'Jo lakhon ke dil mein dhadhak raha tha, woh kuch ke aankhon mein khatak rakh tha' - That's how we are given the introduction of Narendra Damodardas Modi in Omung Kumar's biopic.

Well, Bollywood is minting cash on the popular trend of biopics, and the latest one to join the bandwagon is Vivek Oberoi's 'PM Narendra Modi'.

From the very beginning, the movie sets the tone that India's most powerful leader, Modi is honest and has no flaws. From 1950 to the day he took the oath as India's Prime Minister, the movie has captured all the events wherein you see the heroic side of the man who started his journey from being a 'chaiwala' to India's biggest 'chowkidar'.

For Modi followers, the movie is a celebration of the man who rose to become one of the most powerful politicians in the world, from humble beginnings.

From his personal to professional life, Modi has been glorified to the fullest in this biopic. There will be moments in the movie where your heart will burst with immense pride, but this saintly tale comes off somewhat as an account told by a fanboy or in colloquial yet controversial terms, a 'Modi Bhakt'.

Narendra Modi is shown as a prophet of humanity and now, we totally get why the Election Commission banned the film before the polls, as it would have garnered the PM nothing but more fan following before the results. But, we must say that the timing of the movie is still apt, as the NDA government is set to come to power again, along with Modi retaining his chair as Prime Minister.

However, the movie has whitewashed all the controversies associated with Modi, particularly the Gujarat riots. But, I am not saying the movie won't evoke a sliver of patriotism in you. Although, as a movie buff or critic, you might find it as a manipulative attempt to make Modi look like a Messiah of sorts.

PM Narendra Modi movie review: Vivek Oberoi's film is high on patriotism but is still a disappointing watch

Vivek Oberoi starrer PM Narendra Modi, directed by Omung Kumar, has the actor playing the role of the Indian Prime Minister. Check out the full review of the movie here.

Here's our review of Vivek Oberoi's PM Narendra Modi biopic!

The problem with biopics in our country is that the protagonist is always shown as this perfect, larger than life person who is just a victim of circumstances and a phoenix who has risen from the ashes. Even if it’s true that the person has risen from the ashes, it would make such a world of a difference if you also highlight the flaws just a little bit. PM Narendra Modi has had quite an eventful life and while most people criticise his ways, a lot find his journey quite inspiring. Vivek Oberoi had shocked fans and audiences when he released the first look of PM Narendra Modi because no one even knew that he had been working on this film.

This is not the first biopic that Omung Kumar B has directed, if you remember Sarbjit, which is why you feel disappointed at how PM Narendra Modi has been directed. For someone who has managed to be in the ugly side of controversies and still develop an entire state, eventually a country, the script fails to maintain that balance in the movie. Vivek Oberoi delivers a decent performance, not an impressive one though, throughout the film. The second half of the film focuses on PM Modi’s rallies right and his journey before he was elected Prime Minister for the first time and the actor’s dialect has uncanny resemblance to the Prime Minister’s speeches. That’s where you can’t help but give Vivek the brownie points he deserves as an actor. Not to mention, the artists who got the prosthetics done also deserve an applause here.

While the actors have done complete justice to the roles they played in the film, it’s the weak writing and bad script that does complete injustice to them. There is also a lack in continuity. At one point, the narration said ‘Thus began a strong partnership between PM Modi and Amit Shah’ but their camaraderie is not even given the attention it deserves. The cameras refuse to give any other supporting characters enough screen time. There are scenes that are OTT and absolutely unnecessary. As an ardent follower of the leader, you might even enjoy this movie but as someone who goes to watch movies in search of good content, you’ll end up leaving the theatres disappointed.

‘PM Narendra Modi’ review: Vivek Oberoi falters in a soulless biopic

The film works as an unapologetic fanboy tribute to the Indian Prime Minister

What we feared just happened.

The Bollywood biopic, a tainted genre dismissed for glorifying subjects, will continue with its dubious legacy.

can't post the review because i-f is not allowing some slangs in the article

NOTE: Any of my below comments is on the movie and not the person. So, before bashing, please know I’ve always been a fan of Narendra Modi (and also I’ve never had suicidal thoughts).

What’s Good: A rough idea of what all Narendra Modi has been through – though I can’t vouch for how much shown in the film is a complete truth

What’s Bad: It crosses every limit of calling itself a biopic – it just goes into a different zone from which it never comes back

Loo Break: Two conditions – If you’re some other party’s fan or you’re a die-hard movie buff

Watch or Not?: Rewatch the election results’ coverage that happened today, you’ll be more satisfied

The story is set throughout the country, but it starts of course with Gujarat. We see Naru aka Narendra Damodardas Modi selling tea for his living. He stays with his parents and siblings with a vision of doing something for the country. Saluting wherever he sees Indian flag and he sees it very frequently, Narendra is confused in choosing his career from – an army-man, a monk or something in politics. He decides to become a monk and goes to hills, to spend the rest of his life.

