There is one saying that people will opt for anything which gives them the value for time and money. Any product in market which fulfills any or both will get hit. Same applies for entertainment. An entertaining movie will work even with bad script. Songs also help.

Newbird, I think that "Maryada Ramanna" is a good example how one can be inspired by a story already told and change it into a story with a regional identity. I also liked the way Rajamouli did not highten the expectations of people during promotion but somehow kept honest to the kind of story he told.

HMR, I would say that all the points you name are valuable...still I would stress the fact that in arts and storytelling the audience will always be the most instable factor.

Before social media and YouTube, it were "only" the critics and the word-of-mouth that influenced people to go to watch a movie. Now, there are tremendously growing attempts to influence people's interest for a movie/involved persons regardless if the attempt is based on a genuine opinion after having watched the movie or if it comes with an agenda.

People in media/social media strive on campaigns (for-against) long, long before the respective movie is released creating a certain climate (we experience it here, too).

Actually, I'm sure that most of the audience rely on trusted critics and the w-o-m of people they know, on things they may like in the movie and on the money they can spend.

The decision to go to the movies is - with the steep prices - not so easy anymore then many years ago. Already years before the pandemic watching movies in a theatre wasn't anymore a well used distraction for poor people.

Platforms to ENTERTAIN are making more choices available to the consumers.

Therefore a Movie's appeal has to greatly entice 'A MOVIE GOER' to spend money on a ticket.

OTT platforms are value for money. The advertisement rates are premium for these.

A movie can be appealing to any section of people to watch. It's depends on their life.

Point is with OTT, you have option of watching many entertaining movies, many of them with good scripts.

For people to spend money on a theatrical, it has to stand out. Good script takes care of half that job. Or something else has to compensate. Could be star power, VFX, action, anything else.

Bottomline is people want entertainment for the money they fork out.

Songs don't help any longer. No one will go to the theaters to watch only the songs what with YT available for free.

If we're looking into psychoanalysis Maslow's hierarchy of needs should be used to assess why the audience changed.

When society is thriving aka their basic and emotional needs are fulfilled, they seek actualization. Pre-pandemic society was thriving more or less. People were craving media that was more meaningful and insightful. Story-driven and social message narratives thrived.

During the pandemic, thousands of people lost their basic livelihood and dropped a few income brackets. People got isolated from friends and family. They couldn't do things they loved. The post-pandemic society is looking to fulfill their basic needs. They don't want realism. They want escapism. They want larger-than-life cinema that delivers mindless entertainment. They get turned off when too much social messaging. The movies that are becoming hits are akin to masala entertainers that thrived in the 70s and 80s and then started falling out of favor.

As society rebuilds post-pandemic and people fulfill their basic and emotional needs more - this basic entertainment formula will fall out of favor and people will crave more meaning.

But of course, there are always many exceptions. This is a mass generalization.

Infact, movies that have worked post pandemic - KGF and Pushpa are literal craps .

Agree with this point… I watched pushpa and enjoyed it but I don’t see how it was much different from Salman khan movies… infact the sexism and misogyny was worse than BW movies…

Pushpa in collections didn’t even break even in its regional Telugu states.. it actually did better in hindi… so please don’t tell us how BW audience has now better taste 😂

Bollywood needs to go back to the basics while maintaining innovation. They also need to cut down on nepotism and take Karan Johar out of power. The fact that people got excited over Brahmastra which was a terrible movie, at be at. Is both sad and reflective of how low the bar is
