Do you feel your MIL should have an opinion on what kind of dress you should wear? Should you do what she says? Or wear whatever you want ? Is it disrespectful to not obey what she asks you to wear?

How to respectfully tell her that I want to wear what I like?

Clothes is a tension or stress for me... If you can volunteer to buy, sew and prepare it for me... I don't mind.. you can even iron or wash it for me.. I will be happy and not complain...

Does your husband like what you wear?

I think as long as the clothes are decent and compliment you well - be it western or ethnic, nobody should have a say in what you wear after a certain age and that includes your parents, partner or others. Most Indian MILs are anyway very controlling and treat DILs like their mouth piece who's there to oblige them. Saw this happen in my cousins' case. Communicate to your MIL respectfully how you want to feel comfortable in your clothes and like dressing up as per your liking. If she persists, ask her to take a hike.

Gift her something which you know she won't wear. When she points it out.. gently tell her that like how she likes to have the right to choose what to wear you do too and as long as you like them and are comfortable in those clothes it's nobody's business.

"Hey, MIL! Just like a unicorn's mane, my style is uniquely me. I want to sparkle in what makes me feel fabulous. Your input is like sprinkles on the cake, but I'm the baker here. Let's mix and match our opinions, shall we? 🦄👗"

You should wear whatever you feel like, clothes are a personal choice and as long as it’s not too indecent that your MIL is feeling uncomfortable then it’s all good. Talk to your husband if she is not understanding and respecting your choice.