He meets a senior monk there who teaches him a few important life-lessons over the course of two years. Now, Narendra Modi wants to do something for the country, and hence he joins Gujarat politics. He levels up to the political scenario over there, and free the public from the tyrannical rule over there. He becomes everyone’s favourite but unfortunately is pushed from his own party. He returns back stronger and be the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The rest of the story sums up his race towards the top tier of political hierarchy – Prime Minister.

PM Narendra Modi Movie Review: Script Analysis

Being a biopic, Sandip Ssingh’s story is inspired by our Prime Minister’s life, but it takes way too many liberties to prove a point. I’m not at all denying the greatness of Mr Modi, but the film emotionally manipulates you to believe things. The whole flashback sequences of PM’s childhood, he going to the hills are stretched more than required. Poorly written lines, melodramatic angles, characters overacting just add to the dragging narrative of the film.

It has certain good moments but the majority of the film is filled with many cringe-worthy ones. The last thing it required was pop-patriotism, and it has a lot of it. The screenplay is as flawed as the story; it just doesn’t give you a chance to connect with it. A very good point mentioned by someone at the screening: “I could’ve tried to like the film if it wasn’t based on someone’s real life.” There are many incidents swept under the rug, very conveniently and we know it because we’ve seen it happen.

PM Narendra Modi Movie Review: Star Performance

Vivek Oberoi proves to be miscast. Neither he gets the tone right, nor he gets the look right. He looked similar in the later portions of Mr Modi’s life, but that’s mainly because of the make -up. He goes over-the-top in many scenes with his handwork and the way of delivering dialogues.

Manoj Joshi has done a decent job as Amit Shah. As described in the film he was Sehwag & Veeru to Modi’s Tendulkar & Jai. The chemistry between both the leads could’ve been better, but everything crawls because of a lazy screenplay. Prashant Narayanan proved to be the best of the lot. His portrayal of a corrupt business is filled with sass, and he carries it very stylishly.

PM Narendra Modi Movie Review: Direction, Music

It’s been a streak of very average films like Bhumi & Sarbjit for Omung Kumar. This being a little better attempt than Bhumi, stays one of his weakest works. Everything is abrupt & direction just lowers your interest in the film. Though comparatively, the second half is better than the first, the film lost the viewer in me in the first 10 minutes.

Going by the subject of the film, it never demanded a song. But we’ve so many, without remembering the name of any single one (let me Google). Saugandh Mujhe Iss Mitti Ki – the name is enough. We also have a rap song with a silent ‘C’ in the start; it’s named Namo Namo. No other songs are worth mentioning.

PM Narendra Modi Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, the movie lacks entertainment value as it has nothing to offer. Even the greatest of the stories require good narrators, and that’s what this biopic is missing.

Two Stars!

Trade Speak: Narendra Modi a winner, but no takers for Vivek Oberoi starrer PM Narendra ModiBySubhash K. Jha

Created: May 24, 2019 - 11:11 am IST

The Vivek Oberoi – enacted Narendra Modi bio-pic which opens on Friday holds little interest for the public. Held back by the Election Commission during the Lok Sabha polls, the film, according to trade experts is in a no-win situation. Trade expert Amod Mehra feels there is no interest in the bio-pic in spite of PM Modi’s return to power. “The response to the advance booking clearly indicates that people are not interested in the biopic as all are aware of Narendra Modi’s life which is barely interesting. These kind of docu-dramas are ideal for free viewership on TV.”

Says Kishan Damani a leading film distributor of Bihar, “People have seen more than enough of the Prime Minister during the elections on every medium possible. Plus, Vivek Oberoi is a big minus. There is absolutely no interest among exhibitors in this film.”

Apparently the leading multiplex chains are putting up a few token shows of the Modi bio-pic as a “show of respect to Modiji”. Says an unnamed personnel from a multiplex chain, “We have Aladdin and we have India’s Most Wanted. PM Narendra Modi is not on anyone’s must-see list this weekend.”

Trade analyst Girish Johar is more optimistic. “There is a decent buzz for this Vivek Oberoi starrer. Omung Kumar is a good director and he seems to be pretty much in a comfort zone with this one too. Purely seeing the film from an entertainment perspective is important for the audiences. The awareness is quite high, for obvious reasons, but actual movie-ticket buying audience will be waiting for the feedback of the content and its word of mouth. Yes, the political situation in the country presently, will definitely add some % bonus factor and with Modiji’s victory the BJP party workers may actually celebrate by thronging the theatres to watch the film.”
