I think this is my favorite movie of 2012. I was literally crying bucketful of tears whilst watching the movie.

Such an emotional, heart-touching movie. I loved the speech at the end that is probably my favorite scene.

But the best part about is the concept of self-love which it propagates. Learning a new language becomes a metaphor for shedding excess baggage and acquiring a new perspective. I love how she transitions into a woman who earns respect from the very family who took her for granted. The best part -- it's not because she learns English that they start respecting her, it's because she showed them that she is capable of surmounting the odds stacked against her.

Sridevi's performance was magical. It leaves a lump in my throat whenever I watch her in this movie. Probably one of her career-best performances.

Do you share a love for the movie as well?

I found the film to be a little too simple and cliche at times but Sridevi's performance is definitely one of my favorite ever in bollywood. The fact that she was able to act that way even after a 15 years hiatus is insane, just tells you how great an actress she was.

Loved it! One of my favorite films. All the characters were very well written and the story was presented with a really nuanced approach. What’s not to like

Not a fan of the movie largely because not a fan of Sri Devi. She always been mechanical in acting for me.

Even then I would have appreciated a good story or screenplay which this movie isn't according to me. I cannot connect with the story, characters and their decisions.

I love this movie! It kept me interested from beginning to end. It was very real in the sense that your family members can indeed just walk all over you to the extent they can if you don't upskill and level up with them over time. That can be anything where you're lagging and not just speaking/knowing English since a lot of people get hung up on colonialism, etc. when they criticize this movie.

Only I found way too many things wrong with her husband in the movie than just disrespecting her for not knowing English and wish he was raked over the coals for it. 😆

This movie was the reason I enjoyed this forum! I literally came here to vent about why Sridevi lost the awards to Vidya

And why did she lose the awards to Vidya?😆 I always thought English Vinglish was unanimously loved.

It amuses me when foreign reviewers review the film and unanimously vote for Sridevi to leave her husband and kids and run away with the French guy. It's an excellent example of cultural differences and what exactly we perceive as lack of love and irrevocable differences in a marriage. As Sridevi herself says in the film, love isn't the problem. Respect is. And she stands up for it and demands it for herself in a way that's true to the character. Dignified and courteous but assertive all the same. At the end her family learned that they can't walk over her anymore and that they've treated her shamefully. And she learned the lesson that love isn't enough, she's got to be assertive and demand her share of the respect.
