The Proposal - A KaHu OS

She squealed in delight as tides washed over her exposed feet. She stood in the middle of the rapid waves in her red oversized t-shirt and her white shorts. Her wavy hair jumped and her colourful, feathery ear ring jingled with her every movement. To others, she was just another over-excited visitor. To Karma, she was the only one on the beach. He stood at a distance, away from the waves with his eyes glued on his girlfriend of three years. Huma.
He hadn't expected in a million years that he'll fall for someone with whom he fought so passionately. But their fights soon gave way to compromised friendship, which blossomed into a love that stood through the hurdles of time and situations. And he wanted to keep it that way, for the rest of his life.
He unconsciously patted the side pocket of his jeans to feel the bump. The bump indicated that the box containing the ring was there.
Yes, he wanted to take it to the next level. She had dropped hints about that every now and then and he had determinedly ignored all of them. But the truth was that he wanted it just as much as she did. He had even bought a ring, a diamond ring. He had to break his saving for it. But she was worth it. Since the day he brought it, he carried it with him, waiting for that special moment. It's been three weeks. He still hadn't found that moment.
But now he couldn't control himself any more. As she twirled in the middle of high tides, and turned to blow him a flying kiss, he lost it. Taking out the small, blue box, he headed towards where she was. He grabbed her hand and turned her to face him. He got down on one knee, not caring about the tides wetting him. Her eyes widened in shock and her jaw dropped.
"Huma, I know this might not be the best moment to say this but I'm tired of waiting. And I'm sure you are too. So I'll cut to the chase. You are sweet, smart, talented, understanding, brilliant and above all, the most beautiful girl I've ever laid eyes on. I thank Lord every time I get to hold you in my arms. You are that special to me. I'm so used to you now I can't even imagine one day without you. And I don't want to either. So I ask you-" He opened the blue box and displayed the diamond ring. She gasped and covered her mouth with her hands.
"Will you marry me, Huma Ali?"
Thick tears trailed down her pink cheeks. She was so overwhelmed, she found it difficult to speak.
He was overwhelmed too. But for different reasons. He was worried that maybe she didn't like the diamond ring or maybe his well-practiced speech wasn't as good as he thought it was. He fretted that maybe her silence meant a less hurtful way of saying 'No'.
After five minutes, she finally spoke.
"Yes. Yes, I will."
She put her hand forward and he had the goofiest smile as placed the ring on her finger. He got up to stand and was immediately engulfed in a hug. He grabbed her by the waist, intending to never let go. But she pulled out, only to cup his face and say, "You made me happy. Now it's my turn to return the favour."
She crashed her lips with his. He was pleasantly surprised since it was their first kiss but he responded quickly. It was a soft kiss filled with love and warmth and a little bit of hunger for all the times they could have kissed but didn't. Her hands weaved around his neck and played with the hair on the back of his head. His hand gripped her tighter by the waist. They pulled out seconds later.
"I love you, Karma Wangchuk." She whispered as she rested her forehead against his.
"I love you too, Huma soon-to-be Wangchuk."
They giggled and dived in for another kiss, as the waves sloshed over them.
It was the beginning of their happily ever after.
