Bollywood box-office report of the week
The coming Friday will see two diverse releases in the form of Ravi Chopra's Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla, Aman Siddiqui and Shah Rukh Khan (special appearance) starrer BHOOTHNATH and Mimoh Chakraborty's debut vehicle JIMMY. Out of the two it is obvious that BHOOTHNATH is the movie that will get a reasonable start, based on interesting promos featuring megastar Amitabh, Juhi, Aman and SRK, and excellent release timing. On the other day, JIMMY has to face the brunt of bad and shoddy 80's and 90's style promos and too many delays.
Last Friday's three releases went the way they were expected to go! While MR. WHITE MR. BLACK had a dull to weak start, ANAMIKA was off to a frighteningly poor to horrible opening. The third release, PRANALI ' THE TRADITION had a disastrous start. One does not have to be a Nostradamus to predict that all the three will fail at the box-office!
Yash Raj Films' Vijay Krishna Acharya directed multi-starrer, TASHAN, featuring Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, paid dearly for non-multiplex release in many parts of the country. In fact, Bombay and Calcutta were the regions that were hit the hardest as the collections dropped badly from mid-week.. Surprisingly, TASHAN faired quite decently in East Punjab, Delhi-U.P. and Hyderabad Nizam. Checking out the numbers, TASHAN collected 2 crores from Bombay, 68 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.30 lakhs from Valsad, 18.80 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.30 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.50 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 3.75 lakhs from Gandhidham, 2 lakhs from Adipur, 4.25 lakhs from Solapur, 1.75 crores from Delhi city, 37.50 lakhs
from Noida, 46.20 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 12.25 lakhs from Kanpur, 7 lakhs from Agra, 1.25 lakhs from Rampur, 12,50 lakhs from Meerut, 6.40 lakhs from Aligarh, 3.35 lakhs from Muzaffarnagar, 2.85 lakhs from Bareilly, 5.70 lakhs from Moradabad, 36.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 20.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 30 lakhs from Calcutta, 12 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.15 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.50 lakhs from Amravati, 3 lakhs from Akola, 4.40 lakhs from Raipur, 2.15 lakhs from Durg, 1.50 lakhs from Wardha, 2.25 lakhs from Chandrapur, 1 lakh from Sagar, 15 lakhs from Indore, 2.40 lakhs from Sehore, 5.35 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.65 lakhs from Ujjain, 24 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.70 lakhs from Bikaner, 4 lakhs from Aurangabad and 76.30 lakhs from Hyderabad. During its opening week, TASHAN has netted a below par 18.50 crores from India and cannot even be called a safe film. TASHAN has also been rejected in the Overseas, grossing a poor $428,923 from the US and a somewhat better $586,608 from the UK.
The Manisha Koirala, Kay Kay Menon, Ranvir Shorey, Sonali Kulkarni, Nauheed Cyrusi and Rituparna Sengupta starrer, SIRF - LIFE LOOKS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE turns out to be a debacle. During the week the film collected 11 lakhs from Bombay, 3.15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Pune, 3.50 lakhs from Delhi city and 1.05 lakhs from Ghaziabad. In all SIRF - LIFE LOOKS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE manages around 65 lakhs in its first week from India and gets to its expected disaster status.
Ajay Devgan's U ME AUR HUM is steady at places. The film gets the benefit of TASHAN's non-multiplex release, by way of good screens for an additional week. The film collected 70 lakhs from Bombay, 17.35 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.65 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.95 lakhs from Pune, 2.15 lakhs from Nasik, 21.40 lakhs from Delhi, 1.75 lakhs from Noida, 3.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 1.35 lakhs from Agra, 4.80 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.55 lakhs from Indore, 2.15 lakhs from Jaipur and 1.05 lakhs from Mangalore. During the week U ME AUR HUM added another 3 crores and has so far netted 22.25 crores in three weeks from India. As we had said last week, the Ajay-Kajol starrer is now a below average to average fare from India. U ME AUR HUM is also a good success in the Overseas, grossing a decent $811,670 from the UK and a good $1,028,191 from US.
KRAZZY 4 too reaped the harvest of the TASHAN-multiplex fallout and the collections look fairly steady. During the week the Jaideep Sen directed film collected 45 lakhs from Bombay, 10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.75 lakhs from Pune, 1.80 lakhs from Nasik, 6.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.30 lakhs from Kanpur, 1.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 4.30 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.40 lakhs from Indore, 4 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.15 lakhs from Aurangabad and 1 lakh from Mangalore. With an additional 2 crores, Jaideep Sen's KRAZZY 4 gets to 22.50 crores and nearer to a semi-hit status from India. In the Overseas, KRAZZY 4 is a reasonable success (due to low procurement prices) with grosses of $268,364 and $487,215 from the UK and US respectively.
Meanwhile SHAURYA and KHUDA KAY LIYE managed another steady week. While SHAURYA added another 20 lakhs to get to 2.90 crores, KHUDA KAY LIYE continues its amazing run adding an additional 45 lakhs to get to 2.30 crores. Both the films remain in the average slot after their four week run in India.
Our last entry of this week is Abbas-Mustan's RACE, which once again has another good week, collecting 7.50 lakhs from Bombay, 5.85 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.35 lakhs each from Rajkot and Pune, 4.30 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.30 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Agra, 1.10 lakhs from Gurgaon and 2 lakhs from Nagpur. With another 65 lakhs, RACE has netted 62.40 crores in six weeks from India. The Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy starrer RACE is a hit plus from India. RACE is also a good hit in the Overseas circuit with impressive grosses of $1,750,917 from UK and $1,367,024 from the US.
