Newbird, I think that "Maryada Ramanna" is a good example how one can be inspired by a story already told and change it into a story with a regional identity. I also liked the way Rajamouli did not highten the expectations of people during promotion but somehow kept honest to the kind of story he told.
HMR, I would say that all the points you name are valuable...still I would stress the fact that in arts and storytelling the audience will always be the most instable factor.
Before social media and YouTube, it were "only" the critics and the word-of-mouth that influenced people to go to watch a movie. Now, there are tremendously growing attempts to influence people's interest for a movie/involved persons regardless if the attempt is based on a genuine opinion after having watched the movie or if it comes with an agenda.
People in media/social media strive on campaigns (for-against) long, long before the respective movie is released creating a certain climate (we experience it here, too).
Actually, I'm sure that most of the audience rely on trusted critics and the w-o-m of people they know, on things they may like in the movie and on the money they can spend.
The decision to go to the movies is - with the steep prices - not so easy anymore then many years ago. Already years before the pandemic watching movies in a theatre wasn't anymore a well used distraction for poor people.
