Abhishek Bachchan's mega-budget superhero thriller has been postponed by a year. While producer says it's because of special effects, trade believes it's got too much competition this year

Better Late Than Never: Abhishek Bachchan
Buzz is that the release of Abhishek Bachchan's mega-budget superhero adventure Drona, being directed by good friend Goldie Behl, has been delayed to next year thanks to his wedding to Aishwarya Rai.

Says a source, "The second schedule of the film was to be shot in April-May, but because of the wedding, all the dates went haywire.

What's more, since the film is relying heavily on special effects, it's going to be a long while before the film is out of post-production now."

'Effect'ive theory

However, Shristi Behl, who is producing the film along with brother Goldie, says, "We never announced a release date so there's no question of us delaying the release.

The dates haven't been pushed back. In fact, the next schedule of Drona is coming up in a couple of months. We know what we are doing and as far as we know we are on schedule."

Shrishti adds that Drona is not just a simple boy-meets-girl love story. "It's very complicated film and requires heavy special effects. In fact, the SFX in Drona will be something you've never seen before.

We've finished shooting about 50 per cent of the film, but in terms of special effects we've only covered about 10 per cent. A lot of work is left to be done on that front.

By August, we will have a clear idea of how much more time we will need to complete the film," adds Shristi.

Heavy competition

Meanwhile, trade analyst Amod Mehra says that Drona was being touted as an end-of-the-year biggie release in trade circles, so he's a bit surprised about the delay.

"We heard Drona was being released in November, but now there's talk of it being pushed to next year.

The heavy special effects apart, it's also possible that Drona is being delayed because there are so many biggies coming up at the end of this year.

There's Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha Akbar, Pradeep Sarkar's Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariyan. Chances are even Shah Rukh Khan might release Om Shanti Om around Diwali.

Nobody wants to bring Drona aur phir rona with the likes of SRK, Yash Raj Films and Hrithik Roshan competing for eyeballs!"

Drona Dar Gaya??
[25 May 2007]

Abhishek Bachchan's ambitious project ' Drona', which was touted as a fitting answer to Hrithik's super hero image and expected to be released in November this year, has been postponed to next year due to its shooting spells getting delayed after AbhiAsh marriage in April. As the film is a super hero thriller with heavy special effects, it's taking extra time in that department. But trade pundits view the postponement differently and say that it was due to the release of Hrithik Roshan's Jodha- Akbar and other biggies at the end of this year which forced the postponement.

As a well-known trade analyst reveals, ' We heard Drona was being released in November, but now there is talk of it being pushed to next year. The heavy special effects apart, it's also possible that Drona is being delayed because there are so many biggies coming up at the end of this year. There is Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodha Akbar, Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunri Mein Daag and Sanjay Bhansali's Saawariyaan. Chances are that even Shah Rukh Khan might release Om Shanti Om around Diwali. Nobody wants to bring Drona aur phir rona with the likes of SRK, Yashraj Films and Hrithik Roshan competing for eyeballs!'

However, Srishti Behl, who is producing the mega budget film, defends the delay on account of a very complicated superhero flick being a different film altogether from a simple boy meets girl love story. The film has a very heavy dose of special effects which has not been shown yet in an Indian movie and of that only ten percent has been completed till now. Though the shooing of the film has been completed by fifty percent, the clear picture will emerge only after the month of August.

Goldie Behl, who is directing the film and also a close friend of Bachchans, denies having fixed any date for the completion and release of the film. He is expecting the next spell to take place in a couple of months after Abhishek Bachchan returns from his honeymoon in Europe.

It may be recalled that though the movie is being produced by Srishti and her brother Goldie Behl, Big B has been taking personal interest in the film from the very beginning. The buzz was that Bachchans were even arranging for the finances and leaving no stone unturned in making the ' Drona' a super duper hit at the box office. Perhaps due to this concern for Abhishek they do not want the film to have any competition from Hrithik's Jodha- Akbar, in which Ash is playing the character of Jodha.
