actor and his thoughts on young talents...

You have returned almost after a decade to television. How do you feel?
Actually I am returning to a mytho after almost a decade as I have done Left Right Left in between. I feel really nice to be back.

Were there any expectations while you were returning after a long time?
Not really because I was really engaged in my other work in films. But there were discussions among people that I am returning after a long time. Frankly speaking I was not on a break at all as I was busy with my films.

You have seen Nitish Bharadwaj playing the role of Lord Krishna with you. How would you rate Vishal Karwal in the same role?
Actually one cannot compare Nitish Bharadwaj against any actor; in fact you cannot compare Mahabharata with Dhwarkadheesh. Vishal is a kid now and he is doing pretty well.

How is your association with Imagine TV?
Imagine is a nice channel, they had wanted me to play this role and I gladly agreed.

Now that you have returned with a mythic show, what are the differences that you have felt with respect to techniques and the look etc?
These days television has become like a tissue paper where you use and throw stuffs. The so called creative people have to really work hard on their work and there is a great need of strong scripts.
When we did Mahabharata, we used to take six days to shoot one episode because that was a once a week show. Today since the shows are on daily basis, there is a lot of quality loss. The idea of Mahabharata was generated in 1986 and the show was started in 1988, thus you can imagine the amount of work that has been put for the show.

Since there are a lot of chroma shoots nowadays happening, do you think the show seems unreal when compared to the earlier shows?
Earlier when we had war scenes, we used to shift ourselves to Jaipur so that there is a huge barren land. But here when time is an important factor, the quality suffers.

What made you stay away from television this long?
I was busy with films and direction and writing.

You have been a director and an actor, what do you enjoy more?
Frankly speaking, direction gives you job satisfaction and you feel you are paid for what you like. But acting is also my passion and that's basically what I started with.

Do mythic shows attract you more that the normal fiction in television?
Actually television has become a senseless medium where everything has become temporary. Though there are shows on television now, older shows cannot be recreated like the Mahabharata, Ramayana etc.

Do you watch any shows on television today?
Not really, actually I do not get much time.

You are also doing Chandrakanta at the same time. How do you manage both?
If you like something you do it, and you will automatically get time.

One advice you would like to give to the young talents of today?
I would like to ask them to improve on their diction a lot because sometimes they have the 'chalta hain' attitude which is not really good.

What are your other projects in television and films?
I have a film I Am Singh that is tipped to release in September, it is the story of mistaken identity where Sikhs are killed mistaking them to be Arabs.

Okkk..umm..so if this track end up in a drunk consummation scene or something 'll be royally pissed. I don't want her to be bounded to this relationship by a baby. Ahh...I need to get my head around this track...it sounds veryyy weird to me right now.

And ppl want Kesar and Gulaal to DANCE? And WHICH JA scene do these ppl want on KG. Waise I'd rather they have some unusual, not-seen-before type scenes...because this is not a usual, typical relationship...the main pull of this story for me is that it's DIFFERENT.

Yeah I really don't want to see a drunk consummation scene either...that's a big no no in my books...would be totally retarded to show and just wouldn't fit in with GK yaar...those kind of dumb scenarios are supposed to be there for the usual lame, trite pairs on TV to hook up *rolls eyes*.

Anyways, the more I'm reading about this promo, the more it sounds like it's just a one off thing that the lady said...there is time yet for the GK relationship to grow...I'm waiting to see the video of the promo to get a better idea overall.

And LOL don't ask kaise kaise weird scenarios ppl are coming up with...I don't see how on earth a JA type scenario is every remotely possible on GK cuz like you said, they are different...their relationship is just so unique, unconventional...that is the pull for me as well. Till this point, there has always been something different about their scenes, the treatment of the way those scenes are shown...and I hope that's maintained in the future as well.

@Vas: Thanks for posting that here...I just read it on the main page too...totally agree with him on all his points too...especially the one about diction and the casual attitude of today's newbie "actors" on TV...and ROFL I can't believe they asked him to compare that lame new Krishna with the original...that Splitsvilla loser toh can't even act in a REGULAR role, Krishna kya khaak play karega *rolls eyes*

^ Anu - You've hit the nail on the head! How can they come the current Krishna with Nitish Bharadwaj? I've seen each and every episode of the original Mahabharat and most of the characters are perfectly cast - especially Krishna! I also cannot imagine anyone else playing Duryodhan either - he was so good that he made everyone want to hate him. Puneet Isaar's Duryodhan was EPIC! His comments on the "chalta hai" attitude of the new commers as well as the quality loss is bang on! THAT is what happens with the dailies with endless durations. I am not sure what the solution for that is unless they adopt a YRF season style and end it within specific number of episodes.

