No, I really think that it had been physical attraction, too...and why not???

Btw, I don't like the term of "dating" in this case as they had a serious relationship... to me, "dating" implies meeting first (restaurant, e.g.) and then - maybe - a one night stand...and then - maybe - a string of many encounters (intimate or not) without a commitment.

So, e.g., what Deepika talked about in the (un-)famous KWK-episode, could have been meetings without any sexual involvement (just as an example).
