The ba****ds of bollywood trailer
The leading lady of the film 'Simran', Kangana Ranaut, has been making headlines lately with her bold views and shocking revelations. Not surprising then that everybody is minutely scrutinizing the film that released this weekend.
This could well be a make or break movie for Kangana.
Expectations are high as her 2014 solo film 'Queen' took her career to new heights and her fans have similar expectations from this film. Does she manage to lead the film single-handedly? Let's find out.
'Simran' is a movie about a 30-year-old divorcee Praful Patel, based in Atlanta and leading the ordinary life by working in the house-keeping department of a hotel. She harbours a dream of buying her own house and is saving up for 7 years to make it happen. PRAFUL IS A GIRL'S NAME??
Just then, a bachelorette party takes her to the sin city Las Vegas and she ends up being addicted to gambling, and also gets robbed. Based on a true story, the movie is situational and engages you as you wonder what will happen with Praful.
Yes, the bank robbery scenes that Kangana embarks on with great ease look frivolous but you continue to invest in her. Much like 'Queen', the audience is soaked in the film and feels the emotions the character is going through - be it the small happiness of her making $2000 in the first gamble of her life, the frustration of her life not shaping the way she wants, or the anger of her losing all the money after she is robbed.
She also has an endearing set of parents with their middle-class worries. Enter a love interest, played by Soham Shah, who manages to make a place for himself in the film, otherwise dominated by Kangana.
Hansal Mehta, known for his critically acclaimed films like 'Shahid' and 'Citylights' handles the subject with care and doesn't glorify the character. Although we know that the character she portrays is flawed and isn't heroic, you can't help but be her cheerleader.
Overall, 'Simran' is an honest film made with a true heart and totally recommended to watch this weekend. The last scene will leave a smile on your face as you leave the theatres.
Film: Simran
Directed by: Hansal Mehta
Starring: Kangana Ranaut and Soham Shah
Ratings: 3/5
Hansal Mehta's Simran is all set for a theatrical release this Friday and it stars Kangana Ranaut. Ever since the trailer and teasers came out, there has been immense curiosity for the film. Ranaut plays the character of a Gujarati NRI in Simran and it is the simplicity of the character that is making the fans eagerly wait for the film that releases tomorrow. In the trailer, Kangana is a free-spirited person who doesn't believe in any sort of chains of the society and is seen asking for liberation from the set norms of the society. It will be interesting to see how Kangana will pull off this character of Simran on screen.
There's no denying that Kangana is a talented actor and has given us hit films like Tanu Weds Manu 2, Queen and Tanu Weds Manu. Tomorrow, finally Simran will be out for all the fans to see how Ranaut has performed in the film. Kangana has been in headlines for all the controversies - Will that help create a buzz for the film at the box office? It will be something to watch out for. But, we have got a chance to watch the film before its release.
The Pinkvilla film critic is currently watching Kangana Ranaut's Simran and here's the quick review of the film:
Even with a flawed personality, Kangana's Ranaut plays the reckless Praful Patel with immense conviction. From the first scene onwards, you are drawn to her - she is relatable, adorable and is immensely likeable. No matter what goes against her in life, she makes up for it in her optimism. The film's first half stretches between easy-breezy and soulful, all in the same vein. The actress is a delight to watch as she tracks the highs and lows of Praful Patel, an ordinary girl with simple dreams sucked into the world of crime. A trip to Las Vegas and a game of gamble turns her into an addict. Money lenders trick her and the girl falls into the murky trap easily. With no family support to help her monetarily, she turns to theft. In all of this, Kangana shines. Till intermission, you are compelled to watch her bitter-sweet story and her misadventures with a keen interest. But the drama has the risk of losing steam if Hansal doesn't keep the narrative as tight in the second half. There are multiple facets to explore - Praful's romance with a desi suitor, her tumultuous equation with her father and mostly the suspense of how she handles the money lenders. Will the grey heroine steal our hearts away?
This is the first impression of the film. Stay tuned for the full movie review.