On a side note, an article on Navya -

Anant and Navya are enjoying some romantic moments together in Star Plus' Navya. But in the upcoming episodes Navya will enter into some serious confrontation with her sister Renuka and mother Meeta concerning her love life.

Our source informs, "Recently, Navya celebrated the best birthday of her life as her family and Anant showered her with surprises. However, this happiness will be short-lived as Meeta will get suspicious about Navya dating someone. Meeta is extremely worried about her daughter as Navya is very innocent and she does not want her to face any trouble. Meeta believes that Navya might feel awkward and hesitate to share her true feelings with her. So in the upcoming episodes Meeta will take help of her elder daughter Renuka and will request her to ask Navya if she is dating someone. In an effort to seek the truth Renuka will visit Navya's college and speak to her close friends Appy and Ritz. She will also try to gain Navya's faith by telling her that she will keep the secret to herself."

We spoke to Shruti Sharma (Renuka) who said, "I am concerned about my mother and I can't see her worried. I am the connecting factor between my sister and my mother so I will try to find out the truth."

Even Renuka's track is gradually opening. I saw a couple of episodes of Navya last week and it had Gautam trying to act creepily comfortable with poor Ritz ... and THAT too in front of the family 🤢

LOL THIS is how they are opening up Renuka's track?? By having her spy on Navya in the college to figure out who she's dating? LOL...Man, I've lost all patience for this show...

Yeah I read about the creepy jeeju...I'd thought he'd be having an affair elsewhere but now he's leching after Ritz?? Weird :S

I guess they'll still show the affair Anu - by showing him leching after Ritz, they want to show that Gautam is a creepy habitual offender, not a one timer ...

I too don't watch Navya on a regular basis. I just catch up if I find an interesting episode or two.

How are you doing? 😊

Hmm but with Ritz, obviously it's not an AFFAIR...since Ritz isn't reciprocating...then toh it's just one-sided leching only...anywhoo...I watched some epis of CT show last night...saw Khushi jee ka laacture to CT...dude was stone-faced as ever as she ranted and raved and at last handed him her resignation...lol...and then I saw this bit where she's telling her sister, I need to see him again cuz I have to yell at him more😕😆

Day before yesterday, I saw the old movie Angoor with Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in double roles. It is adapted from Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors. I had a great time watching it ... I was literally ROFLing during the comedy scenes. Movies like these are such genuine classics... they don't make like them anymore.

Re: Navya - Yup - I guess they are trying to portray Gautam's character as one who wouldn't leave a chance to flirt with anyone - coz he's apparently been saddled with responsibilities at an early age!

Re: CT show - LOL - the expressionlessness is just too funny to ignore. Wonder how Sanaya can stand up to it. But then, like Vasu said, Mohit wasn't Johnny Depp either 😆 I haven't watched the episode you are mentioning. But might watch today's ... it said it has good brother-sister bonding scenes. *rolls eyes* ... we'll see ...

How is Gulaal coming along?

Oh yeah my parents talk about Angoor too...it's one of their fav. movies...I toh haven't seen it fully...seen some glimpses on TV from time to time.

Re: CT show...yes Mohit was no Johnny Depp either but his character didn't require much histrionics either apart from his lame attempts to be a "cool stud"...this ASR banda is supposedly supposed to be sooo scary and all with his stone-faced stare while I'm just sitting there and laughing at his single expression😆...and this chick is so full of false bravado...itna sunaa ke usko then she herself steps back all scared *rolls eyes*

Oh the brother-sister bonding is good though I have to say...Daljit plays Anjali well...it's a sweet foil to this stony-faced dude...he actually seems to show a tiny bit of improvement in his scenes with her.

Re: Gulaal...do you really want to know, LadyM?😆 Or are you just asking out of politeness?😛😆

You really should see Angoor sometime Anu. It is a clean comedy without any need for laugh tracks. It may be a trifle old world for you, but worth one time watch. And good news - it is free on YT's featured movies - so the quality is also good.

Re: Kushi stepping back - those are preciously the kind of scenes I don't like. It shows that even if you treat me like trash, I will still be like a lost lamb at the slightest display of aggression or retaliation 😆 Even when he rescued her and she lashed at him, the next moment she was gazing at him defeated, with longing when he pinned her against a wall. *yawn*

Yup I like Dalijeet playing Anjali as well. Arnav seems to be act better around her. Should I say, positive influence? 😆

Re: Gulaal - I really want to know. Although I might not know the nuances, I know enough. Talli's engagement with Kunal. Her apparently broken heart syndrome - when she tries to play the jealousy card with Kesar. Gulaal trying to make up for misunderstanding Kesar's intentions ... etc
