He is perhaps 2007's most under-rated debutant. Amidst the Kapoors and Padukones, Neil Nitin Mukesh made a low-key, yet impressive start with Johnny Gaddaar. On January 15, Neil turns 26 and it will undoubtedly be a decisive year for his Bollywood innings. We catch him to find out about his plans for the big day
Is this birthday going to be any different?
Definitely it is. My film got released and by the grace of God, I received lot of critical acclaim for my performance. The last few birthdays were more about struggle than celebration. But now, I guess the day is worth celebrating…at least the pressure of making the first impression is off my shoulders.
What are the earliest memories of your birthdays?
As kids, my sister and I used to have these joint celebrations. I was always this big prankster and would always want to go for costume parties. So, each year there would be a theme and all my friends would dress accordingly. Once I dressed up like Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker. On another birthday, I pretended to be my father Nitin Mukesh, complete with the kurta and beard.
Were any of your contemporaries, part of these celebrations?
No, not really. They were all my school friends. We had simple parties but it was always a lot of fun.
And presents? Which is the one gift you cherish the most?
They are all so special. Every present I have got so far, is important to me. I remember once my grandmother gave me grandpa's wallet and watch. A few years back, my father had also gifted me one of his watches. These things will always be close to my heart.
What gifts are you expecting this year?
I have already received an advance birthday present. My father gifted me a Honda Civic a few days back. I told him I really needed a car and couldn't wait till my birthday. I love cars and am always checking out the latest ones. Right now I have settled for an affordable one. But I hope I can upgrade it someday.
How do you plan to celebrate?
I will be taking my parents out for lunch and chill out with them. In the evening, I am going for a wedding. From there, I will take my friends to party. Also don't forget, this year I have to head for work next morning.
You aren't too much of a party animal...
Thankfully, I don't have any wild indulgences. Unless it's a really special occasion, I believe in simple celebrations. I guess it comes from the fact that my parents are very possessive and concerned about me. Even now, they stay awake till I return home. So, I have put self-imposed restrictions and I try not to hurt my parents.
What are your expectations from the coming year?
Extremely positive. I have some great films on hand and am working with fantastic people. I just hope I can deliver the goods.
Finally, any regrets about losing out to Ranbir at the Screen awards?
The year 2007 saw 26 debutants and out of them only two were nominated. I think that's an honour in itself. Also, Chintu uncle's gesture of calling me on the stage to share the glory was sweet. In fact, the award hasn't gone anywhere. It's in my other house with my brother Ranbir. So, why should there be any negativity?