With #Simran #KanganaRanaut again proves that why she is best talent in the country. You cannot take your eyes off from her in the film
Simran. Liked it. Wanted to love it. A layered character study of a woman seeking escape from the monotony of everyday life. Charming film.
Pinkvilla: "Kangana is a delight to watch as she tracks the highs and lows of Praful Patel. She plays her with immense conviction." #Simran
The National Award winner does a great job as a self-destructive rebel, but the storyline is flawed
Simran is the tale of a 30-year-old Gujarati woman, a divorcee who lives with her conservative parents in the state of Georgia, going rogue.
But Ranaut tries to inject a Bridget Jones appeal (Hollywood romcom's always-relatable Londoner) into her misadventures. The problem is that dating a wrong guy or not able to shed off those extra kilos aren't as grave a problem as looting a bank to settle debts gathered after a stupid night of gambling.
But credit has to be given to Ranaut for injecting verve into a character whose rebellion seems displaced.
Her antics even if ridiculous make you smile because Ranaut is a skilled actor. The scene in which she tries to flirt with an American is pure gold.
Director Hansal Mehta also does a splendid job of painting a realistic milieu of the Indian immigrant diaspora. They aren't coated with money and aren't always jolly, as a slew of Bollywood movies have led us to believe. Their middle-class existence and the war between traditionalist parents who are eager to see their divorced child remarry so that they aren't burdened by a divorcee in their household is beautifully brought out in this film. The clash between Patel and her strict, bullish father is heart-wrenching. But the movie doesn't, unfortunately, dwell on it. There's a lot going on in this film comedy, drama, social commentary and xenophobia in the US- and it can get messy.
The introduction of Soham Shah as the eligible suitor with a strong moral compass complicates it further. But Shah and the supporting actors do their bit in allowing Patel to shine. It's Ranaut's show all the way. But the movie suffers from over-crowding of genres. There's humour, there's tragedy, there's violence and there's drama, but it may not always come together as a whole. The songs that are inserted to highlight Patel's plight are overdone.
Just like its grey heroine, the film is studded with hits and misses.
Reserve this for a one-time watch as it's incredible to see Ranaut play a self-destructive rebel. But if you are looking for a cohesive cinematic piece, then you are looking at the wrong film.
Film: Simran
Director: Hansal Mehta

Running time: 145 minutes
Rating: PG15

After Rangoon, we get to see Kangana Ranaut in hopefully another performance oriented movie in Simran. The slice of life drama, set nearly entirely in the US, is said to be based on a real-life incident and is directed by Hansal Mehta, who previously made award-winning movies like Shahid and Aligarh. Kangana Ranaut plays the titular character, a happy-go-lucky divorcee who has kleptomaniac tendencies. The trailer was loved by all, and the songs had that winsome quality in them.
Simran is scheduled to release this Friday, however, since movies release in Gulf a day earlier, we get to have early reviews. So here we have the first review of Simran. Gulfnews.com had posted one of the early reviews and it is all praises for the movie's lead actress. Here's what the review has to say about Kangana Ranaut's performance "She makes robbing banks look like child's play and is reckless at a casino, but Kangana Ranaut manages to inject a degree of adorability in Praful Patel, the flawed protagonist in her latest film, Simran. Credit has to be given to Ranaut for injecting verve into a character whose rebellion seems displaced. Her antics even if ridiculous make you smile because Ranaut is a skilled actor. The scene in which she tries to flirt with an American is pure gold.
The review also praised Hansal Mehta's direction, as it says, "Director Hansal Mehta also does a splendid job of painting a realistic milieu of the Indian immigrant diaspora.
However the movie has its flaws, and a lot of them it seems. The review elaborates on this, "There's a lot going on in this film comedy, drama, social commentary and xenophobia in the US- and it can get messy. But the movie suffers from over-crowding of genres. There's humour, there's tragedy, there's violence and there's drama, but it may not always come together as a whole. The songs that are inserted to highlight Patel's plight are overdone.
In the end, the review calls it a one-time watch just to experience Kangana Ranaut's incredible performance. You can read the whole review here.
Don't forget to watch this space for BollywoodLife's review of the movie that will come out on September 15.
