It's very entertaining and rewatchable movie. Definitely one of the best commercial movie in last few decades but the book Five point someone was much better.Probably the best book of Chetan. That book deserved an honest and better adaptation .

I feel the movie was the better adaptation. 2 states was the only good book he wrote.

My dislike for Hirani started from this movie...then i realized that Hirani makes a joke of everything...Doctors/Medicine/medical practices , Education , people's faith(well i would this this is okay , if he was not selective about only one religion).

He made SANJU movie also in the same movie...another joke...it hardly shows how Dark the whole thing played out of Sanjay dutt in real life.

Rape jokes on many occasions , in movies, in public etc...Strangely Anupama Chopa never felt uncomfortable with any of these ... which she readily agrees about other's movies.

Anyways , I hated the movie from get go...its very very preachy while being so wrong about education in general.

The movie was and is utter BS.

Hirani will... if ever only be rememberd for his success. As a filmmaker he wont stand the test of time.

But considering the kind of craze around it and the fact that it is extremely popular around the world seems to make the movie overrated in my eyes. Is it really THAT GOOD?

What with running away with the bride from a wedding, swapping places in college and the whole "chamatkar" speech are some of the most overrated aspects about the movie.

Also, another fact that makes it overrated in my eyes is that unlike Dangal and Dil Chahta Hai, I don't go back to the movie and revisit it often. Isn't that the trademark of nay great movie -- that you watch it again and again? I don't feel that way about 3 Idiots.

How I would describe the movie -- escapist entertaining fare with a good message. But not outstanding.

what good message did the movie have ? If anyone actually takes that message...is bound to be screwed in life.

and hence , i find this movie more problematic...because it does not appear to be problematic. But it actually is ... the fan base for these movies are early to late teens and undergrad students.

Well I guess that might be subjective but Five point someone is loved by majority of Chetan's readers. The character of Ryan is far more realistic and nuanced than Rancho. The story is simple yet it has some underlying message without making it preachy and cheesy like 3 idiots. Even the whole build up to Alok jumping from terrace makes more sense than whatever was shown in movie.

3 idiots and Chetan Bhagat are both overrated. I couldn't stand any of the characters. Aamir's character is the worst as the smug know-it-all. Hirani is that painter who chooses to paint only with pastels when he hasa whole palette of colors available. And that balatkaar speech would have been condemned if the movie had been released these days.

Yes overrated to a high degree. The jokes were insensitive and crude esp the " balatkar" one.

The achievement of Rancho was shown as a cake walk, somewhat entitled. Aamir plays these highly privileged characters or roles. Boring.

The delivery scene was a mockery. Why didn't people protest?

Only Madhavan's character was okay.

I agree. 3 Idiots is supremely entertaining with a lot of repeat value. But over time I feel that it really loses its sheen. There is nothing outstanding about it. It's just mediocre. On a technical basis, movies can be good or bad.

But there is an emotional lens to evaluate movies. If it makes people happy and people turn to it over and over again to find some relief and humor - that's quite an accomplishment. Its quite difficult to create something with that kind of repeat value. On that basis - I don't think its overrated - but just rated.

Everyone has to pay bills. Even people who take risks in life. But most don't even try and then say it can't happen. Of course it won't happen if you don't try.
