Mood of the Nation poll: Deepika Padukone keeps her crown as India's Heroine No. 1

The glamour is missing and the big screen is empty. The popcorn has moved to our couches and the multiplex has come home. In this year of weird and extraordinary things, how have our Bollywood actresses fared? The India Today-Karvy Insights Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey reveals Deepika Padukone has kept her crown.

Deepika Padukone was chosen as India's Heroine No. 1 by 16 per cent those polled in the recent MOTN. Priyanka Chopra is close at second spot with 14 per cent votes, while Katrina Kaif takes the third rank with 13 per cent votes. Aishwarya Bachchan ranks fourth in the list with 10 per cent votes.
Anushka Sharma, who had secured the second rank in the last edition of the MOTN survey (January 2020) came fifth this time with 9 per cent votes, while Alia Bhatt and Kangna Ranaut tied for the sixth position.
In January 2020 MOTN poll, Deepika Padukone had been on top as well, while Anushka Sharma came in second.
An analysis of the past three surveys shows that there has been a drop in Sharma's popularity this year. She had gained the No.1 spot in January 2019 survey, slipped to No. 2 spot in the next edition (August 2019) and maintained the position in the next poll (January 2020).
The year 2020 did not see any big films from any actresses, though they have made much noise on social media. From quarantine routine on Instagram videos to ask-me-anything sessions, Bollywood actresses have made the most of the pandemic year so far. Some, like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, have also signed some big films and deals this year.

THE METHODOLOGY
The MOTN poll was conducted by a Delhi-based market research agency between July 15, 2020, and July 27, 2020.
This poll has traditionally been conducted using face-to-face interviewing method. However, in this edition of the survey, due to the unprecedented situation arising out of Covid-19 pandemic, all interviews were conducted telephonically using a standard structured questionnaire, which was translated into regional languages.
A total of 12,021 interviews were conducted -- 67 per cent in rural and 33 per cent in urban areas -- spread across 97 parliamentary constituencies and 194 assembly constituencies in 19 states -- Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In each of the assembly constituencies, a fixed number of interviews were done.
