she alone is not to be blamed for Chhapak's failure, that I agree. But then is the biggest reason for movies failure...
No doubt the movie premised on a grim subject. Acting is subjective. Some say she was fantastic in the movie. However, for me she did act well too -- but nothing gut-wrenching (except for that one scene where she looks into the mirror and lets out a scream).
Secondly she made the promotion all about herself. Massey got little to no space in promotion. Her shenanigans like "wanting to burn prosthetic" was not in a good taste. The political cause she chose to side with took away the remnants of respect from DP.
Also, as a co-producer, she must have not made it about herself. The subject matter required someone who could actually act. She is a good actress, but for the subject matter to connect with audience, one needed extra-ordinary acting and equally brilliant actor. Parvathy in Uyare, for example. A lesser-known but a brilliant actor would have at east kept the spotlight on the subject matter irrespective of the movie's box office status. Sadly DP's shenanigans even took away the focus from the subject the movie premised on as well as the implications it meant for society at large.
I think Deepika’s performance was bad. Particularly in the pre incident scenes where she’s sposed to be young and innocent and full of spark. It clearly looked like a 30 year old trying to act like an 18 year old.
The film itself was badly done aswell IMO. The screenplay was all over the place and leaving the backstory till the end screwed up the whole emotional connect we are meant to have in the story.
Most of all, the film and its performances felt very insincere. It seemed like they were trying to incite applause which never works. I felt panga had a lot more sincierity and genuine emotion in it. This felt “staged”
I am Deepika fan. Chapaak was a horrible movie with terrible direction. Deepika knew that the movie will fail after release. This is the reason she went to anti India coven to create drama. Her planned miserably and the horribly made film got boycotted by masses.
Didn't watch chapaak . I mean something is so off about this movie. Since cocktail I haven't missed any movie of DP ,I watched even finding fanny in theatre but this movie failed to create an impact. Felt like a documentary. Uyire was a movie with similar subject but there was story in it and it wasn't predictable from trailer, one song was the biggest hit of last year ,along with parvathy's acting, the antihero's performance was appreciated.
Chapaak in one word was bland the storyline was predictable , the acting and characters was unimpressive.
Ranbir's ex thought Chapaak would be a home run in terms of box office and among critics. But this is one of the instances her calculation totally missed the mark.
I guess all this dial down to the sincerity she put in the project. I didn't know with what intention she started this project but the way she behaved throughout the promotions and her other antics didn't reflect any sincerity towards the actual victims.
I disagree with you on this because u posted so many topics when chhapak wasn't released that Deepika gonna be the queen of BW but after its failure you can't run away from it. I am a DP fan too but you have to admit that her eyes are expressive, she can emote but her dialogue delivery is mediocre.
More than DP’s, it was more of Meghna’s failure. She got carried away with DP’s similarities to Laxmi.
Watch Uyare and you will understand. Though Uyare has some fairy tale aspects in the second half, the makeup, emotions and practicality were done so well. Like someone said, I felt the emotions Pallavi (player brilliantly by Parvathi T) was feeling...helplessness, bleakness, anger, everything. I wanted slap Asif Ali so badly. None of that was felt for chapaak. It was bland. Story has such potential, but makeup was distracting and DP’s dialogue delivery was so flat.
I think DP is one actress In the current lot who can communicate with eyes, but from SLB to pretty much everyone she works with do not utilize that. Instead they give her dialogues to butcher.
Asks Zarina Wahab...
