BJP MLA Raj Purohit seeks ban on "Padmavati"

November 9, 2017 | UPDATED 22:10 IST

Mumbai, Nov 9 (PTI) BJP MLA Raj Purohit today said he has written letters to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani seeking a ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansalis upcoming film "Padmavati".

The legislator from Mumbadevi assembly constituency here, today held a press conference in the presence of the members of the Maharashtra unit of Karni Sena, which has already opposed the film.

"Bhansali has twisted the historical facts about the braveheart royal women of our country. It is nothing but an insult to our rich and glorified history. It has hurt the sentiments of the people of Rajasthan and the country," Purohit said.

"The legendary queen (Padmavati) has been reportedly portrayed in a bad light (in the film). Rani Padmavati never danced, rather all women from royal families lived a very dignified life and whenever they felt that their chastity is in danger, they would jump into fire, so that nobody can touch them. Rani Padmavati was one of them," he said.

A Rajput queen being shown as dancing in front of everyone is completely against the Rajput culture and pride. No community will be able to tolerate it and this is why distributors across the country have started giving the cold shoulder to this film, the BJP leader added.

Purohit, who is BJP chief whip in the Maharashtra Assembly, however, clarified that his support to Karni Sena was "personal" and it has nothing to do with his party.

Members of the Karni Sena, who were present alongside Purohit, raised slogans against Bhansali and demanded that the Censor Board should not clear the film.

Umed Singh Shekhawat, the convener of Maharashtra unit of Karni Sena, said, "We are going to oppose it tooth and nail. The Karni Sena and 36 other communities will hold a march on November 20 against the film. Nonetheless, if the film is released, then we will hold demonstrations outside the cinema halls."

"Bhansali should be booked on the charge of sedition as he has played with the dignity of the country. We tried our best to meet him, but he did not even bother to meet us and to listen our voice," Shekhawat added.

The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, is set to release on December 1. PTI APM NP

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati' has been facing many issues since it started rolling. Many controversies came up one after another surrounding the film. Fringe political outfits like the Rajput Karni Sena has continued with its tirade against the film and has declared that they will boycott the release of the film. However, recently, Information and Broadcasting minister, Smriti Irani said that the film will face no trouble during its release. While replying to Karan Johar's comment about 'political pressure' on the film, at an event, she assured that the state government will ensure the law and order and will not allow any miscreants to disrupt any kind of interaction or display. She said, "I am sure law and order will be under control. The State government will ensure no miscreants disrupt any kind of interaction or display. I don't envisage any problem. If there is any challenge, the State government will meet it." She added that miscreants without cover create such controversies and if the filmmaker communicates it properly then it is taken care of. She also said that to say something will happen is kind of "localised fear" these days. Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, 'Padmavati' is all set to hit the theatres on December 1, 2017.

And Padmavati is a gift that never fails to deliver on drama...😲

I can guarantee that the off-screen screenplay will be more exciting than the one we see on screen Dec 1 onwards. 😆

Copy+pasting my reply on another thread-

Distorting history to serve your own purpose is certainly not on but if SLB hasn't done that, why should this hooliganism be given a free pass? Even if he has, instigating violence and saying stuff like 'women in filmmakers families change husbands everyday so wouldn't know anything about the sacrifice of Jauhar' is just hitting an all time low.

How are you respecting Padmavati's struggle by insulting other women? This is typical of our society- apni bahu, beti aur maa devi aur doosron ki fair game.

If he has distorted history, file a lawsuit against him. Vandalising property is what hooligans do- that too over a film. These kind of acts just prove how freedom of speech is under serious threat in our country. Filmmakers and cartoonists being attacked and pressurised like this is horrible.

That BJP MP should apologise for his highly sexist comments.

Also, instead of being proud over the fact that Padmavati had to commit jauhar, please deal with the root of the issue- men whose tribal mindsets make them think women of rival groups are playthings and slaves. It is deplorable that every time there is a war, those who can't defend themselves are targeted. There should never be a situation where a woman would rather immolate herself than live. Can you imagine what it is like to burn to death? When that seems the better option than to live through whatever it is that awaits you?

Ban this, ban that. All for political mileage. These politicians are adept at using issues for their benefit. He gets his 15 mins of fame.
