Dev Anand, Bollywood's evergreen actor has an additional reason to be excited these days. His 1960's movie Guide is going to be screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival in its Classics section.
Talking about his film, the senior actor says, "Yes…the film is going to be screened at Cannes. I'm leaving for Cannes on the 17th of this month. It's a good movie. It's the first color movie to be produced in India which makes it a right choice."
The Cannes Classics sidebar was inaugurated in 2004. It is a segment that focuses on screening a selection of new or restored prints of classic films. It is also intended to pay tributes to foreign cinema and documentaries on filmmaking.
Not many know this, but Dev Anand's Guide also exists in English. And it is only Dev saab who owns the one copy of that version. "Ye…I do have the English version of the movie. But that version will not be screened at Cannes because it was the Hindi version that was screened all over the world and which was enjoyed by the people."
In Guide, Dev Anand portrayed the role of Raju, a tourist guide. Waheeda Rahman played Rosie, Raju's love interest. The story basically is about how Raju succeeds in getting Rosie to walk out of her unhappy marriage and helps her make the most of her talent. Raju falls prey to the bad side of success. His bad attitude reaches an all time high when he forges a signature. Raju is caught and sent to prison. When he comes out of prison he is spiritually inclined and becomes a spiritual leader of sorts. Raju even goes to the extent of going on a fast to appease the rain god. Eventually the rains come but its too late for Raju as he dies.
